Gran Turismo 5 demo dated

Arrives with GT Academy in December.

Sony's announced that the GT Academy competition will begin this year on 17th December.

That may be unremarkable, but on the same day a special demo of Gran Turismo 5 will be released.

That sampler of Polyphony's game offers up a Time Trial platform to qualify for the Academy. Race a Nissan 370Z as fast as you can around a new GT5 circuit before 24th January 2010 to take part.

Head over to the European PlayStation blog for pictures and videos.

Gran Turismo 5 was once penned for release this year but is now expected in March 2010, although no specific date has been announced by Sony Europe.

There's loads of content stuffed into our Gran Turismo 5 gamepage below.

Let's just hope it won't be anything like the Motorstorm 2 fiasco.

It was when Sony released a good demo for Qore subscribers, and then some time later released to the public a horrible alpha version which looked even worse than Motorstorm 1. Needless to say, people were not amused. They ultimately put up the better version, but by then, people were already convinced that the graphics sucked.

Motorstorm 2 went up to be no success, and I wonder if the demo played a part in this.

Oh yes. One good excuse for not having a life in Dec and Jan.
  • Arwin #6 2 years ago

March being the projected Japanese release. We'll have to wait and see whether we will still get the game day and date with the Japanese. They managed that for GT PSP, but after not making December, I'm returning from a slight bit of hopefulness for the December release back to complete and utter skepticism of PD making their release dates.

Look very much forward to trying out a bit of new track though! And my Christmas holiday starts early too. :p

So this is a seperate demo, and not another track added to GT:prologue?

Sure hope it's from the final build of GT5. Can't wait.

    great, a demo

wait, what is gran turismo 5 prologue then? wasn't that released around 3 years ago
  • dsmx #11 2 years ago

Does it really matter? At least Polyphony realise that people would like something to tie them over till the game comes out. Personally I really do hope that when/if GT5 does come out it's a massive leap forward from GT4 it will of been 6 years since GT4 came out I'm expecting great things.
  • DrStrangelove #12 2 years ago

GT5 uses a completely new driving/physics model, and includes car damage. Prologue was basically an enhanced GT4.
  • MENTAL1ST Verified Senior Software Engineer, Picsel UK Ltd. #13 2 years ago

If that was the case, then surely it would have been GT4: Epilogue.
  • banjo21 #14 2 years ago

I thought I had the demo of the demo in 2007 gt something or other. Then the real demo in 2008 called prologue. And I paid for that one. If I pay for this one also that's 3 demos and £40 before I even buy the bloody game. No doubt I will though. Typical 4.5 years after 360 is rleased and two forzas later Sony gets round to a gt game.
  • Stegofreak #15 2 years ago

Never really been all that good at Time Trials but can't wait to get another go at a bit of Gran turismo action. Just wondering whether the new track is a "new" new track or just a new GT5 realisation of a classic track. Actually either would be cool.

Anyone else thinking that this has been delayed so much that it'll be a disappoinment when it finally comes out?
  • Widge #17 2 years ago

thank god someone mentioned forza before this got to the second page
  • Stegofreak #18 2 years ago

    @banjo21

    It's not a game...it's a Real-Driving-Simulator. ;-)

    ^^^^^^

    Broken record!!

Anyway I am sure Sony have given certain devs money in order to build a engine from scratch that can be used on future games in PS3 and other consoles in the future.

Doubt Sony want just 1 GT game this gen!!

Somewhere over the last few years the purpose of a demo has been completely lost.

I guess it was they started becoming "bonuses" for pre-ordering a game and available to gold subscribers only/early.
  • Malek86 #21 2 years ago

Comapnies now understand that some gamers will go to great lengths to have a demo. That's why you'll see things like MH2G packed with the MH3 demo (honestly, how many people will have bought it just for that?), the Motorstorm 2 demo available early to Qore subscribers, any 360 demo available a week earlier to Gold subscribers, the Phantasy Star Zero demo for 2$...

Basically, companies understand that now they can "sell" a demo and actually get away with it.

And I believe the fault lies for the great part on us - we shouldn't have been giving them reason to think so in the first place. I'm not guilty either - I remember my reason for ordering DQ8 from the USA was because of the FF12 demo (and it sucked too).

