God of War II trailer
Old bald-and-angry's back.
Pop your head round Eurogamer TV's door this morning and you'll find none other than a new God of War II trailer to air-punch along to.
In it we see Kratos kick all kinds of stool from his gargantuan enemies in an effort to change his slightly barbaric fate, by using a whole new set of moves and powers.
Cory Barlog, director for GoW II, has recently been splashing words about the game on his blog, which sounds a lot like our job. BACK OFF, CORY. He reckons all of the primary work is now done, and expects a demo to be pressed in February.
Unfortunately there's no confirmation of when we'll see the demo in Europe, but at least it sounds as though the full release in April is on track.

DMC 3 is a bit of an acquired taste really. The most obvious precursor to GoW, and just as smooth, frenetic and cinematic (think mid-air combos, chargeable attacks and gunplay) with more moves and better customisation, but damnably, screamingly hard. Plus it doesn't look quite as good (though no slowcoach in its own right) and lacks the gorgeous mythological backdrop. Oh, and Dante's as camp as a picnic basket.
EDIT. If you can bear going back that far the first DMC is arguably the most polished, with a better judged difficulty curve. Avoid the lacklustre second outing.

Hmmm... depends DMC to rack up combo's appears broken compared to GoW, the story progression is broken off into levels (ugh!!), and DMC has so many over the top nonsensical action sequences, and so many puns and cliche's that would make Eurogamer cry in their sleep.
Oh yeah and the lack of context sensitive enemies.
It really depends of what you liked in GoW TBH, GoW beats DMC in every area from battle system, upgrades, story, progression, graphics etc etc... what am i trying to do again?

You're welcome. I got my ps2 last April (just in time for finals, what fun). The back catalogue is proving a bottomless pit, and what's more I get to come on blogs like this one mocking the poor fools who've rushed to next-gen
Good quality sleeper titles in the genre include way of the samurai, a flawed but surprisingly deep and intuitive sandbox slasher.

I've played the second onimusha and quite liked it. Bit slow by comparison with GoW though. Would you recommend it over number 3?
Also has anyone heard anything further about valkyrie profile silmera? I heard it's out in feb...?

One could look at, for example, how many hits the main character receives during combat. I received at least 5 times as many in GoW normal mode than when I played Ninja Gaiden on very hard, and I still didn't have to use about half of the health and mana chests. It shows that at times GoW can feel like playing Diablo, it doesn't matter how you play because you have more or less stronger attacks and can get your health easily refilled.
And what's with the broken statues, surely the designers didn't think that ancient greeks did actually create their statues without limbs. Not that it matters (it doesn't matter at all) but the ancientgreekness of this game leaves a lot to be desired. Also the name kratos, it sounds dumb to a native speaker cause it means country or state in modern greek though iirc it could mean might in ancient times.
How can the combat system in DMC be in any way inferior to GoW. It's a good game but I think it's seriously overrated. I remember watching the extras of GoW and the overenthusiastic game designer was showing some deleted level where kratos was being chased by some sandstorm or sth and though it was just the same old crash bandicoot thing that has been done a trillion times already in pretty much every single platform game ever, he was like "omg this was so cool, god i wish we could keep it, cause it's soo cool that if people played this the whole fucking world would be a better place, but damn it's too complex and too fucking awesome and genius and original to be implemented in real time so i'm sorry to say this but people won't be having 100 orgasms per second by jumping around like idiots trying not to get caught by the sandstorm thing " what a bunch of bollocks

God of War certainly brought a grin to my face when I played it - it seemed to really hit the 'gaming' nail on the head for me - quite aside from being a very pretty PS2 game, its combination of intuitive movement and combat, mildly brain-tickling nearly-puzzles, those satisfyingly gory finishing moves and the sufficiently comprehensive skills-upgrade system ticked all the boxes.
Seemed to fuse old-school play values with a thoroughly modern facelift, in a way that I'm sure State of Emergency aimed to do but never did.
So hopefully more of the same, and not any additions or deviations that make the sequel worse.

pwning GoW for historical inaccuracy is rather like saying that lightsabers are unrealistic. You miss the point, dear chap
I'd suggest you go back and play it on hero or god mode. Might compare more favourably to NG then. I'd also say that difficulty does not a good game make.

It isn't a matter of historical accuracy. I don't care if athens is being destroyed by Ares because obviously this is fictional work. It's just that it's kinda funny when you think about it. The ancient greek statues you see in museums appear destroyed because they were physically destroyed as thousands of years passed since their creation. It's not because the ancient greeks created them like this on purpose.
And I remember some particular cutscenes of the sort that Metal_Slime mentioned, ugh, it's not that they offend you or anything they just look kind of dumb. I guess I sound too negative about this game but that's not true. It still manages to be fun despite all these flaws

Point taken about the statues and cutscenes but I don't consider these flaws. GoW is a big, bolshy epic that buys unashamedly into all kinds of stereotypes (since when was Ares a five-hundred-foot tall goth?) and cheesy cinematic conventions. Subtlety isn't a priority, to put it mildly. You just have to lower your tolerance levels a little
