Gears 2 actor teases details

Brumak fight, new kit and people.

Actor John DiMaggio, who voices Marcus Fenix in Gears of War 2, has dropped hints about the game's contents, mentioning a Brumak fight, new weapons, enemies and characters.

DiMaggio told IGN Australia that he's doing GoW2 "right now" and reprising Marcus Fenix and one of his other characters, Franklin - the chap who owned the Junker, as you may remember.

On the Brumak, DiMaggio says "they fight him now", going on to mention "new weapons, new beasts" and "a couple of new characters". He also says that the story bits explaining what's going on are "a lot deeper".

Gears of War 2 was announced at GDC last week, and is due out in November exclusively on Xbox 360.

All we've seen so far is a chainsaw bayonet clash between silhouetted characters, and a few suggestive Unreal Engine 3 tech demos - for things like wobbly meat, destructible scenery and water.

We spoke to Epic Games' Mark Rein at GDC but he was keeping details quiet.

John DiMaggio is my hero! I would love to have his Futurama voices. I'd scare the crap out of my friends... :)

I was at the conference and the wobbly meat didn't impress anyone who knows about physics engine.

    Boring techi bits

All physics engines start out as wobbly meat engines. By this I mean that all engines start out without the rigid body physics we have all come to know and love. Instead the objects act like the meat cubes and blob you saw. We then add rigid body on top of that. In short (and rather defying logic) all physics engines start out far MORE capable than they end up. If you aren't sure what I mean, a great book to dispell all this aw and worship surrounding such announcements (and a book that sits on many a professional coders desk) is Game physics engine development

If you are looking for a career in gaming you can do far worse than read this book (oh and get a degree too while you are at it) hint hint.

Don't the blessed PC users get to fight a Brumak in the Windows version of GoW? That really pissed me off. Too many games are adding content to the PC version after its console release. The Halo games were guilty. Lost Planet is guilty. I mean Xbox users had Dead Rising and yet only the PC and PS3 versions have Frank West as an unlockable character! Dead Rising isn't on either of them! And now, Mass Effect is gonna do the same I bet.

When you say a game is EXCLUSIVE to a console, try and keep it that way. Or at least make the ports the same.

    @razorus

What the smeg are you going on about re dead rising? How can you have an unlockable character when he is the main character? And I wasn't aware Dead Rising was out on PC or PS3. Are you some sort of tit?

Arbiter - actually, if you look at early physics engiones - indeed, if you look at the HL2 engine! - soft body is very overabundant. That's why corpses caught in doors in Oblivion etc flap around so badly. HARD body and weight are a lot harder to do, and that's why it tends to freak out.

    @sanctusmortis
What? Ragdolls and bodies are not soft, they're a combination of rigidbodies with constraints, linked to each other. HL2 physics is Havok, which doesn't support soft bodies as demonstrated in that tech demo.

Well, I thought the tech demo looked very impressive anyway. The water was pretty, the meat/blob effects looked really cool and (hopefully) hint at some funky encounters (kill the Brumak then jump up and down on his soft spongy belly!) but the destructable scenery was probably the best bit.

Things I want to see in next-gen physics engines:

    1) Proper water displacement
    2) Volumetric smoke and fire that can be displaced or blown by wind
    3) Large-scale destructable surfaces, so you can bring down entire buildings

Of course, I don't know how much of that is possible at the moment...
  • SomaticSense #11 4 years ago

I dunno, didn't Global Defence Force do the destructible buildings thing on PS2?

Although I'm sure that's not what you were getting at...

@Uncle_Fishboy: He said that Lost Planet is guilty for having more content on the PC. As in: Even though the Xbox360 had Dead Rising as well, only on the PC you can have Frank West (together with MegaMan) as an unlockable character in Lost Planet.
  • Razorus #14 4 years ago

Thank you, AL7AIR, yes that's what I meant. Was a simple grammatical mistake I made Uncle_Fishboy. That doesn't make me a tit.

Just to reiterate; you can play as Frank West in the PC and PS3 (right?) version of Lost Planet, which is not fair because Dead Rising is not on PS3, so why sould they get Frank when 360 users don't.

Also, while I'm at it: *bitch slaps SomaticSense*

Thanks to AL7AIR for clearing up Razorus's grammatical confusion.

Razorus, do you really give a toss about such things as unlockable characters here and there and extra content for other platforms that amount to next to bugger all. It doesn't seem very important to me. Have a piece of cake or something, maybe a mince pie. And some tea. You're probably not a tit but I like calling people tits.

*Bitch slaps Razorus and gives him a wedgie because he bitchslapped Somatic sense*

*gives AL7AIR a slice of victoria sponge*

*offers Somatic Sense a custard cream*

Everybody do the bender! Up yours, chumpette!
  • bodypopper #17 4 years ago

Yes, let's hope for Bender as an unlockable character complete with DiMaggio voiceover and chucking beer bottles instead of grenades.
  • Razorus #18 4 years ago

Some people like DLC Fishboy. But anyway, the main point was that I'm especially annoyed about the GoW PC version having more chapters etc. And it reminded me of the lack of crap 360 users get simply for having the first version of the game.