As a new PS3 owner I'm rather chuffed about this. Looking forward to the demo.
  • gjgjg #23 2 years ago

so i geuss it will come out in Mar with jp/us too then?
  • abcd #24 2 years ago

I hope it won't be one car and one track at a time. That would become annoying.
  • SAH1977 #25 2 years ago

The track is reportedly Spa or Indy.

Hopefully this demo is from the full GT5 build and includes features like head tracking.
  • DocktorJ #26 2 years ago

Sounds good! back to Forza 3 while I wait then..
  • Murton #27 2 years ago

Seriously looking forward to the new GT, I'm not a big racing game fan really but GT5 looks like an enjoyable game all round, plus it's a proper racing game, ie a racing sim and not an arcade racing game like every other racer on the market at the moment.

But for me the biggest selling point has to be the Top Gear Test Track, I can't wait to jump into various high powered super cars and try to best The Stig's times.
  • DrStrangelove #28 2 years ago

If that was the case, then surely it would have been GT4: Epilogue.

That would have been a poor decision, marketing-wise.
  • MARKIV #29 2 years ago

The way GT5 now actually looks and content going to be provided ( Nascar, WRC, nightime, weather effects & beautfiul tracks/locations ), I'm surprised they've not called it GT6.

One thing is for sure, it's going to p**s all over Forza 3, which I think should of been callled Forza 2.5!! :)
  • shotgun44 #30 2 years ago

The Top Gear track is gonna be in this!? My interest has peaked for this! I like the GT games anyway. I wonder if you can buy the subaru or whatever the car is that they use in the show. An option to flatten Clarkson's smug face would also be welcome. Do it.

Man oh man! That bit there made me Laugh Out REALLY Loud!!! Great comment.

From a content point of view, absolutely. That was never not going to be the case though, the GT series has always had an epic amount of content, statistically it blows everything else out of the water and always will.

The big but, in my view, is the actual driving experience. I've been playing Forza 3 recently and the handling model is inspired, everything from the 135bhp RS Twingo to the Peugeot 908 handle beautifully, just the right amount of looseness to make it hugely fun, particularly the hot hatches (which are as close to reality as I've experienced in a game, the 500 squirms and jigs all over the place when really on the limit) are actually as enjoyable as the prototypes, which is pretty rare in these sorts of games.

That's where I think GT needs to sharpen up and I hope they've done so, the small low powered cars have always felt dull in the GT series, particularly if you step back into one after hammering a supercar around a track for a few hours. Forza has that balance pretty much spot on and they've offered enough tight twisty tracks to really take advantage of that.

Fingers crossed anyhow, as you've said the content looks epic so I just hope working through it all is as fun as it could be.

welcome back Donnie. i didn't miss you.

Regarding the Top Gear track, has anyone else actually looked at its layout? I hadn't realised from watching it on TV that its a figure-eight - so we're not going to be racing other cars on it.
  • aphexstwin #35 2 years ago

i thought that the tg track will be tt only. if this is a gt academy tie-in it should really be on a real track, i know the last one wasnt. its a fantastic opportunity too for the armchair-recaro enthusiast, lars schlommer, the first winner is reportedly doing quite well.

and forza 2 is miles better than 3. in my opinion of course.
  • Murton #36 2 years ago

The Top Gear track is confirmed as time trial only and in my opinion it will be one of the best time trial tracks in the track if not the best. The reason for this is because of its unique layout with each and every feature of the track designed to test a different aspect of the car, Chicago, Hammerhead, the follow-through, the tire-wall, second-to-last and the infamous "Gambon" who doesn't want to test themselves against those?

The Top Gear Test Track will not only play host to some fierce online competition but also work well as a practice area for your new cars and in my case host my own "Star in the Reasonably Price Car" where I insist that everyone who visits my flat set a set vehicle, haven't decided which one yet, and just for added laughs I intend to get a Top Gear style magnetic board for putting the times up. Sad? Quite possibly, but I reckon it'll be a great laugh, "you have had a few beers, so I'll give you a D for Drunk, making you the second fastest drunk-driver I've had in the flat, well done".
