First tracks for Guitar Hero 5 revealed News

PlayStation 2 Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Robert Purchese

10 July, 2009

Activision has confirmed the first flock of songs for Guitar Hero 5, which launches this September on PS2, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360.

It's diverse, as David Bowie plays neighbour to Vampire Weekend and Iggy Pop follows Beastie Boys and Blur. Chart-topper Kings of Leon swaggers in, as does old twiddly-hand Santana, plus there's giant-man Chris Martin with Coldplay, and real-life guitar hero Jeff Beck.

To celebrate the reveal, Activision is giving away a free song by Wolfmother from upcoming album Cosmic Egg. "Back Round" can be downloaded from the official Guitar Hero 5 website.

The first 24 confirmed songs follow. Activision, remember, has already confirmed the 84 bands appearing in Guitar Hero 5.

  • Band Of Horses - "Cigarettes, Wedding Bands"
  • Beastie Boys - "Gratitude"
  • Beck - "Gamma Ray"
  • Billy Squier - "Lonely Is The Night"
  • Blur - "Song 2"
  • Bob Dylan - "All Along The Watchtower"
  • Children Of Bodom - "Done With Everything, Die For Nothing"
  • Coldplay - "In My Place"
  • Darkest Hour - "Demon(s)"
  • David Bowie - "Fame"
  • Deep Purple - "Woman From Tokyo ('99 Remix)"
  • Elliott Smith - "L.A."
  • Iggy Pop - "Lust For Life (Live)"
  • Jeff Beck - "Scatterbrain (Live)"
  • John Mellencamp - "Hurts So Good"
  • Kings Of Leon - "Sex On Fire"
  • Queens Of The Stone Age - "Make It Wit Chu"
  • Rose Hill Drive - "Sneak Out"
  • Santana - "No One To Depend On (Live)"
  • The Bronx - "Six Days A Week"
  • Thrice - "Deadbolt"
  • Tom Petty - "Runnin' Down A Dream"
  • Vampire Weekend - "A-Punk"
  • Wolfmother - "Back Round"

Meh. I can imagine Song 2 being good in a party situation, but other than that there's nothing that grabs me.

Nothing that standout for me. Maybe I've burned out on this.

I'm desperate for Bowie (preferably on Rock Band) but 'Fame' is most definitely not what I'm looking for.

There's some I wouldn't mind playing there. For me Rhythm Action games are more about the mechanics than the track list, as I generally find I can go along with any music if I'm enjoying the game. I mostly discovered this through many hours of Singstar. So many songs I would never listen to, but am more than happy to sing.

So yeah, I'll stick with Rock Band.

They could have picked a much better Darkest Hour track but Demon(s) will have to do I guess!

After seeing the band lineup, I had higher hopes than this. Hopefully the other songs will be better.

Couldn't agree more. I'd love to see more Bowie in either game, especially in master track form

Based on that list so far, this could very well be the first "core" GH game that I don't buy at launch. Looking at that list I'm starting to wonder what the major difference between this and Band Hero are going to be? Is Band Hero going to be filled with McFly, Pink and....... erm...... that US Pop Idol bint....... Kelly Clarkson

And if you're going to put "All Along the Watch Tower" on there the Hendrix version would have been a better choice. Dylan's original is good but the Hendrix cover is far stonger from a Guitar Hero context.

Why not give away a free track for GHWT?

A couple of those tracks would be OK on Rock Band but nothing too interesting there.

Looking incredifail at the moment, especially for the fact they aren't using Hendrix's version of All Along The Watchtower. If they happen to include Holy Wars as the Megadeth song I'll be sold regardless though.

Queen have been announced as being on the full set-list. It's actually been announced as Queen + David Bowie, which means that it'll be "Under Pressure"

Finally someone has actually picked a Beastie Boys song that will work properly in a band game, and easily one of their best tracks as well.

Well of that list there's nothing there and screams out as a must have apart from QOTSA. And I'll tell you why, cause they're QOTMFSA.

Vampire Weekend? Um. No.

Great to see Elliott Smith on that list. Great artist and sadly missed.
I'm usually a Rock Band player, but the tracklisting sounds quite promising so I think i'll shell out for GH for the first time in ages.

sex on fire is one of their worst songs IMO. Anyway, track list looks slightly underwhelming to me. Maybe i've just played too much of this rhythm action malarkey??

Whew, at least I'm not the only one who's feeling a bit unimpressed by this list. Song 2 and sex on fire would be great in a party situation, but not much there that grabs for solo play... Or much else to play with a group...

This pretty much sums up my feelings about the setlist so far. No offence intended Jontam.
The RB setlists have always left me cold and looking through this list reminded me of the sort of list I'd expect from RB not from GH.
