Gran Turismo 5 next July

In Japan. Euro plans scarce.

Sony Europe has kept its lips sealed over the release date of Gran Turismo 5 in Europe, following news that the racing game is expected in Japan next July.

The target date was let slip by game creator Kazunori Yamauchi, who told Japanese magazine Famitsu he hoped to have it ready by next summer. Given that previous instalments have taken around three to four months longer to appear in Europe, it might not show up here until 2009.

But at least we'll have the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue demo to sink our teeth into sometime this year, although when exactly is still undecided - Japan will have it in October.

It will be a similar affair to the Gran Turismo HD Concept taster we were treated to in March, which let us try out the engine under the hood of the new instalment and race a spattering of cars around a single track. We expect it will also be free to download, too, when the time comes.

Unfortunately concrete details on what will be in it are scarce, but online play has been mentioned.

We'll let you know when so much as a tire squeals.

  • CitizenGeek #3 5 years ago

    That's still aaaaaages away :(
  • SteveB #4 5 years ago

I wouldn't be suprised if this slips too as all the others have if I remember rightly.

    2009?
PS3 owners have to wait until 2009 until they get their hands on a racer that competes with the likes of Forza and Project Gotham?!
You can already get Project Gotham Racing 3 and Forza Motorsport 2 and Colin McRae DIRT on Xbox 360. The only thing that the PS3 has that the 360 doesn't is Motorstorm, but that isn't as good as Forza or PGR!

AND Xbox 360 owners also have PGR4 coming this Christmas!

If I had a PS3 right now it would be put straight on ebay!

  • Steroyd #6 5 years ago

Because we all bought the console for the racing games.

"Given that previous instalments have taken around three to four months longer to appear in Europe, it might not show up here until 2009."

So July + 4 months make it a 2009 release according to Eurogamer?

I would say a "late 2008" according to my calendar. I seriously doubt that it will be out in 2009 if the jap version is out in mid-2008!
  • Corben_Dallas #8 5 years ago

This better be out in EUROPE PAL by end of 2008 (FFS THATS A YEAR AND A HALF AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!) get yer collective fingers out Polyphony!.

+This had better be the best online racer ever made.
  • Rodney #9 5 years ago

Im a bit of a 360 fan. But I think the PSN netowrk is offering a better deal for game previews/demos. There is not really an xbox equivlant of GT HD/prologue.

I like the idea of cheap old PS games like tekken in HD as well

I will be buying a PS3 when GT5 game comes out.
  • kingkatt #10 5 years ago

Have you heard that Prologue will be free? I very much doubt it. It was presented as much more than a demo and Sony have to cover their bandwidth costs somehow.
  • Talha #11 5 years ago

Hey, let me save the breath - er, keystrokes - of about 150 forum posters that have pounced on this story:

    1) PS3 suxxxxoooorrrrrrs
    2) GT5 will be SHITE anyway so why wait?
    3) PGR rules - Forza rules - who needs GT5 anyway?
    4) GT blows - go play GTR if you want a REAL sim on the REAL gaming platform!
    5) GT games have no AI - while the AI on Forza almost went sentient before the devs had to pull the plug

Please tick as applicable and paste :-)

NOTE: I own both an XBox 360 and a PS2. These days Forza, PGR3, and DiRT have me practically GLUED to my 360 and Bioshock won't help matters at all.

All I did was to forecast the sort of comments this thread will attract. I hope I am wrong.

PROLOGUE out the month after next :)

    That'll do, pig.

Anyone who thinks the first ever online MP turismo release will be a freebie needs a small lesson in supply/demand. It won't be free. And that's a good thing...it means it will be a short game rather than a demo. And even a 'short' turismo is probably going to be a substantial experience. I bought my PS3 now because prologue is only a few months away for JPN release...and since they're not region locked... Bring. It. On.

  • Arnold__ #16 5 years ago

Still waiting for Gran Turismo Mobile.
  • menage #17 5 years ago

Christmas 2008 here. Well, hopefully something else will come along otherwise thye won't have anything to go up against PGR 4 or even Forza 3
  • Decap #18 5 years ago

So might hit the shelves in europe in summer 2009.

Happy waiting (and still just a poor-version of Forza2) ;)
  • Gouki #19 5 years ago

Hmmmm I see the kids are off with all their SH*T Spouting!

I still play GT4 on the PS3 and whilst agreed the PS Shop demo was bab Gran Turismos feels so much better than Forza. I love driving games from ridge racer to Mario Kart, From Gotham to Forza and having played Forza 2 for quite some time now I still go bak to Gran Turismo 4 & 3. ( i kno i should be playing PS3 games i'll take that one on the chin!!) Dirt Finally here in two weeks and sega rally two weeks after that pheeeew.

