Free demo of new Ace Attorney game

Right here, right now.

Look! Down there! See that? That's a free flash-based trial version of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, that is! Why not give it a go?

As reported previously Apollo Justice is a sequel to the Phoenix Wright games - except it doesn't actually star Phoenix Wright. It's out in the US on 12th February, but a European release date has yet to be confirmed.

Here's the type of thing you'll be dealing with, anyway.

Good God, Phoenix Wright.. Playable on my Eurogamer SingleScreen? This is a genius idea, major kudos to Capcom and all involved :D!

    Wow it's ace :D
  • HyperShadow #4 4 years ago

Does Eurogamer just copy from Kotaku? It seems like a couple of hours after a feature or new item is posted there, it appears on this site O_o
  • haowan #5 4 years ago

yes, that's probably it. unlikely that the flash could have been sent to lots of different online publications by the publisher.

Wow, EG's front page is useful, for once!

    Oh, and Kristoph is cool.

Oh, and would it have killed them to add a few more frames of animation.

"Perhaps the victim slighted the defendant's piano playing?" lols.
  • smoothpete #7 4 years ago

Argh, so tempted to play it but I think I'll wait for the game to arrive. Mad props to EG though.

Dont worry about spoilers, by trying the flash based demo this is just a introduction to the new attorney Apollo Justice and the demo only details the very beginning of the first case, up to the second testimony and nothing serious revealed. No big clues or shocks.

Only make us wondered what caused Phoenix to give up his lawyer job and take up poker.. ahem .. piano playing?

you sad twats...looking for spoilers, sorry not here!!

    Too much fucking talking.

Boring. When do I get to shoot up some lawyers?
  • Baronen #11 4 years ago

Very cool idea indeed, too bad the demo itself is really fucking boring. :/
  • NewYork #12 4 years ago

What I want to know is how Phoenix got so mellow.

I take it the full games are a shade more interesting than that?
  • gaselite #15 4 years ago

What a great idea. Can't bloody wait for this game. Finishing the third was rather sad.

Fot those asking weather the games get more interesting?
Yes, they do, that was just a tutorial.

I keep wondering. Is there like a new flash "NDS Emulator" around or something? For NDS devs only, of course. I know that it's fairly easy to make a flash game out of the Ace Attorney series but I've seen a demo of Exit - also in Flash. I have a suspicion that it'd be actually easier for developers to make some kind of emulator for the demos than to make separate flash demos for each and every game.

Maybe that's just me being silly. :-P

P.S. I've read a lot about Ace Attorney 4 and I like the new characters. I was just disappointed that things turned out for the worse for all the old characters. I had really hoped that, I don't know, Phoenix and Mya would get together or something (much to Pearl's joy =) but instead Phoenix ended up as some kind of hobo... Ergh...

Yeah, that, and the fact that some of the graphics seem to have been re-encoded to lower the size of the thing makes me think that my "NDS Flash emulator" theory is pure nonsense. =)

How close is this to the actual DS game? I'll be honest, I found wading through that very boring, but I'm assured by a lot of my games playing friends that it's a great game to get for DS.

Its in a style of old graphic text adventure, or an interactive visual novel. Where you only need to select certain icon at a certain place, making the right selection allow you to progress to the next stage.

There is health bar, make wrong choice at critical time, ie presenting wrong evidence, it go down, so you do have a few goes before its game over.

Its does sound boring, its not an action paced thriller but if you put aside any expectation for a fast thrill, usual fraggings or fast sliding round the corners. Its can be enjoyable, its all about the larger than life characters, their quirks and the attempts to reach the end of each chapter and the overarching story.

Sad at seeing the apparent lemming plummet of Phoenix from his height, but then isnt that a hook to pull you into the new story and the new main characters? Phoenix was last 28 or something and he is now 33 in Apollo Justice. So clearly a good few years passed.

I suspect that newcomers would still enjoy but those who have been with Phoneix in the past will also see glimpse of old happenings/references and familar faces. That would mean Pearl now a teen girl? So Larry could be back leering after her?!
  • Lim-Dul #25 4 years ago

Larry would be still too old for Pearl, I think. Remember that he's Wright's schoolmate. =)

Anyway - the text adventure or graphic novel comparison is very good. Basically that's all this game series is.

I have to admit that there are flaws - sometimes perfectly suitable evidence isn't accepted because you shouldn't present it at THAT particular moment in time and sometimes you wander aimlessly between several screens because you simply CAN'T know that e.g. a new conversation option appeared for some person you've already talked to.

The demo shows the first part of a tutorial case of Ace Attorney 4... God, don't judge the game by these cases. They are a CHORE. You have to go through a similar case in each and every game and each time somebody is making an idiot of him/herself in court. It's so friggin' annoying...

Later the game gets very, VERY engaging, however. So engaging, in fact, that I played through most titles in one or two days - not because they were so short but because I couldn't stop. :-D
It is also a nice brain teaser as you will experience many, many moments of enlightenment as you start putting the pieces of the puzzle together - which isn't easy but almost always logical (in the Ace Attorney universe, at least =).

It's also quite nice how all the characters have their own personalities which are really well drawn out. This might sound funny if you consider all the over-the-top sprites etc. but you will eventually realize that. Most characters are not one-dimensional either. I utterly enjoyed playing as Miles Edgeworth in AA3 because it was a totally different game experience although you basically did the same things - it was connected to the different personality of Edgeworth.

Payne's hair is still legendarily mad - I can't wait for the full version of this.
  • VMerken #30 4 years ago

    Phoenix! Teh noes...

Demo did pique interest, though. It'll be fascinating to learn what happened to Phoenix and his friends - as far as that's covered by the game.
