Ghostbusters: The Videogame Hands On

Xbox 360 PC PlayStation 2 PlayStation 3 Wii
Hands On by Ellie Gibson

12 March, 2009

Page 3 of 3. <- Page 2

Alternatively, you could try out the Wii version. Unlike the Xbox 360 and PS3 games, which are being developed by Terminal Reality, it's being worked on by Redfly Studios, and has quite a different look. It's much more cartoony, though in more of a Pixar than a Real Ghostbusters way, thankfully (no blonde Egons here).

The remote is used to control your proton beam - yanking it around slams ghosts to the floor, for example. The nunchuk is or things like throwing traps out and de-sliming yourself by shaking it about. The Wii game has clearly been designed with family fun in mind, and there's a split-screen, drop-in drop-out mode for co-operative play.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 titles also have a co-op mode, one that allows you to play online and communicate via headsets. You can play as one of the Ghostbusters or the rookie, and choose from six job types - your character might specialise in capturing the most ghosts, for example, or eliminating spawn points, stopping spooks from stealing key items and so on. I didn't get the chance to play this, but in the video shown during the game presentation it was looking good.

Which applies to Ghostbusters: The Videogame. The character designs are great and the environments are detailed, realistic and well lit, with huge scope for smashing them to bits. Scorch marks appear with one sweep of your proton stream, flames lick carpets and walls, chairs splinter, tables topple and books fall off shelves just like you'd expect them to. You can also use your proton stream to pick things up and fling them around, which is mostly pointless but enjoyable all the same.

That said, there are also some serious bugs in the game which need to be sorted out. Characters get stuck behind scenery or in animation loops now and again. Sometimes they take ages to open the door or finish the conversation which opens up the next part of the level. Those one-liners can repeat themselves, and they aren't so funny the fourth time around. And some of the cut-scene visuals need serious work.

However, both Atari and Terminal Reality are confident these issues can be resolved in time for the game's June release date. "We've just finished content completion and we're going through the initial pass of bug fixing," explains Goss. "Obviously with such a dynamic set, it takes a lot to get all of that perfect, and we're in those final phases now."

'Ghostbusters: The Videogame' Screenshot 5

How could anyone name a beautiful tiny perfect baby Egon?

Assuming those bugs are fixed, Ghostbusters could break the curse of the rubbish movie tie-in. Most games like this fail because they don't capture the spirit of the film or aren't authentic enough, which is certainly not the case here, or because the gameplay is just plain rotten. But what I've played of Ghostbusters so far is great fun. It's clear that Terminal Reality has thought carefully about what fans of the film really want - not just to "be" a Ghostbuster, but to enjoy the same humour, excitement and strong narrative thread they love the film for. For that reason alone, this game is more likely to succeed than all those other tie-ins. But what does its most important critic think?

"Of all of the movie's stars, Dan probably plays the game the most. He's had the most exposure because it's such a huge passion for him," says Goss. So what does he reckon Aykroyd would give the game out of ten? "Ten, definitely."

"Nah," chips in creative director Drew Hayworth, "Eleven."

Ghostbusters: The Videogame is released for DS, PC, PS2, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 on 19th June.

I'm trying to keep a firm lid on my hopes for this, just in case, but it actually sounds like they might fix some of these bugs rather than have them all turn up in the finished code. Just let it be fun, and without any major things breaking the game, and I think it will have done it's (incredibly difficult) job.

Oh and don't make Ghostbusters 3 with Seth Rogen, cheers.

"The Ghostbusters don't just look and sound like their real-life counterparts, they move around and gesticulate like them; Murray's casual swagger, for example, is instantly recognisable."

Yeah maybe but in the main game mode it'll never be *your* swagger. I was a huge fan of this idea but I think turning the lead character into 'a new recruit' is a huge mistake. Maybe in co-op you'll be able to play as a proper Ghostbuster but not enough imo.

My guess is that this will be a good one. This isnt really a movie tie in since its not based on a new film. The problems with movie tie ins is the lack of time to complete the game since the game will be released at the same time as the movie. Games like Escape from Butcher Bay where this isnt the case has the potential to be as good as any other non movie based games.

