GDC: Rare refuels Jetpac News

Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

7 March, 2007

Rare got into the GDC spirit today by revealing the first footage of its new Live Arcade title, Jetpac Refuelled. You can find the trailer on our very own Eurogamer TV.

The game is a remake of the classic 16k Spectrum shooter from 1983, back when Rare was known as Ultimate Play The Game. Could this mark the beginning of major re-assessment of Rare's most ancient back catalogue?

The original Speccy game challenged players with floating Jet Man around the screen to gather wreckage from your crashed spaceship. With various baddies zoning in on you from all sides, you had to shoot them while trying to put your craftl back together again. Once you did that, you had to gather fuel, take off and do the same thing again on another planet.

The Xbox 360 version will feature more enemies and over 100 levels, with the camera panning further away from the action for each stage you advance past; eventually reducing your spaceman to a tiny blip surrounded by hordes of wacky aliens.

As usual, we can expect the usual HD resolution support, achievements and general next-generation polish.

You'll also be able to battle it out against your friends on Xbox Live, as up to four of you race to be the first to cobble together and refuel your spaceship. All the action will take place on one screen, and with waves of Martians to maul, it isn't as easy as it sounds.

There's no release date for the title as yet, and the price is also unconfirmed. More news soon.

I can not wait for this. Jetpac was one of my favourite Spectrum games. Even the updated bit looks like it's going to be a lot fun!

Was Solar Jet Man in anyway related to this?

I remember playing that on my NES, and loving it, so if this is anything like that, then bring it on!

Actually, the posh new version looks rather tidy. I initially thought it was just the retro version with boarders, and I had a bit 'ol rant all lined up.

Solar jetman was part 3 of the jetman series I believe.

As this is a budget title can it be sold as the original for £1.99 ?

Jetpac was my first ever speccy game. It was excellent to play until someone would slam a door nearby and the speccy would crash. For anyone who doesn't know, Lunar Jetman was the sequel, you had to drive a buggy round, fixing holes in the lunar surface so you could drive over them. I think you still had to build a rocket though. That was also excellent, and very pink, as I remember. The new Jetpac looks brilliant, sod viva pinata and perfect cack - this is what we really want. Lets have sabre wulf now but not rubbish and not impossible.

[in the article] I think you mean Speccy not Specct :)

iirc Jetpac was tucked away in DK64 in an arcade cabinet found in a level.

As "Ultimate Play The Game" began their descent from grace I recall someone submitting a joke Speccy loading screen to Crash in which their logo was rendered as:

"Alter It Sell The Name"

Which I thought was quite appropriate and witty.

I was playing Jetpac on my GP2X the other day and bloody good fun it was too. I'm really looking forward to this and hope other Speccy classics like Sabre Wulf, Atic Atac, Underwurlde, Alien 8 and Knight Lore are also on their way. I still have all my original ULTIMATE games too, although a few of 'em are a wee bit battered now.

Now you're making me feel old!
All those amazing cassettes absolutely full with demo's.

It's about time we had a renaissance of gaming - it's never been as much fun as it was on the speccy.

I loved Crash and could hardly wait for each Ultimate release. Knightlore was just amazing for its time.

I'm just glad to be a gamer now though for the obvious reasons. Plus I'd never had left the house if the games had the quality/depth they have now!

@JetSetWilly: Wasn't Jetpac hidden in Jet Force Gemini? Maybe they did both.

I think they're definitely minded to do all the old stuff - all the old characters being shown on one of the backgrounds certainly indicates they're drawing attention to their old stuff. Lunar Jetman would really whet my whistle.

Alien8 would be nice I suppose, but I don't think any of the isometric stuff would work well - they'd have to colour everything in..
