Gearbox keen to revisit Brothers in Arms News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

23 October, 2009

Gearbox Software is confident about returning to World War II and Brothers in Arms now that Borderlands is done and dusted.

"I think you can probably expect at some point there'll be another Brothers in Arms game," Brian Martel, Gearbox vice president, told CBS (via VG247).

"You can probably expect that... If you look at the history of where we've been, where we're going... That'll be in the future for sure."

But even with Borderlands out of the way (released today - review), Gearbox still has a full slate: Aliens: Colonial Marines for SEGA, Duke Begins and three mystery games - one of which may or may not be a new Halo game.

Last autumn's Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway was the most recent instalment in the series, but fell slightly the wrong side of essential. Head over to our BIA: Hell's Highway review to find out why.

Hmmmm. The last installment went slightly in the wrong direction for me. So the series as a whole isn't really on my "oh, yes please, more of that" list anymore.

The last one seemed to be in development forever, after being revealed before Gears of War 1 in 2005 only to finally get released just after Gears2. I won't be holding my breath on this one.

I think the opposite. The game did seem to go the right way. Graphically was great and also it wasnt "just another FPS". It's different so I think ill be buying the next one too just for the fact it wont feel as if im playing another casual, not so great FPS. I dont know but I really enjoyed the other one even if it wasnt all that perfect.

Why bother? Five (I think) games in yet Brothers in Arms is hardly a franchise that has captured the imaginations of many. Put it to bed and do something else.

Brothers in Arms: Modern Warfare?

Well if the Aliens game ever gets released it's basically BIA in space with Xenomorphs instead of Nazis by all accounts. Which sounds like a slam dunk to me.

Duke Begins? Is that a Duke Nukem game that the world will never get to play?

The original looked and sounded great, but that was about it. The levels were painfully linear (there were all these invisible barriers across the gaps in the hedges that you couldn't go through but that Germans would spawn from), pointlessly restricted (loads of random roadblocks to force you down the way the game wanted) and annoying. The order system was stupid as you had to be able to look at the location in order to direct something to it, but when you peeked out to place the reticule for your tank to advance, you'd get your head shot off.

The review of the sequels sounds like nothing changed. You were still crucial to killing enemies, your squad were just there to make the enemy's suppress-o-meter fill up. And this got boring really quickly. I actually cheated to unlock the no suppression meters option just so it would be a bit more challenging.

BIA taught me that flanking is the only strategy that was ever used in combat throughout the entirety of WWII.

@davisorle at al

I meant it went the wrong way compated to the previous BIA games, not compared to FPS games on the whole. It definitely went the right way compared to many FPSs.

The first BIA was hilariously homoerotic. Even the title makes it sound like a march for gay rights.

"The last installment went slightly in the wrong direction for me. " I thought hells highway was an excellent single player game, which was very polished and tactical when played on the hard difficulty BUT the MP was one of the worst ive seen this gen in a high profile release(after wolfenstein) and the reason it was overlooked by many for cod WAW/gears2. If they can put the same amount of effort into the MP, the series can become a "truly" great WW2 fps once more.

Hasn't development on Duke Begins been stopped indefinitely due to the whole Take 2-3D Realms legal fight? Wasn't it the reason 3D Realms gave for counter-suing Take Two?

Are they going to be supporting borderlands with extra content? I hated all of the brothers in arms games yet I thoroughly enjoyed borderlands.

I have to mark you down, because my respect for those soldiers overrides everything else.

But I did have to wipe a bit of tea off my monitor after I read that...

Why does EG still insist on claiming Shitbox are making a Halo game, they are not good enough to make a new Halo game and MSoft have already said this.

Have to agree with metalangel, the linearity and lack of tactics in a war game really killed it for me. I guess it was intended for the console market where there's a huge shortage of decent FPS, but as a PC gamer it was a waste of money.

If you read "Band of Brothers" by Stephen E Ambrose you will see the next instalment will be Bastogne, that is what the snow reference is leading to.

A great game, I enjoyed it, I rented it, completed it and was going to buy the Wii double pack then I noticed the back of the box said gesture control for the troops. Bugger. The last thing I wanted was more waggle.

From a company who have a bad rep for releasing anything on schedule then as someone else said, wont hold my breath. The handling of Aliens is comical at best and Hell's Highway came far too late in the day to enjoy the praise it should have got for the bits they did get right. Single player was good to play through but the Mulitplayer was by far one of the worst games i have played online. The original xbox version puts it to shame.

These devs are pretty cool, even if they're not the best in the world, so it's great they're looking at what people thought to it.

I too had problem getting to grips with BIA:HH, until I realised that the game, is very much like Ubi's GRAW in WWII military clothing. When I approached it like GRAW, it was a lot easier to plug through. I have to say, its one of the 360 games I've got most of the achievements for, with close others being GRAW/GRAW2. I love a game that lets me order supporting troops around, and I'm looking forward to GRAW3.

If they want to do another BIA, I suggest they leave WWII alone, as its been over done now in games. Try lesser known conflicts like the Korean War, which I'm pretty sure nobody has touched yet in a game. Too sensitive and too soon? I don't think so now, as June 25th 2010 will mark the 60th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. Like WWII, most of those that fought in it, are very old and grey, and might not live long to tell their stories.

last BIA was a pretty adverage affair... with its paths more linear, and far too many throw away tank missions of mindlass distruction...limiting the need for tactics and statagy more than previous games.

The online was a total unplayable disgrace too... with more polish, less bugs, lag, and a general better quality coming from free mods on the PC

If Gearbox do make another then they need to be on form..stick to the initial ideas..as that first footage they showed of the game had it looking amazing..and didnt even make it into the final game
