Maxis has confirmed that there are plans to develop a version of Spore for consoles - but said it won't be released alongside the PC and DS versions.

The confirmation came at this week's Leipzig GC, during a behind closed doors demo of the game. When asked whether Spore will hit consoles Maxis exec Patrick Buechener replied, "Not right now, but we see this as a franchise."

He added, "It just won't be at launch."

Developed by Sims creator Will Wright, Spore sees you evolving a single celled organism into a complex creature and eventually an entire civilisation. The game will debut next spring, and a preview of the PC version is now on Eurogamer.

I wouldn't get too excited as much as the game could easily get a port of the PC version to Xbox 360 and PS3 it sounds like there's going to be a specific console version ala The Sims.

Hope I'm wrong though.

Wuh? A version for high-end state-of-the-art gaming hardware... and one for low-end handheld - but nothing for the latest-gen mass-market consoles in the middle. Bizarre...

Still, I hope the DS vesion is worth playing. Maybe it's Spore the platform game. Or Pokespore.

Bah, I wish they'd get a move on. Wasn't this being developed for the 360 in tandem with the PC version a while back? Stupid really - the companies KNOW this kind of game will appeal to console gamers from the outset (look at Viva Pinata, various iterations of Theme Park etc etc.) So long to wait!

problem would be if it has the processing power to cope ..

Depends how power intensive it is i guess.

Personally i look at it.. im impressed by the tech, but dont see anything close to being a fun game.

Game looked very interesting three years ago, and the concept is great, but now it just seems it'll end up like a watered down "Sims meets Civ"
