GHWT launch DLC exclusive to X360 News

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

9 October, 2008

Activision has announced plans to release a bunch of premium downloadable content for the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero World Tour during its first week of release. (UPDATE: Activision has clarified the original release, which was slightly ambiguous. Only the REM content mentioned below will be 360-exclusive. Original story continues below in tragic error.)

Songs from REM, Boston, Foreigner, Rick Springfield and Blind Melon, along with a pair of original Guitar Duel tunes, will all be exclusive to 360 for two weeks from 30th October, and then sold on PlayStation Store as well.

Activision has still yet to confirm the Guitar Hero World Tour release date for Europe, but our money's on 7th November.

So, the tracks to which Xbox 360 owners have exclusive buying privileges for a fortnight from the 30th, then, are headlined by an REM Track Pack, consisting of three songs from new album Accelerate - "Horse to Water", "Man-Sized Wreath" and "Supernatural Superserious". All three can be bought separately too.

Then there's the Classic Rock Track pack, featuring "Rock and Roll Band" by Boston, "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner and "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield, while "No Rain" by Blind Melon is man enough to be sold on its own.

Finally, Activision notes that original compositions by Ted Nugent and Zakk Wylde for Guitar Duels will be free at launch, although this presumably means that the songs are in GHWT as Duels and will be opened up for general play through this download.

The publisher also reminds us that people who have bought Metallica's Death Magnetic album for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock will also be able to play it with World Tour.

Guitar Hero World Tour is due out for Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 and Wii, and features a Rock Band-style array of instruments: drums, microphone and guitars. However, it also boasts a music studio for making custom songs and a special GHTunes services for distributing them.

Check out our most recent Guitar Hero World Tour hands-on preview for more, and watch out for our review in the run-up to the game's launch.

That's not news. Marketplace always gets stuff first anyway, just through being better. Nice to know you can buy GH tracks on their own and not forced into bundles now, though.

I wonder if they're going to make the DLC cheaper to compete with Rock Band. The most irritating thing about GH DLC is that they don't offer single tracks for every pack. It's not so bad if they're all from the same artist because if you like one you'll usually like them all, but when they have the genre packs it's a pain paying for two rubbish tracks just to get one awesome one.

Two weeks? Not such a big deal, and not really deserving any news in my opinion.
Sound more like better organization on Microsoft's part rather than any kind of actual exclusivity deal.

None of those songs interest me much unfortunately.

I'm just looking foward to Obstacle 1 by Interpol - not enough of Interpol on this or Rock Band
