God of War III epilogue was scrapped

"Maybe later."

God of War III originally had an epilogue that had to be cut during development, according to senior producer Steve Caterson.

"Probably the hardest cut was, we had a whole kind of epilogue at the end planned that we just never got... just didn't get done," Caterson told Gametrailers (thanks Kotaku).

"Maybe later," he added with a smile.

Asked where God of War III goes next, Caterson offered: "I think what I'm most excited about is seeing where this franchise goes, but I'm also excited trying something different, and then bringing what we learned and what we experienced by trying something different back to the franchise.

"And not necessarily revitalising it, but all that extra input, all that different input... You know, as an art form, any art form, the more experiences you can draw upon from other things, will just make what you're focused on so much better."

God of War III is due out exclusively for PS3 on 19th March in Europe. Check out our 9/10 review for God of War III elsewhere on the site.

  • davisorle #3 2 years ago

Well yeah, according to him they had the epil;ogue and yet... Didn't get done!? If this is the new trendy way of letting us know you decided to pass it out as a DLC then you might as well stfu and come out clean when the time is right.

They had to *cut content during development*? Surely this cannot be happening to a PS3-only game, can it?
    :-s

/FF13 going multi-format comments enter stage...

    @JonFE
I doubt they cut it because of size limitations, wich is what you are implying right?
Maybe they didn't have time to make it...

Yeah maybe it comes as dlc, but i saw that interview, on gametrailers i think... and nowhere did they mention or even hinted at dlc ;)

A seemly little frothing how dare the cut content to add as dlc mindset so far in this thread, well I guess it is early in morning.

hmm if this ends up being dlc it has to be cheap. like £2.99 cheap. but even if they stick to tht unlikely price point, the ending of the game itself has to wow me as some reviews have pointed out tht it is quite mundane and anti-climatic.

If they release the epilogue as DLC they could have shot themselves in the foot a little. Aside from the usual "content should be all on the disc" arguments, I've read quite a lot of reviews where they mark the game down for having an unsatisfying ending. Assuming this new ending is better than the current, on disk, version this could have been the extra kick needed to put those scores up to GOTY contender levels.

Every game has things cut. I've worked on a few titles and you'd be amazed at what doesn't make it into games. Story elements in particular are always prone to being chopped.

    @zepekit:

I was just being sarcastic. There was this big argument over content cut from multi-format FF13 due to x360's DVD size and how that content would not be cut if the game had remained PS3 exclusive. This was be a moot point since content has to be cut for various reasons besides storage limitations (like here), thus my comment.

Do people actually understand what epilogue actually means? Im guessing "no" from the comments.
  • Redeye #14 2 years ago

Probably some epic but incomplete end-level-long battle with some PO'd deity or another that got sliced at the last. So yeah, expect a level or two bolted on to the front, and a side-order of hype.
  • makeamazing #15 2 years ago

People can complain about content being cut, but surely a game is reviewed and rated based on the content that it has, not the content that never was or will be?
  • konniehuqfan #16 2 years ago

I reckon they'll release a director's cut with the epilogue included.
  • Moz #17 2 years ago

surely DLC is better then a Directors cut special adition 6 to 12 month down the line which was the old aproach to such cut content. (in the few cases where they bothered at all)
  • Murton #18 2 years ago

There's no hint as to what this epilogue actually was, it's quite possible that it was a lengthy cutscene depicting the events that take place after the final level of the game that had to be cut due to deadline constraints.

It's a shame that some companies over and indeed mis-use of DLC had lead to some gamers becoming so suspicious that they see content cut out for resale in every major release.

3 is enough. Knowing when to retire on a high is important. Look at Tomb Raider.
  • irve77 #20 2 years ago

so now we know why the game is so short .. save everything for DLC !

this is the fate of every big game from now on .. at least Multiplayer focused games all the DLC is map packs that i couldn't give a rat's arse about ... it annoys me when single player content is deliberately kept back
  • Shikasama #21 2 years ago

Murton - Our only hope is that comes back to bite said companies on the arse and teach them to stop it

Sometimes a low key ending can be just as satisfying. Look at ICO. Ofter the the REALLY big boss battle at the end is just a dull grind. GoW 2 had a rather weak finish in terms of gameplay compared to the first I thought, then a massive cut scene to tease for the third installment.
