GOG snaps up Psychonauts for pittance

Grabs Advent Rising, BloodRayne too.

Good Old Games (GOG.com) has begun selling the brilliant Psychonauts for the paltry price of $9.99 (£6).

Designed by Tim Schafer (more recently of Brutal Legend fame), Psychonauts was crowned Eurogamer's Game of the Year 2005, despite not actually launching in Europe until early 2006. Shh.

It's so good we even wrote two reviews. So, yours is the choice of Tom's US import review (too many jokes) or Kristan's PAL review (too many music references).

Advent Rising (EG review) and BloodRayne (EG review) are less interesting, but new on GOG.com nonetheless.

It's on Gametap for free. I like free! Has been for a while too, though it does mean you have to launch it through their proprietry web plug-in thing. But it's an option, should you not have a Credit Card or £6.

Also, you do need to create an account, but you just subscribe to the Free pack. There used to be more (I joined for Just Cause & Op. Flashpoint, which are sadly no more).

Sorry, what use am I without a link! Psyhconauts free on Gametap

Steam have been selling this at £5.99 as well...

psychonauts is is only free through gametap to people who have subscribed to the service though? because its got mainly a large selection of back cat games, i don't know if there's many i would like to revisit but its definitely an interesting service.

Those are both alternatives, yes, but the best part about GOG is that you sign up and just download the game, as many times as you want, usually with extras like a strategy guide, wallpapers or soundtrack files. There's no running crappy third party programs just to get to the content.

Steam isn't a crappy program though and for the same price and it's just as easy to take from machine to machine. I love gog to bits but if Steam have it for the same price I know where I am getting it... saying that I bought this a year or 2 ago on steam anyway.

Whilst I thought psychonauts was ok, I just don't get the classic status it is afforded. Sorry...

I'm pretty sure Psychonauts is in GameTap's free catalog.

Also, if you haven't played this, you're missing out on a truly epic experience.

I'm pretty sure DFawkes said that first

If you just play it as platform 3d game, may feels like just a good one. You need to go with all the clever gags and reference as an extra layer of entertainment and that where the game shines.

    GoG! GoG! GoG! GoG!

    Yeah! Go GoG!

GoG always have cool little extras. Of course in the case of Psychonauts just artworks.

It's not bad, got it on Xbox live when it came out, played it a bit but just never got round to finishing it. The humour and setting were great, the gameplay itself wasn't anything special to me.

Edited to possibly make more sense. But probably not.

"such as it is wasn't" what?
  • neonemesis #12 2 years ago

Never played Psychonauts. I do have it somewhere in my mass of PS2 games so I need to get around to it soon.

Same goes for Bloodrayne which I doubt is any good at all but hey, at least you an obligatory slutty vampire to play as.

I bought this last week on GoD for £19.99, stupid I know, but a game like this means every penny was worth it.

I've owned this for a long time on my PC, but if they got their arse in gear and released it on PSN I'd buy it again. Definetly a couch+joypad game.

    &Kosomo.
It's mad peeps like you who encourage Microsoft and Sony to continue ripping us off
£20 for an old game /sigh

    Advent Rising isn't too bad.
Well okay, it has a ridiculous, flat story, boring characters and endless exposition that shouldn't have been told through cutscenes but experienced through gameplay. There was so much potential for some adventure-ing that it's dumbfounding that the developers prefered to drop a 10 minute cutscene on you.
But the gameplay was solid mostly, and the soundtrack very good.
Sadly, it was all too linear and when you got your superpowers the game was much too easy. And: the super powers offered some potential for puzzles that was never used. A shame.
I think in some ways it's a third person Halo. I found it to be much more entertaining though, despite its many flaws.

Edit: Oh, and it crashes, always unexpectedly. Grr...
