Gears of War 1 to unlock Gears 2 content

Achievements equal skins by the look of it.

Gears of War 2 will allow you to unlock content by earning Achievements in Gears of War 1.

That's according to Cliff Bleszinski, speaking at Comic-Con (thanks Kotaku), who also detailed a few of the "linked Achievements".

According to Bleszinski (and bear in mind that these might be considered spoilers!), if you completed Act One in the first game, you'll unlock a playable Anthony Carmine in the sequel.

If you found ten COG tags, you'll unlock Minh Young Kim, and if you killed General Raam, you'll unlock a playable version of the cuddly old dinosaur in Gears of War 2 as well.

Kotaku notes that Bleszinski didn't clarify whether these will be for single-player or multiplayer, but we'd put our money on the latter.

As you will know if you've been following coverage of Gears of War 2, including our hands-on and interview with Bleszinski from E3, Epic has yet to say whether you'll play as anyone other than Marcus and Dom in the single-player/co-op campaign.

While we're on the subject of Gears at Comic-Con, attendees were also told that Steve Jablonsky is working on the score.

Jablonsky's IMDB page reveals that his past videogame work includes a couple of recent Command & Conquer games, and that on the silver screen he's worked on the Transformers movie and American horror films.

Interesting... I always wondered why games didn't do stuff with old saves. Doesn't even have to be a save from your own game :)

This is what Achievements should do.

A few EA Sports games used to recognise old game saves and unlock stuff in the newer game, for example, Tiger Woods and Madden NFL.

I presume these extra characters can also be unlocked through playing Gears of War 2 as well?

Er a lot of games do this. The Hulk gives you Iron mans hulkbuster as a skin if you have an iron man save on your harddrive or memory card. A lot of old PS2 games did this with saves from previous games in a trilogy etc. etc.

In short, it ain't a new thing!

Excellent idea, glad I kept my old gamer profile on a Memory Card for when they make Live Gold free and I come back to the 360 :p

Okay, so that won't happen, but it is an awesome idea. Hopefully those that got "Seriously..." will get something appropriately good, like a Brumak skin.

Err?? Your gamer profile is saved on a server. No need to keep it "backed up".

True, but I definetly recomend the mem card save, the "recovery gamertag" takes ages. Almost like FW upgrade on a PS3.

Two games talking to each other - It seems like P. Molyneux has given people ideas, he has to be given the credit.

I thought MS did not allow cross-game achievement unlocks, pretty sure I read that somewhere.
  • asphaltcowboy #11 4 years ago

I don't think this is a cross-game achievement - it's not like you get an achievement in Gears 2 for something you did in Gears 1, you just get some bonus content.
  • mattigan #12 4 years ago

The extra skins are not achievements, just character models that unlock quicker if you've fulfilled certain conditions in a previous game.

well, im still trying to get the seriously achievement...ffs 10,000 kills just takes too much time. i don't understand how people can find the time (and dedication) to get this achievement in the first 3 months of gears 1.

hopefully that achievement unlocks a super cool thingy....:-)

I think PGR4 already does that with PGR3, although they need to be able to be unlocked by other means that does not require owning previous games.

Yeah, "I Love PGR - Buy everything in the PGR Shop or complete PGR 3 and get to Rank #1".

I remember Ultima allowed player to be able to carry characters over from game to game... so if you created a party in U4, you could transfer the characters to U5 (with a slight stat-hit) - I seem to remember a lot o RPG's used to do the same back in the eighties, though I think Ultima came the closest to implementing it properly (i.e. no reducing character stats/weapons too much, not allowing the player to start the game with an overly powerful avatar)
  • andywilkie35 #17 4 years ago

the PS2 ratchet and clank games did this, where you'd get exclusive weapons if you'd played/unlocked them in the previous games

but this sounds great, gives you even more incentive to unlock achievements! I hope more games do this

In the late 90s, having either an Exhumed or a Quake save on your Saturn allowed you to play Death Tank in Duke Nukem 3D.

    @Aspic

You don't have to still own Gears 1 when Gears 2 comes out. Gears 2 just looks at the achievements and saves for gears 1 on your system and unlocks extra skins according to what you did. The skins can also be unlocked by playing through Gears 2 normally. All it takes is extra time.
  • Shakey_Jake33 #20 4 years ago

@penhalion - I think Aspic is (quite reasonably) looking at this from another angle, and seeing that content in GoW2 will be locked unless you have already owned and played the original game. Two ways to look at it.
