Gears of War 2 on magazine cover News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

4 February, 2008

US magazine GamePro has unveiled the cover for its latest issue, which includes references to "Gears of War 2" despite Rainbow Six Vegas 2 taking the headline spot.

Gears of War 2 appears twice - once above the magazine logo and once in a sidebar, beneath a picture of the original game's distinctive bloody skull with a "2" stuck to the side of it

The text accompanying the cover on GamePro's website doesn't mention or clarify any of this.

Inevitably this has led to yet more speculation that GOW2 will be unveiled at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco in two weeks' time.

Along with the cover, details supporting this theory include recent news that Xbox Live man John Schappert will deliver a keynote and developer Epic reportedly snapping up a huge stand next to Microsoft's.

What's more, recent reports that Kudo Tsunoda has joined Microsoft claimed that the former EA executive is "project lead on an upcoming Gears of War title", citing "sources".

Microsoft and Epic have yet to comment publicly on whether Gears of War 2 will be unveiled at GDC.

However, Epic Games vice president Mark Rein has told Eurogamer that GDC is "the show where we sell our engine not our games".

He also pointed out that blogged images of Epic and Microsoft's stands unfairly compared the size of show floor booths to expo suites, which accounted for the fact that - for instance - Microsoft's stand could apparently eat Nintendo, Sony and Nokia and still have room to wash them down with the German Pavilion.

Rein also told Eurogamer that if either of Epic's publishers (Microsoft for Gears of War 1 and Midway for Unreal Tournament 3) wanted to make game-related announcements, it would have nothing to do with the developer's presence as an engine provider.

GDC runs from 18th to 22nd February.

Isn't gears 2 a inevitable game. I would think that it's got to have been in developement since shortly after gears 1. I wouldn't be suprised at a late 2008/ early 2009 release. The look and feel of gears is now a known quantity so it's going to be down to story and settings now.

Chrismas would be my guess.

So overhyped that it's still position 5 last week (and 3 or 4 again this week) on the most played games list. Just because YOU didn't like it, doesn't make it a bad game. But of course one would actually have to play the game to form an opinion on it (if your profile is anything to go by).

Having just completed Gears, I was surprised at the game play. I guess I was expecting a lot, after all the advertising last year (was it last year, or 2006? No matter). Although, despite the relatively simple game play, I did find it incredibly fun, even more so in coop. Graphics were awesome of course, I wonder if they can improve upon them for a sequel?

I played it and completed it thanks. I never said it was a bad game either, just didn't think it lived up to the enormous hype.

What has this got to do with GDC though really? I think MS are out of line this time - if the announcement really will be made there.

@Tweakmonkey

I guess Sony was out of line for hyping LBP at last year's GDC, right?

Fruit_salad I think he meant to say "thanks" then instead of "omg M$ lies".

I dont think it would be a bad thing to reveal the game especially if the engine itself has overgone an overhaul like they said in the interview. Just as long as they dont overdo it... show off the engine and a quick glimpse at the game. Hopefully theres going to be a native 360 engine with a big budget in the works on display to... as nice as UE3.x may be it would be a shame if nobody took a risk on something like that, might be necessary in the long run if Sony keep pushing devs to do the same.
