Gran Turismo 5 "this fall" - Sony Europe

Timing TBD, but "before Christmas".

A Sony Computer Entertainment Europe executive has said that he expects Gran Turismo 5 to come out "this fall, before Christmas", while confessing the release date is "not yet decided".

The comments come from James Armstrong, boss of SCEE's Portuguese arm, in an interview with Spanish site Canarias Al Dia. They were spotted by GT Planet.

It was Armstrong who originally suggested that GT5 would be out in late 2009, a position held by Sony right up until a March 2010 Japanese release date was announced at last year's Tokyo Game Show. A summer Western release was mooted before the Japanese launch was delayed.

A new release date has yet to be given for the PS3's motorsport opus, so it's disappointing but hardly surprising to see Gran Turismo 5 heading towards the end of the year.

GT5 has now been in development for five years at a cost, according to creator Kazunori Yamauchi, of of some $60 million.

*Snooze* Wake me up when this arrives. Actually, maybe don't worry about it. They were never particularly exciting anyway and I'm not sure if there's still a gap in the market.

Trying to compete with Duke Nukem Forever?
  • BabyJesus #3 2 years ago

To be fair GT5 doesn't need a gap in the market.

It's bloody GT5, people will buy it(&PS3s) on name alone.

The release date shit is pretty annoying but Joe Average gamer on the street doesn't know or care about it, they will eat it up when it gets released.
  • woodnotes #4 2 years ago

At this rate GT6 will be out before GT5.

It's going to be up against Forza 4 at this rate...

    That's a bit ambitious. Forza 6 maybe.

My bet is on GT5, DNF and Shenmue 3 spearheading the PS4 launch campaign.

  • menage #9 2 years ago

I sure hope it's not just a decent racing game. After all this crap it better be spectacular.

Don't have high hopes though. What can you do with a driving game in these days without crumbling skyscrapers.
  • Senate #10 2 years ago

Not surprised the GT series is so sterile. Theres no fun in it because the developers are so stressed making it. Will sell very well all the same im sure.

They've delayed it because they are (re)developing it for 3D.

Sony Liverpool's mistake seemed to be getting (good) games out in a reasonable time. I hope those affected find new jobs soon and Sony should be looking a lot closer to home to see who's seemingly not pulling their weight maybe?
  • Andee #16 2 years ago

EG up early. Rather disappointed if this isn't out 'till the end of the year though.

And dh, the cost looks like it should easily be covered going by prologue sales.
  • Darren #17 2 years ago

    Quelle surprise!

I was excited about this game when I bought my PS3 almost three years ago but with each passing year my interest in it, as well as my patience, wanes. The time trial demo that was released before Christmas didn't inspire confidence either as it was pretty lacklustre and technically the game had hardly moved on since GT5 Prologue (eurgh yuck... tearing in a racing game with ONE car on the screen!?!?!).

I know Polyphony Digital are perfectionists but I can't help but feel that the anticipation for this game is going to be so great by the time it is released that it'll wind up being a huge disappointment.
  • mazk #18 2 years ago

Disappointing. Polyphony have really dropped the ball during the PS3 age. In fact all of Sony's second party studios in Japan have been delaying stuff for ages. Shadow of the Collosuss came out 5 years ago, and apart from the £20 GT demo "Prologue", GT 4 came out 5 years ago too. Alls we've had off them are some ok psp games, LocoRoco, Patapon and GTpsp. What happened at Sony Japan did everyone go mental 5 years ago? The PS3 itself has only just recently been getting on its feet after a terrible terrible launch. Does eurogamer have any opinions on Sony Japans mistakes?

Also, speaking of the total rip off GT: Prologue (yes i bought it and loved it), sure that offset some of the €60 million development costs of GT5?
  • freakzilla #19 2 years ago

This is now totally indefensible (if true). Is there no one in Sony being held accountable for their actions? (would bloody explain a lot).
  • Beano #20 2 years ago

I think the best thing Sony could do now is to fire Yamauchi (or demote him) from Polyphony and get someone else to manage the development of GT5. It's very clear by now that Yamauchi do not want to finish the game or is simply unable to let go of it.
Yamauchi is destroying the Gran Turismo franchise.
  • Nylz #21 2 years ago

  • Postumo #22 2 years ago

This is ridiculous... well it was already ridiculous last year.

By the time it gets released there will be a lot of better racing games. They keep delaying GT5 and everytime we get new material of the game, it looks worse.

I'm sure, by the time GT5 hits the shops, it will look dated.
  • Doctor_What #23 2 years ago

It's good to see that Alan Wake might beat something to the shelves :D
  • TopKatt #24 2 years ago

Oh well, I've just ordered Midnight Club:LA for £15. That'll keep me going until GT5 is finally released in the year 2525, if man is still alive, etc, etc.
  • Stifler #25 2 years ago

    I feel....ennui

I feel like not buying this as a mark of protest but know that my inner car geek will make me buy it. I just wished they'd stop all the media for the game until they have a set in stone release date that they know they wont break.

