Gamble on fights in Smash Bros.

In new Spectator mode.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is set to include a new Spectator mode that allows you to watch random matches over the Internet and gamble on the results.

Unveiled on the official Smash Bros. DOJO!! website, Spectator mode does much as it says - although, this being Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, no player data is actually shared, so you can't groom anyone. Aw.

Surely the best bit though is that when you get into your random match, you can bet coins on the character you think will win before it kicks off. Which is just wicked.

Spectator mode joins an ever-growing list of cool little bonuses announced for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which already has a star-GET-studded character line-up and a PictoChat-themed level.

If it's anywhere near as good as the GameCube one, we're all in for a treat when it's released early next year.

This just gets better, the amount features on this game is incredible!

If you don't know anything about the players, how are you supposed to know who to bet on? Just by the character they picked?

Still, seems like it would be a piece of piss to implement, so why not?

You'd hope the game provides some kind of odds and form.

    I want. Now.

I'll just bet all my hard earned coins on Snake :D

ESRB'll probably make this game 18+ now... "Contains Gambling"

Gamble with what? Unless there is some kind of reward, it's like poker without money.

    Poker without money?

No, you use the coins to buy trophies you nobhead.

    Never plated Smash Bros, GOD!

No doubt you will spend coins ingame to unlock things and this is way to get more of them quickly if you're shit at the game (like me).

Yes, you use ingame currency. Also, the more players there are, the more money is to be made (more money to earn on a 4 player game vs. a 2 player game, I think). You have an option to let others view your battles, and some will then be uploaded to Nintendo for others to watch and bet on.

It'd be nice if you could spectate on friend's matches somehow (say there's 6 of you and you're playing round-robin over the net or something.) But with the amount of awesome and random stuff they've put in this game so far, I wouldn't be surprised if that came later.

    More modes!

I was thinking...They could put up a spectator channel on the Wii...Randomly seeing other people play games...Could interest some...

I hope the Wii console and corresponding net infrastructure is up to the job when these proper web enabled games start coming along. Currently browsing the simpliest Wii channels can be painful, not to mention connection drop-out.

At least in my experience (perhaps it's just me).

For a minute there I thought Nintendo were going all controversial on us and let us gamble with VC points!

It's still the same. It was a serious pose as I couldn't see it in the article. I could lower myself to your level of communication but I suppose it's better to just press ignore. Fortunately, people with with a higher understanding of manners than you actually bothered to explain it properly.

peterfll: I used Nintendo WFC to play Mario Strikers Charged online all the time... I've had some "lagsperiences" but in general it's *much* more reliable than the channel-browsing thing, which I agree with you can often be frustrating (especially the store).

I'd say 9/10 of my online MSC matches are at local speeds.

Really looking forward to this game btw, bring it onnnnn

Has there been any word on cross border play?

I'll most likely be buying the US version of this for a US Wii.

Is it just me, or are there certain phrases which should not be used to get a cheap laugh? Especially for a videogame review?
