Free MMO Runes of Magic launches

Over half a million were in beta.

German publisher Frogster has officially launched its free-to-play fantasy MMO, Runes of Magic. You can register for an account and download the game at the Runes of Magic website.

The game's been in open beta since December, during which time it's amassed an impressive half a million players.

Although developed in Taiwan, unlike most free MMOs Runes of Magic takes its cues directly from World of Warcraft and the EverQuest games, serving up a traditional high-fantasy world and plenty of questing to get you through the levels.

We think it's one of the more interesting prospects in free-to-play gaming. Check out our early impressions of the closed beta, and watch out for a review very soon.

Did you say free? There is always a cost! Time, your soul, life... ALWAYS!

It is quite good f2p MMO, doesn't bored me as much as some other do. It is streamlined and easy to play.

They sell you [insert item type here cause I can't remember] as a virtual currency.

Still, t'was a good mmorpg bar the lag. Might give it another go.

Edit: Oh yeah ' Runes', so if you're unwilling to pay, then should be Nothing of Magic.

Whilst an interesting play on words, there, the actual virtual currency you buy are Diamonds; they do make a pretty good job of making sure the things you can buy are extras, rather than necessities, though. To be honest, I've probably spent more money on it, since mid-December when the open beta launched, than I would have if subscribing to something like WoW; the difference being, I've spent my money when and where I wanted to, rather than having to.

Admittedly, I've not tried WoW, but of the free/fixed MMO's I've tried it's the only one I've ever played regularly past a couple of weeks.

Why not just buy everything you need, press the red IWIN button and then proceed to uninstall the game? Saves you a lot of time at least.