Give us a rest and stop spouting estimates or target dates. Shut your doors, work on it, decide on a ship date and stick to it. Then tell us.

    Thanks.
  • Flying_Pig #26 2 years ago

Oh well, more time to play the games I already have.

It'd better be worth the bloody wait, though!
  • Antaios #27 2 years ago

If I was Yamauchi, or really anyone working at Polyphony and on this game I would not be able to look at myself in the mirror anymore. This is absolutely ludicrous and every time I think they've reached the limit of absurdness they stretch things again with these type of announcements. The game was "basically finished" last October, what the hell are they doing over there?
  • monkie_king #28 2 years ago

    Summer 2011 confirmed!
  • Kengro #29 2 years ago

As we already didn't know... I still have a hard time beliving them, my guess is 2011
  • Arwin #30 2 years ago

I can only say ... f you! You should have created an expandable, modular system with a good base set of cars and tracks that you were sure you'd be able to deliver on time, and leave the rest to DLC or upgrade BD-ROMS or whatever. It should never take this long, and if you did know it would take this long, you should have opened up GT5 Prologue more for DLC, better online, more tracks and cars, etc.
  • chub #31 2 years ago

    @Antaios

Perhaps the game was "basically finished" last October, but maybe then they had a go at Forza 3 and realised they still had a lot more work to do.

@Anthony_Daniels : In which area do you expect GT5 to be better than F3?

Sure the graphics may be better (although I have my doubts) but gameplaywise, F3 is hard to match!
    Edited by 1 at 02/02/10 @ 10:36
  • Beano #36 2 years ago

@Anthony_Daniels : The rewind feature is silly - that I do agree on - but the handling and weight is just fine and you can make it as realistic and challenging as you want. Damage model in F3 is downtoned and simple but I also doubt that GT5 will do that any better.

Lol at this rate we already got 3 forza games and only 1 gt game before you know forza 4 has 800 cars and then the 1000 cars gt has will look a little less more impressive.

    @ beano

Wasnt there a damage video released last week. That showed that damage on production cars are lackluster.
And that gt will come out with 2 version of damage one for race cars and one for productioncars wich are lackluster.

Even though we all know that this game will be the proverbial canine testis I can't help but think that with all these delays there's a very real risk of a Half Life 2 like moment when you realise that the end product doesn't quite live up to the hype and isn't reflective of all the supposed extra work that the delays would have afforded them.
  • M_of_the_sys #55 2 years ago

To say I have decided I am not buying a PS3 until they are £100, will this be out in time?
  • secombe #57 2 years ago

It's quite ironic that many still feel the need to compare this to Forza 3...a game that would have been out for well over a year by the time we see GT5.

Even as a massive Forza 3 fan, I hope that GT5 blows it to pieces...as far as I can tell there isn't a single justifiable reason why it shouldn't be at least 10 times better. If it doesn't force me to finally buy a PS3, it's failed.
  • LetsGo #58 2 years ago

I don't care how long it takes, it takes years to make the most realistic driving game ever.

I don't care how long it takes, it takes years to make the most realistic driving game ever.

RacePro nailed the physics/handling model better than any console game released so far...yet nobody bought it. It's still - in my opinion - without equal for hotlapping. If small dedicated developers can do physics (and AI, just) to that level, GT5 better be the greatest gaming experience of all time.

I think they probably saw what was missing (advanced collision and a good damage system) and decided that it needed these things to be the best game of this generation.

Now I would agree with other people if Sony only had a few games out this year, and they were all Xmas loaded, but as they have 2? exclusives coming out in two months as well as there being LOTS of games coming out early in the year, perhaps rightly so (and i know some people will be upset by it) that they can do alittle more dev/polish and release it towards the end of the year. Rather than release a game that people will be upset about...I can see method in the madness even if its been going on forever.
  • M_of_the_sys #62 2 years ago

How would it even be possible to make a racing game ten times better? I think this genre has its limits. Forza is not perfect and I don't expect GT5 to be perfect. The question for me is not, if it is a 'real car' like someone said, but if the game is fun to play. Forza is fun to play and I hope GT5 will be too (the older parts were too sterile for me). RacePro did the best and perhaps most realistic handling to date, but the game was pretty boring for me.
  • jefranklin18 #64 2 years ago

I am disappointed that GT5 has taken so long, and to be honest I do not believe that it will be out in autumn this year as the developer's track record is pretty poor (how long did GT PSP take from the original announcement to actually coming out?). I have said it before: Sony have been well and truly shafted by PD and they need to look at the contract - I would refrain from terminating it, as they can produce some quality (eventually) but there is some merit in PD not getting a penny until the $60million (or a reasonable proportion of it) has been recouped.

