Genji team's new PS3 game News

News by Robert Purchese

17 May, 2007

Sony America has been showing off a new fantasy adventure called Folklore at an event in San Diego.

It's being developed by Game Republic of "massive damage" Genji fame, and is a dark tale inspired by western fairy tales. Hence the name.

You play as either the realist Keats or the dreamer Ellen, each with their own back story, personality, and reason for venturing into the mysterious Netherworld. It's here you'll explore several vastly different environments, from the ruins of Undersea City to the infinite maze of the Endless Corridor.

And, of course, you'll face off against fantastical beasties. But here's where it all gets a bit different. Each monster has its own special power, you see, and you'll be able to literally "shake" it to a standstill and "yank" it from them. All thanks to the marvellous motion-sensor in the Sixaxis pad.

Eventually you'll command around 100 powers that will jet out from you in the form of spirits. And it looks like you'll have a tough time making your mind up about which to choose and which to leave out.

Unfortunately no date has been set for the game yet, but we wouldn't hold our breath about seeing it in Europe this year.

Indulge yourself in the latest Folklore trailer over on Eurogamer TV.

Hopefully Game Republic have learnt how to do proper camera angles plus actual camera control because they were the things that really let Genji down on the PS3 in my opinion. Otherwise that game wasn't as bad as some of the reviews made out but at the same time it wasn't anything special either. I picked the game up for under £20 and quite enjoyed it bar aforementioned camera issues. Lovely graphics though...

As long as the camera isn't as bad as Genji 2's, this looks awesome.

Will there be a feature that allows for changing of weapons in a real-time fashion?

New IP, new IP, new IP! We'll see how the makers handle it, but it sounds very interesting.

Oops... Checked the trailer and this is the game Monster Kingdom: Unknown Realm, just renamed. Well, it is new IP, alright, but it's not totally new.

Does sound interesting but I'm very cautious considering what that demo of Genji is like. Very pretty but a total pain to actually play, not to mention the pretty awful slowdown in the second section.

Looks really nice, love the art style. I quite liked Genji 2 other than the annoyingly spaced save points and (thankfully rare) spastic platforming, so am looking forward to Games Republic's new effort quite a bit.

Ah, this is the game now known in Japan as Folks Soul.

This looks pretty promising, although personally I really don't like any sort of motion sensitive crap.

As everybody else has already said, this all depends on whether they've learnt from their mistakes on Genji: Days of the Blade; lovely graphics but non-existent camera control making fights dreadful and a total lack of any sign-posting - remember the body in the courtyard with the key on it? I would never have known about that without resorting to Googling a walkthrough after going around and around in circles for an hour and getting nowhere. Horrible horrible game. Also why don't the downloadable costume packs work properly - can you only have one on the system at a time? Am I doing something wrong?

Anyway, concept of the new game sounds interesting, as long as they have a new development team...

This game looks great. Love the art style and Tim Burton kind of fantasy thing. It's just the sort of game I bought my PS3 to play, so hopefully it'll come to Europe this year!

Reading that this was from the creators of Genji, I really wasn't expecting much - but the trailer actually looks really cool. I'll definitely keep an eye on this one.

This must have been in development for a while, so the dev team must differ at least partly from the Genji Team

It's from the guy who did Shin Megami Tensei (which shows in the way you use monsters as weapons/attacks), the camera angle can be set manually, you can change weapons in real-time, you only have to use sixaxis if you want to capture monsters' souls faster, it looks fantastic (The meadow...!), now will you just cut out the lame Genji-massive-damage jokes, get the demo instead and see for yourself?