They've (Terminal Reality) have had extra time to finish this thanks to the Acti-Blizzard/Atari changeover and that's a huge bonus.

Unless you've worked in the industry you really won't know how common it is for promising projects to get utterly wrecked thanks to publishers' inflexibility when coming to deadlines. The last few weeks can utterly make or break your game, and if you're constantly side-tracked by fire-fighting/doing stuff that should have gotten done earlier in the dev-cycle for whatever reason, all your hard work over the preceding months can go right down the drain.

That's not excusing bad games, but in so many cases calling developers "lazy" for failing to fix stuff is way off the mark.

This does sound very, VERY good. I am officially VERY excited, which is a shame, as like schnide I was trying to keep a lid on my enthusiasm!

I very much doubt it'll be quite as good as the old Spectrum version though... maybe that could be tarted up for XBLA?!

It sounds good. I'm just worried about Atari's fixation with allowing things to get out the door while being hilariously unfinished (Driv3r, Alone in the Dark, etc etc.).

This is sounding better each time I read a piece of info on it, and I just love the fact that the Aykroyd is so involved in it's development!

Great to hear that not only is it truly authentic but also a great game engine by all accounts.

I am going to go out on a limb here and call a 7/10 for this game.

In terms of the look of the game, it seems spot on. The fuzzy, warm feeling of 懐かしい you get when plaing the game will ensure it gets a relatively high score. But I imagine that it is a short, easily completed experience with a few bugs that will be around still when it hits retail.

So it seems that when the game was dropped there was no development on it? Wasnt this game supposed to be released last year before the publisher problems.... seems strange that at this point there are still major bugs and they have only just completed content.? /me is confused.

From the sound of it, trapping a ghost with a proton pack works quite a bit like it did in Luigi's Mansion. Not a bad thing, mind. Great news that it's turning out well so far.

To be out in June, they need to submit the game in April and that's IF it passed first submission! April ain't far off.

I think there is a balance to be had. Clearly you have a bee in your bonnet about the ResEvil thing, but are we to assume that the only two things this site can provide is discussions about race and jokes about poo?

I happen to think that many of the reviews on this site are well thought out and well written. There are a few misses of course, but when I think about some of the video reviews on IGN, I think EG hit the mark more often than most.

Maybe its just a matter of taste. I have a bit of a thing for proper journalism you see. I don't want an article to just be funny, I want it to tell me something that I can't just find out for myself. Don't get me wrong, I think Ellie has a razor sharp sense of wit and her dry cynisism is right up my street. But, without sounding mean, I don't think she is the best journalist on the site. And at the risk of sounding downright rude, I think sometimes her cynisism and wit is used as a vehicle for putting in less effort (that certainly felt like the case with the "most influential games ever" article, which some may remember drove me insane with rage :) ).

"Would this be Dan "I took the role of Britney's Dad in Crossroads" Ackroyd?"

I would, in all seriousness, rather spoon my eyes out, soak them in salt and lemon juice, coat them in chilli and pop them back in than watch Crossroads, but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that he was an evil doppleganger and not the real Mr. Aykroyd.

"I bet everyone was pleased that George Lucas said he was going to direct all the new Star Wars movies too."

We knew Lucas was creatively bankrupt many years before EP 1 though. A New Hope directors cut conclusively proved that.

I'm a bit sceptical as to why the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man should be a major boss in the game. Surely he was destroyed in the first film? I'm sure there's a narrative sidestep made by the game to fit him in there, but wouldn't it be all the better for a new major character?

From what we've heard about the game's story, it starts with a Gozer exhibit at the library. Stay Puft in the film was a form of Gozer that Ray thought of because it was "something that could never possibly destroy us". I assume that with Gozer returning in the game, it initially appears in that form again. It could also be another ghost taking on a similar form. Point is there was no ghost that originally looked like Stay Puft - something took on that form, so it could be anything in this game.