Any ideas for a decent car-porn game that I can get as a substitute? I don't have an Xbox, so Forza is out of the question.

if you're under the assumption that GT is any more "realistic" than Forza, think again. or get a driving license.

i have nissan 350Z; in real life, i can drive it down the road at 50 miles an hour and turn the steering wheel - car turns. do the same in gran turismo, and the car will start sliding around like you're doing 150.

I swear every member of Polyphony Digital has OCD, in fact it has to be a requirement! If you don't have grey or thinning hair you're seen as an OUTSIDER!

I'm still going to happily pick up the game when we're living life like the fucking Jetsons, but now I just feel sorry for Yamaguchi even with all of his money and flash motors.

"there's a very real risk of a Half Life 2 like moment when you realise that the end product doesn't quite live up to the hype and isn't reflective of all the supposed extra work that the delays would have afforded them."

If it's as good as HL2 it'd be a must buy for me. Might not have lived up to the hype but that's more of a problem for people that believe in hype than skeptics like me... ;)

Still the best FPS out there as far as I'm concerned.

  • DocktorJ #75 2 years ago

Why are Polyphony trying so hard? Even if they've been rattled after playing F3 (which seems likely based on the quality of Prologue and the GT5 demo) GT5 will still shift mega-units, and GT5 will still be disappointing to us. After all, even if it is better than F3, it won't be 5-years-worth better. The only other option is to leave it a few years and get developing an amazing next-gen game READY FOR LAUNCH DAY!

And GT5 is getting ridiculous. Blizzard at least never -announces- when a game will be out until they are a hundred percent certain it's nice and slick. GT5? It'll be done when they finish burning money in a pit and -then- realize it'll need to sell millions of copies to recoup the losses. 60 mil dev costs, in a niche genre, on the least-well selling platform. This is looking, uh, dicey.

Given the above, is it also not possible that we might like reading and commenting on news about videogames?

The delays on GT5 are funny/interesting/strange and that's why people are commenting.

It sounds like you're the one that's insecure about their chosen piece of plastic given your last 4 comments.

As for people negging any praise of GT5, looking back over the last few pages it seems to me that it's because they usually add a "forza suxs" or a "polyphony are TEH greatest" type ending.

By all means search through my posting history, I think you'll find a few really good recent rants about MS in there. Weirdo.

    Back on topic.

If Forza keeps releasing DLC like they are then Polyphony have another issue on their hands when they finally release GT5 - namely the Forza 3 Ultimate Edition. I'm not saying it will affect sales but it will tempur the release hype....and give fans something else to argue about. ;)

I'm certainly not insecure about my console choices. I'm perfectly happy with my ps3 and Wii and thus i feel no need to enter threads about 360 exclusives and post negative comments

    Yes, i'm weird that way

I though Forza 3 bombed so GT5 will win no matter what they release - assuming they release it.

Anyway I'm guessing that the delay has to do with multiplayer. Would be stupid to delay it for just for polish and tweaks so they must have screwed up something important. Guess we'll never know though.

"I'm perfectly happy with my ps3 and Wii and thus i feel no need to enter threads about 360 exclusives and post negative comments"

No, you prefer to enter threads using words such as 'butthurt' & 'xbots', posting screencaps of other posters profiles (?) and using 4chan memes.

    There's a reason you've got a -12 and it's not because of the 'xbots'. It's because you're an idiot.

  • jn2002dk #107 2 years ago

Oh noes, i got a -12, what ever will i do

I'm not the one entering threads to thrash a game, claiming it's out of general gaming interest.

I'm pretty sure that makes you the idiot

Also, you still haven't answered my question

Why are you in ps3 threads posting negative comments?

    "There's a reason you've got a -12 and it's not because of the 'xbots'. It's because you're an idiot."

That's definitely because of the fanboys. Mature, intelligent people don't use the silly voting system. Proven by the fact that the highest ranking posts in general contain remarkable insights as "well done EG for giving a game that I've never played but hoped would be good, a great score". Combined with the lowest ranking posts being almost invariably the most interesting.

Seriously, what was EG thinking when they implemented it?! It had proven to be useless on crap sites like n4g.com.

    Have you heard yourself?

"Why are you in ps3 threads posting negative comments?"

Boo hoo. Sounds like you're gonna cry. Deary me.

"Also, you still haven't answered my question"

Yes I did. You just won't accept it. That's not the same thing.

"That's definitely because of the fanboys. Mature, intelligent people don't use the silly voting system."

Sorry Les, I don't agree. It doesn't take a fanboy to realise that "So many butthurt xbots in here once again" and "Forza is a poor mans Gran Turismo, fact" should get a little click of the minus button. Just because you're too mature to use them doesn't mean that others don't vote for what they consider sensible comments. Maybe they do get hidden amongst the fanboyism but that doesn't mean that mature people don't use them.

EDIT: I don't think I actually made any negative comments 'thrashing the game' as accused. Care to show me?
