God of War PSP demo now available

There won't be a PS2 port, says RAD.

A demo of PSP title God of War: Chains of Olympus is now available for download from the PlayStation Store.

Beware though that the demo is only accessible to US PSN accounts, with European users told, "Sorry, you do not meet the eligibility requirements for this product."

Switch over to your US details though and it's fine - the 164MB download is all yours. Obviously we can't help you find out how to sign up for a US account though, and Google definitely can't help you.

The game is being released here on 28th March, and you can expect a full review to appear on Eurogamer later this week.

It's been developed by Ready At Dawn, previously responsible for PSP title Daxter. According to a post on RAD's website, Chains of Olympus will remain exclusive to the handheld - and will be the studio's last PSP offering.

"We can confirm that Chains of Olympus will be our last PSP game as we're moving on to other projects and other ideas on other consoles," the posting reads.

"We can also confirm that this will be our first and last God of War game as, just like Daxter before it, there will NOT be a PS2 port of the game. We like our games PSP exclusives."

It'll be interesting to see what RAD comes up with next - especially now that Dan Arey, former Naughty Dog and creative director on Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, is on board.

"We can confirm that Chains of Olympus will be our last PSP game as we're moving on to creating cheap shovelware for the Wii as we want some of that money too," the posting reads.

Funny, I could have sworn that I'd logged into Eurogamer, but this news has an overtly American bent, and a particularly misleading title, as it's nothing to do with a PAL demo, as one would assume from the headline on a supposedly European games news site.

Oh, and RAD are now developing for the X-Box 360.

    Umm.

The PSP is region free. All games are region free. As hinted above it is easy to circumnavigate Sony's tiresome attempts to stop you downloading the demo (although to be fair MS and Nintendo are just as bad in this regard).

So, if you are European and prepared to jump through some hoops you can play the demo. As such how is this news only related to NA?

See, because I saw the US demo over a WEEK AGO for download I thought this timely newspiece might be an indication I could use my own EU account/DRM for it.

    Seems not.

    I SLAP AT THEE.

    Lambtron:

This news is only useful for NA users because any demo downloaded from the Store requires that your PSP has a DRM certificate for that account on it. It can only hold one at a time, and if you have a NA demo and cert then you can no longer play and demo or bought game from the EU store.

And that sir, is very irritating.

I cant get it to download so would someone who has it mind uploading it somewhere?
  • Steroyd #10 4 years ago

You have to be logged on your US account to download it.

All you have to do is activate your PSP to the account takes a couple of seconds.

"And that sir, is very irritating."

Indeed. And why on Earth put DRM on a demo anyway?! Isn't the objective of a demo to promote the game and thus get it in the hands of as many people as possible?!

@ Steroyd - thanks, my psp was registered as a UK machine so Ive fixed it now.

Just out of interest, is there a particular reason why games etc. appear on the american site well before ours?

The company line is usually licencing, rating, or localisation issues.

I suspect (with no evidence) that, as a Sony America game, they want to ensure all downloads of the demo count as US downloads, which may or may not link to getting further games (not GoW) greenlit.

That, and Sony America and Sony Europe have a strange relationship, more like competitors than arms of the same business.
