Free prizes for MGO newcomers

Konami runs Rookie Campaign.

Konami has unleashed a Rookie Campaign for Metal Gear Online, which rewards newcomers with thousands of in-game points to spend on crocodile hats, afro hairdos and camouflage suits.

Only those who have never registered or installed the PS3 multiplayer shooter will be eligible for the 5000 point giveaway, and the offer closes on 16th February, according to the official website.

That, as we've told you before, is the same day the free MGO demo disappears from the PlayStation Network, having been available since Christmas Eve.

The sampler offers up three maps - Blood Bath, Gronznyi Grad and Midtown Maelstrom - and several modes to play them on. Up to 16 people can play online, and creative types can even customise characters.

Head over to our Metal Gear Online gamepage for our thoughts plus plenty of screenshots and videos.

I gave up on this before I even started due to enormous patches, never being able to connect etc.

Sorry Konami but nothing will tempt me back now.

I love the game. I do not love the stupid sign-up, retarded way you have to buy DLC from them. Say what you like about Microsoft, they'd not have let that shit happen. Sure, it'd have been in the interest of getting themselves money, but if that gets me access to maps straight from the same service I get the rest of my DLC, so be it.

I hope this is an indication of the failure of MGO thanks to the Konami online system.... also I would hope this might prompt them to patch it to work via bog standard PSN login.

I absolutly love metal gear 4... it was one of my favourite games of last year.

But I have no love for the online version. Complete waste of time I am afraid :(

It's a shame that they couldn't hold off on their draconian micropayment rubbish enough to allow the actual "get-connected-and-play-a-game" aspect to be as hassle free as MG Portable Ops turned out on the PSP.

Make MGO a downloadable PSN title and remove the Konami logins etc. and you might tempt me back. Currently it's just too much of a pain to get online.

Good luck in getting your free stuff. I'd imagine the log ons and failures will scare most people off.

This game is an absolute broken joke. Aside from the fact they will never see cash because of the online system I popped it in the machine over the weekend for a "quick" play. Half an hour of installing an update later I still hadn't got to start it.

I was keeping MGS4 for MGO but now I think it's trade-in bait for sure after this weekend. Shame because if they had done properly I would have been more than happy to spend with them.

I don't have a problem with MGO. It provides more fun for me than COD4 and probably Bad Company (due to EA's laggy servers). It has improved a lot with the last couple of patches.

The download of patches don't bother me because I update the game when I'm not using the PS3. I leave it on downloading whilst I'm playing Counter-Strike: Source, UT2004 or watching something on the PC. I also find the http method much faster than the P2P option.

This is why you see me ranting about network services on Sony's consoles.

This should be their/ Konami's flagship AAA game - pathetic.

I spent countless HOURS in 2004 just trying to get Burnout 3 online on the PS2. It was a complete joke. The PSP remained without a decent online service, and here we are in 2009 with the same nonsense on Sony platforms, due to each developer having to reinvent the fucking wheel for every single game.

Now they're trying to do all they can to entice new players to make their investment in server uptime, bandwidth, etc, worthwhile. The experience - just in getting connected and updated, however, is appalling enough that no-one's bothered being arsed.

This is why I don't mind paying £28.99 for 13 months of Xbox live.

    QUALITY OF SERVICE.
