PC PlayStation 2 Xbox GameBoy Advance PSP DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Games Industry.biz

19 June, 2007

Microsoft's Forza Motorsport 2 continues to outpace the competition, GamesIndustry.biz is reporting, remaining at number one in the UK All Formats charts despite a 34 per cent drop in sales.

Eidos' Tomb Raider Anniversary is at number two this week, with Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End at number three - with only 183 sales separating the two games.

Forza's nearest competitor, Colin McRae: DIRT, only manages to debut at number four this week, just ahead of Nintendo's Wii Play at five.

Dr Kawashima's Brain Training continues to bother the top ten at number six, with Activision's Spider-Man 3 dropping three places this week to number seven.

The only other new entry in the top forty is Take 2's Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer which debuts at number eight, with Mario Strikers Charged Football at nine and Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 6 at ten.

Yeah and Resistance went from 40 in the full price chart to 22 thanks to the church's viral marketing LOL.

I cant stand pro evo 6, but I cant wait for the new one to come out, hopefully frame rate problems, and lack of features no longer and issue.

Well, Shadowrun remains in the shadows then?

Publishers should plan the're releases more carefully. DIRT could have done a lot better if it wasn't going up against Forza. In the last few months we're going to have slaugters of all the games going against each other. With GTA and NFS probaby dominating everything.

I would plan my releases in the first half of the year. Shit coming out and people are still as bored the whole year through. (just look at Lost Planet)

A deserved No.1. Forza2 is really amazing! Looks stunning in HD and plays beautifully. The racing line option is genius.

Just wanted to share.

Glad Forza is still on top, but whose bright idea was it to release Forza, DiRT and FlatOut in as many weeks?! IDIOTS!

MS probably released Forza now, so that it wasn't going up against PGR4 in the Autumn. Portfolio management happening there. However, to release Dirt near to Forza is just a bit stupid.

Yeah get over it andromeda or is that Ad?

It is entirely Codies fault for putting it up agaisnt Forza 2 , if it had been released in a couple of months it would have easily been a No.1. Poor timing, poor judgment but a great game, feel sorry for the team who obviously put so much work into the game.

Anyway back to Maple raceway.

It's nice to see Forza Motorsport 2 selling well and it does deserve the number one spot. DiRT is also a fantastic game but might have fared better had it been delayed a month, which would have allowed the developers to polish up the very pretty graphics engine a bit more, i.e. reduce the v-sync tearing and minimise the few framerate issues. I believe July and August are a bit scant for new releases so it would have been better had these games been spread out a bit more instead of releasing them all in June!

Talking of release schedule nightmares, it seems that in the middle of the typical barren summer release lineup in August that Bioshock and Mass Effect are coming out on the same Friday.

That's what I meant. Overlord vs the Darkness. Bioshock vs Mass Effect, etc. Why the hell not release it when youy know you've got no competition. When it's in stores 2 weeks it's old, when people walk in 2 weeks after they bought Mass effect and see it as a new game, people will buy.

I wouldn't set up an icecreamstand right next to another one, why the hell do publishers do that.

There's probably about 20 games coming out sept-oct time that i would be interested in. I will probably buy 3, and wait for the other to go cheap, or rent them. Why do publishers do this - doesn't it increase the risk in a risky market?

Forza 2 is superb, more so with a wheel which I had as a Father's day present (yes, there are gamers THAT old around...!)

Both Forza 2 and DiRT have compromises in terms of graphics versus framerate, and having played each demo I plummed for Forza first as I preferred the smoothness - you can stick all your fancy graphical effects up your exhaust Colin!

But that's not to say I won't be visiting DiRT once I've beaten Mr Rossi....

@Hypnopedia - I would highly recommend Dirt as a compliment to Forza. They are both excellent games.

Regarding similar releases:

Hollywood does this often; http://www.cracked.com/index.php?name=Ne...

As with a lot of things lately, game executives are cribbing more and more from the movie industry. I assume a "survey" was/has been done that "proves" that releasing films of similar genres close together increases the sales of that film. Something to do with the public only accepting a finite amount of concepts at any one time perhaps.

I really don't think that works with games; personally, after playing one genre of game for a while, I want a new genre to play - Dirt > Crackdown. Work into that my personal problems with swapping from one driving game handling / shooting game aiming to another straight away and contrasting genres really do pay off :)
