Gearbox clams on Halo 4 chatter

Boss Randy Pitchford fails to deny it.

Is Gearbox working on a major new instalment of Halo for Microsoft? That's been the hot rumour since Randy Pitchford revealed his studio had a "huge" secret game in the works. And questioned by EGTV earlier this month, Pitchford skirted around the issue, falling short of a denial.

Asked outright, he replied: "Well, I'll tell you, there's a couple of games that Gearbox has announced. We've announced borderlands, and we've announced Aliens Colonial Marines with SEGA and Fox, and it's no secret that we have some other things in development."

Is one of those Halo? "Haha! We're not going to talk about anything..." At which point a PR man practically leaped from his seat to end the interview, mucking in with his own, "We can't talk about that." Here's a transcript of the rest of the conversation:

Eurogamer: That's not a no, though.

Pitchford: I appreciate why you're asking.

Eurogamer: That's not a no.

Pitchford: Haha! You got any other curveballs for me?

Eurogamer I don't think it was much of a curveball. It's quite a straight question...

Pitchford: It is a straight question, and it is fair. But you understand my... [recording terminated].

Gearbox has form here, having worked with Bungie and Microsoft to bring the original Halo onto PC. And Bungie, which split from Microsoft in 2007, has revealed that Halo 3: ODST and next year's Halo: Reach will be its final contributions to the universe.

So, is Gearbox working on Halo 4? Randy isn't saying. You can watch the exchange over on EGTV and judge for yourself, but with ODST rolling out soon and Reach due next autumn, don't expect anything official for a while.

Meanwhile, you can read our latest impressions of Gearbox's next title, Borderlands, elsewhere on Eurogamer.

Well, they did do a sterling job with Halo PC.

Bit much to have three Halo games in the works at the same time though, no? While it would be great to go forwards in the timeline as well as backwards with Reach and ODST, I'm not sure whether it could work.

    Still, I'd buy it.

I'd rather see a new IP tbh.

Would be nice and would make a change.

"I'd rather see a new IP tbh. "

    See Borderlands.
  • Syrette #12 3 years ago

Who said I wasn't seeing Borderlands?

I'm talking about from Microsoft's perspective, nothing to do with Gearbox.

Bit tired of them (MS) failing to take on new IP.

Nobody should make a Halo 4. The trilogy is over. If they insist on other games in the series, none of them should be called Halo 4 because that would imply Master Chief's story arc will continue which it doesn't need to be!

Instead, they should think of fresh ways to expand the Halo universe without milking it. So no Halo Kart or Halo Party Games.
An RPG (perhaps something like Fallout 3?) or a side-scrolling shoot 'em up on Live should be cool.
  • mazzl #14 3 years ago

    i agree with Razorus,
it could still be a halo game, but they should name it something different

halo: the master's rise, something like that ;)
  • Tricky #15 3 years ago

But Halo 3 blatantly ended with a hint that there was more for Master Chief to do (for those of you who have finished it on Legendary, anyway).

If they are working on this then I hope it's for the next Xbox. I want to be blown away again. We got plenty of Halo games in the pipeline for the 360.
  • WinterSnowblind #17 3 years ago

Again, as much as I love Halo, we don't need another game for a while. Keep working on it, and completely blow us away with it at the launch of the next Xbox. Reach and ODST will do us until then.

I don't mind if they continue Master Chiefs storyline, but I think one of the biggest strengths of the Halo universe is that a lot of it's interesting and very cool.. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of the ODST's, but there's a lot of other aspects and characters I'd love to see fleshed out more too. How about the Spartan III's?
  • The-Bodybuilder #18 3 years ago

It should be a launch for the next xbox (720?)
  • Yossarian #19 3 years ago

EG are barking up the wrong tree.
  • Xerx3s #20 3 years ago

    "I don't see any point in a Halo4 either"

Other than the fact that it's one of the most popular and wanted franchises, that it will sell a gazillion units, etc.?
  • fisherpot #21 3 years ago

I don't give a toss what you all might think! Sometimes the first can be the best and then in rare cases the second can match (Terminator2/ Empire Strikes) if not better and the 3rd in the story really has to pull it out the bag but when the hell is there going to be a 4th that matches? I know that 3's can be hard to work but at some point in time it will be done in a film or game I'm sure! There are to many skeptical gamers out there who suspect EG Takes them for rides on reviews! I have to say and I'm not a massive fan of xbox or ps3 but the AI on Halo 3 is the best out there by far! Play the game on Ledge and you will see all! Give Halo 4 a chance and that's if the will be a 4th! Just think............if it is rubbish then you know it is never to long before the next amazing game, sequel or trilogy is out! Eyes Peeled........they f**king will be!
  • bad09 #22 3 years ago

MS should be careful. I'm bored of Halo already and STD isn't even out yet......
  • M_of_the_sys #23 3 years ago

Why is this in the PS3 news section?
  • altitude2k #24 3 years ago

There is no way in hell that Bungie will never do another Halo game after Reach. Yes, they'll probably break with new IPs and returning to old ones (Marathon, Oni etc.) but to say they will NEVER return to the Halo universe... hmmmm....

Um, that's bullshit for a start.
