Frontlines to support 50 players News

PC Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

18 February, 2008

THQ and Kaos Studios' upcoming Frontlines: Fuel of War will support over 50 players online when it's released on PC and 360 this month.

Kaos folks confirmed the news on the dev's forum. "We actually hit 73 during testing but we are taking baby steps as this is a pretty big leap," one of the staffers noted.

Frontlines multiplayer features a "unique role and load-out system allowing players to customise their character to suit any situation", in the words of its publisher.

There's already a 32-player Xbox Live demo available with two maps to play through to help you get your head around that.

Sadly though PS3 owners won't be able to join in with this one, after THQ decided to cancel that version.

Frontlines is a near-future first-person shooter inspired by the idea that the world would probably go a bit bat-s*** if we ran out of oil.

The developer, Kaos, was formed out of the ashes of Trauma Studios, the folks who handled Battlefield 1942's Desert Combat mod and eventually became part of that game's developer, DICE, before it all blew up.

So Frontlines has some serious potential and a solid team behind it. Watch out for our review in the lead-up to the 29th February release on PC and 360 to see whether it capitalises on that.

if only they had used the 360 party system this game could have been great, instead you have the pain of inviting friends and them not being on your team and so on - ftl :-(

I was very pleasantly surprised by the demo of this - slick and playable. I bet the single player campaign is awful, though.

Meh. Don't really see the point. 19 player COD4 is already a hassle in terms of teamwork. 8 to 16 p preferbly for me. The demo was a bit p00 anyway.

EDIT: SP demo. haven't touched the MP demo, is it better?

MP is far better, like a Battlefield game that DICE havent fooked up... Well worth a try.

I am getting quite a bit of lag when I try the demo - even on the full green bar servers, I get none (little) on COD4 in the same session? Anyone else, or is it just me :(

The Kaos EU servers are the better ones lag wise.

@Xerx3s
This game handles larger numbers of players by having bigger levels and implementing a nice squad system.

The MP is improved a lot over the SP. It is still a little rough round the edges though - which detracts from what looks to be a good game idea with a lot of detail and work put into it.

I'm enjoying this demo but I'm assuming the full version will have a party system? Won't it??

I seem to recall the PS3 cancellation response for this game was "Meh" and going as low as "Eh?"

I think I can safely ignore it on 360 too.

I really didn't like th PC demo. The maps were very linear because of the "push" system, which means that you nearly always get shot as soon as you spawn from an enemy that's camped in far away. The reason BF2 works is because the maps are open-ended enough to allow for multiple strategies and dynamic combat. I'll pass on this.

I might have to re-download the demo off Live and check out the MP. I played the crap SP and deleted it!

The multi-player demo is well better than the single player and is alot of fun. They have done alot to the weapon aiming and how your character controls.
