Gizmondo is coming back - it's official
Carl Freer involved once again.
Eurogamer has learned that failed handheld Gizmondo is indeed set to make a comeback.
The project is being driven by UK electronics design firm Plextek and former Gizmondo Europe director Carl Freer.
Eurogamer spoke to Plextek's technical director, Ian Murphy, this morning. When asked if it's true Gizmondo will return he replied, "That's correct, yes."
"There are a few things to do, and it will be a while before that happens," Murphy continued. "But yes, the product has been recovered from the liquidators and we are bringing it back to market."
Murphy said that most of Gizmondo's executives are not involved in the project. That includes Stefan Eriksson, who pleaded no contest to charges of embezzlement in November 2006 and was recently released from prison.
However, Murphy confirmed, Carl Freer is working with Plextek to bring Gizmondo back. Freer's activities were questioned after Gizmondo Europe made huge losses and later went into liquidation, but according to Murphy, "He was proven innocent of all charges."
Gizmondo launched in the UK in March 2005, priced at GBP 229, with a US launch following in October. The company went into liquidation in February 2006.
When asked why he believes the new Gizmondo will succeed where the previous one failed Murphy replied, "We will get it into the market.
"The only reason Gizmondo was not a success last time round was it was not fully brought into the market," he said.
Murphy declined to give any indication of when the new Gizmondo will launch.

Those nintendo guys embezzle all the time. But they're inside the market. We just need to be inside the market like them, you see. So if you could give some cash to us there won't be any problems. Because the market our ally and a strong ally it is. Market.

And worked with iTunes.
Anyone seriously investing in this should immediately kill themsleves so they can go on the 2008 Darwin list.

On the downside it had the worst D-pad buttons I've ever witnessed in my entire life. There were probably some other things bad about it too.
No developer of standing is going to want to get involved in this platform after its bizarre history. I guess it will create a source of revenue for small indies, which is no bad thing. Though could any of them feel confident that they would get paid in the end?
Clearly I have some issues over Gizmondo that I need to address with a therapist

You seem to know a bit about the Gizmondo.
Were you actually stupid enough to buy it the first time round?

The Gizmondo stand appeared to have no product...instead it had a load of Indian guys, a load of semi-clad models...a Harley Davidson and some sort of Hummer. And A Tent.
Very strange indeed.

I worked on a Giz product a long time ago. It was a really fun project to work on, but that was in spite of the platform itself. Following the news about the Swedish mafia connections, whilst developing a title for the platform, made for interesting water cooler discussions.
Ah, I see. You meant did I actually buy a unit myself.... Hell no!