Lets hope no delays and look forward to 08 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How can you say a poor version of Forza when the games not even out or have you played it when you were round at your mates house playing on his PS4 cos iz dad workz az a tezter. Thick TW*T!!!!!!
  • neil_likes_bums #20 5 years ago

Horrah, and thus it's business as usual, no danger of it being different this generation then. Oh well at least Gran Turismo PSP will keep me occupied in the mean time.
  • Goffee #21 5 years ago

And the PSP version that they promised when they launched the flippin' console???????????

    Talk about Failure to launch
  • Sebo #22 5 years ago

Yeah, where the hell is Gran Turismo PSP? That was unveiled like three years ago!!!!!
  • bengray66 #23 5 years ago

Everyone was moaning that the PS3 came out to late.... But by the way all the games are getting delayed i think it came out to early!
  • manic_mouse #24 5 years ago

No, GT3 was not a PS2 launch title.
  • JYM60 #25 5 years ago

    Ages away :(

Still GT5P is like a full game to me. Full online for 12 or so people. It's nothing like GTHD.
  • BadBoyBonner #26 5 years ago

    Being purely objective.

I fail to see, what the GT-HD demo offers over and above the countless game demo’s on Live i.e. PGR3, Forza, Moto GP2007.

The only reason I can think of for the reverence is that PS3 owners dance with glee by being offered a pitiful crumb that Polyphony managed to actual get out; and who wants to only have a nibble of the most gorgeous stake you have ever tasted, their [Polyphony] action are almost too cruel to be true ;-)

Again something only the Playstation brand could get away with without loosing face.

If 360 owners were waxing lyrical about a PGR3 demo, but the game was delayed for months and months after the consoles launch, whilst simultaneously lauding it as a reason to own a 360, I think they’d have been laughed out of the ball park.

I think the Turismo games are technically brilliant, and show a mastery of the Sony consoles that nobody else ever seems to touch.

If managing that then becomes the companies remit, they either need to hire more staff, create a smaller game, or lower their internal technical bar; some or all of the above would result in a much rosier picture of PS3 owners driving line-up.

Having bought a PS2 just for GT3, flogged it, then again for GT4 – I’ll probably buy a PS3 just for this.

But happy playing the old 360 till then. In fact, the 360’s 3 year warranty should be just coming to an end as GT5 comes out. Perfect timing.
  • Madlax #27 5 years ago

    @BadBoyBonner

    "Being purely objective. "

with all due respect anyone claiming to be [Purely objective] is just fooling himself and others ,greatest apologies for saying this hard truth

no one can give an objective view point, every is biased in one way or another, trying to convince people otherwise is ridiculous

i see that there are more and more paid comments in eurogamer with each passing day, quiet unfortunate

i apologize again for the sudden yet neccesary rant,i just hate those who claim to be pure and unbiased

    no hard feelings now ;)

  • penguin_overlord #28 5 years ago

This will sell hundreds of thousands of PS3's in Japan. What with this, MGS4, Killzone, FFXIII and LittleBigPlanet, there's no doubt that next year is shaping up to a big year for the PS3.

It's true that the 360 will have its moment to shine this Christmas with Bioshock, Mass Effect and Halo 3 but next year is shaping up to be the PS3's year.
  • BadBoyBonner #29 5 years ago

    Dear Madlax

No hard feelings and here are a few tips.

Start every new sentence [not following a semicolon ] with a capital letter.

Use one space after a comma and two after a full stop.

It is my submission that your trying to put forward a semantically minded philosophical argument against any one individual containing the ability to be purely objective.

While an argument with some merit, it would have to be accepted within the context it was framed.

If your argument is taken to it’s logical conclusion, then no-one individual could ever state if another point of view is purely objective or not.

So neither opinion could ever be correctly assumed i.e. you can not tell me I am not being purely objective, as you can not be purely objective in your analysis of my objectivity.

While it maybe logically flawed in the strictest sense, it has a patently obvious colloquial intent. A balanced view.

Moving to your “I see that there are more and more paid comments in Eurogamer with each passing day, quiet unfortunate”. [Obviously with grammar and punctuation corrected - could not resist to leave the spelling mistake in though].

What on earth are you on about? While I would love someone to pay for my BVC, by me merely passing the odd comment on a games website while I work away, I fear that it will never happen.

Now if you know somewhere that I could apply for such a position, please feel free to let me know.

Seems to me like PS3 owners are having to wait as long for GT5 as 360 users had to wait for F2. Bid deal.
  • bengray66 #31 5 years ago

    Bid deal???

    Don't you mean "Big deal" ? ?

And i imagine that it is considering that there does not seem to be another decent game coming out soon for you lot! (looks away from MGS4 which will end up on the 360 soon when they realise that not a lot of people have PS3's and they want there money back)

Oooh cold. Im not a 360 owner anyway, but i do like to poke the fire.

    PINGUIN_OVERLORD:
Killzone 2 playable demo looked very liner and the A.I sucked, graphics looked good but not the standard as Gears Of War. Also Killzone 1 sucked BIGTIME!...Next year for 360:

Lost Oddysee & Cry-On (Both 360 exclusives RPGs by ex Final Fantasy developer) Fable 2
    Dead Or Alive 5
2 new exclusives by Tecmo (1 rumored to be Ninja Gaiden 2)
    Project Gotham racing 4
    Splinter Cell Convection (360 exclusive)
    Halo Wars (RTS)
    Too Human
    Left 4 Dead

All above are some of the high profile games coming next year, so I'm sure PS3 will have another tough(er) time to compete with 360. Also there's MS follow ups to Gears Of War & Crackdown...Rare also to produce the follow up to Kameo, and the new Banjoo & Kaziooe game, and rumors of Killer Instinct to be developed for 360.

The point is PS3 has failed to show it's potential to what Sony hyped it up to be. Motor Strom is a showcase (and good game), but it's nothing the 360 can't handle. With Forza 2, PGR3 & 4(Looking awesome), Moto GP, Dirt, Sega Rally, Burnout and not forgetting the fun and quality looking Flatout (great fun arcade smash em racer); GT the PS3 game does not seem as exciting (Though the A.I in GT always sucked as the game never really challenged, esp when you got a good car).

  • penguin_overlord #33 5 years ago

    TRUTH
Killzone 2 still has another year of development so it's unfair to criticise it just yet. It is true that the first game was not very good but Killzone on the PSP is a great game.

Out of the games you mention the only one that remotely interests me is Halo Wars and that ain't gonna sell any 360s. The 360 has a very strong Christmas line-up this year but it's looking far weaker next year as it has nothing like Halo 3 to prop it up. The games you mention will sell well to existing 360 owners but won't entice the unconverted. Let's be honest here, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy and Gran Turismo are bigger titles than any you've listed.
  • JYM60 #34 5 years ago

Little tip. Ignore TRUTH, he's a stupid twat. The way he gets on it's like he's some sort of games master.

You've played KZ2 TRUTH I suppose? I don't know what you think you are doing, but coming into a thread about GT and stating Xbox 360s 08 lineup makes you look like a total fuck-wit

    Kindly get Fucked!

"PS3 owners have to wait until 2009 until they get their hands on a racer that competes with the likes of Forza and Project Gotham?!"

It's possibly just me being rather peculiar, but I've found I've put more time into the GT HD demo than I have Forza 2. Not sure what it is, but there's something just lacking in the handling on all but one car I have on Forza 2 (one of the special edition NSXs is rather fun). It's almost like you're not in contact with the road. Like I said, probably just me being weird.
  • RazorObsession #36 5 years ago

  • Vandrius #37 5 years ago

    ciaran036: die.

    That is all.
  • Virvel #38 5 years ago

What is the point discussing and trying to sell 360 in here?

The 360 is a dying console in Europe and already dead in Japan. Why invest in a a short lived console in the middle of its lifecycle? I would rather stick with the PS3 which will have a longer life just like the PS1 & PS2.
  • Redeye #39 5 years ago

    Fanboys. Tsch.

And GT PSP in 'not vapourware' shocker! About bloody time! ;)
  • Pac #40 5 years ago

    Dear Sony,

I really want to buy a PS3 as I am fed up with using wired pads when playing Okami, FF XII and GT4. So please release some games that I want to play so that I can justify spending £400 on the world's most expensive gaming console.

PS: Xbox 360 conversions don't count - I bought one of those over a year ago.
  • BootLace #41 5 years ago

    "or you being a fanboy"

Well, I own pretty much every main console since the late 70s and have countless home computers and PCs. If I'm a fanboy (although technically a fanman), it's that I'm a fan of games, not any bespoke platform.

There again, I guess it's easier to belittle an opinion with a colloquial label than it is to accept that someone may take a subjective stance that differs from yours.
  • TRUTH #42 5 years ago

JYM60:...always starts to cry when say something about the PS3 (I got one too!), sorry if you can't take it but remember I can go on either PS3 or 360 threads as I do have both.

Virvel:...I think you mean the PS3 is not selling in Europe, and fact is the sales for PS3 have slowed in Europe. Even in Japan they are under selling BIGTIME from Sony's target!...Japanese companies need games sales and due to mega expensive cost to develop for nex-gen consoles esp the PS3, and with the 10m+ and continue steady sales of 360 in Europe/USA, this is part of the reason many big games from Japan like Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, Virtua Fighter 5 and other titles are now coming to 360, inc Japanese exclusives for 360...Also they have been more hints and rumors that MGS4 will be coming to 360, just as Unreal and Haze were to be solid PS3 exclusives are now coming 360.

  • JYM60 #43 5 years ago

Oh wise up. I'm not complaining about you saying something about the ps3, i've complained many times myself about the current problems. I'm complaining about your pointless 360 advertising in every thread.

    """
    Next year for 360:

    """

Whats the point in this. The thread has nothing to do about 360's 08 lineup. I'm not that much a fanboy, though I admit I am a bit. I'm just really bored of your drivel. Well it makes me laugh, at least that's something.
