First UT3 PS3 user content News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

21 December, 2007

Although the tools to let people prepare their own PS3-compatible mods and maps are waiting on "some paperwork from Sony", Epic's Mark Rein has announced the very first downloadable user-created content for Unreal Tournament III on PlayStation 3. You can find download links in his forum post.

"We're starting with a user-created map called DM-Shrine created by Thomas Browett, who goes by the name Setheran on the official UT3 forums. Thomas is a 23 year old graphic designer from Nottingham, England. He's been playing Unreal since the very first Unreal Tournament and he says he's enjoyed every game in the series. He made a few maps for the original Unreal Tournament but hadn't done anything since this one. He finds the third generation Unreal Editor to be very friendly and feature rich.

"DM-Shrine is is a great little map that's perfect those close-quarters, 2-6 player, matches that keep your adrenaline pumping from beginning to end. A lot of our DM maps in UT3 are designed for larger player counts so this provides a great contrast and a chance to play in a more intimate setting. I've always loved these types of maps and I hope you folks do as well!"

Making it go is pretty easy. Unzip the file to the root of a PS3-compatible memory card, preserving the directory structure; go to UT3's Community menu; click My Content; press square to Import Mod; follow the directions on-screen. "Once imported you'll be able to see the map in your list of Deathmatch maps," says Rein. "You'll be able to host the map and join servers that are hosting the map. All UT3 mods install this same way. If this were a mutator it would show up in the mutator list. If it were a gametype it would show up in gametype lists, etc."

"Epic didn't make this map. Thomas did and he already released it for PC users of UT3. We didn't do any editing or changes to it. All we did was bring it into the editor and "cook" it into the proper format for the PlayStation 3 and tested it to make sure it ran properly and was good fun. We're waiting on some paperwork from Sony that will allow us to release an editor update so mod creators can do this cook process for themselves. We expect to have that very soon."

Woo! Watch out for our take on Unreal Tournament III for the PS3 in the very near future.

Cool. MS promised this stuff years ago and Forza's the only thing that's even had a stab at it.

Got this excellent PS3 game yesterday so this new map is very nicely timed!!! Mind you the game already comes with 39 unique maps, more if you include variations, and although I spent all last night playing the game, I think I only saw about 10 at most. Found the classic Deck from the original UT but Deimos is my favourite, set on a huge space station orbiting the Earth. Considering how good many of the user-made maps were for UT and UT2003/04, there's not going to be a shortage of maps that's for sure. And these are presumably ALL going to be free, right? :)

This is something of a watershed for consoles. Great news for console gamers, let's just hope other developers pick this up and run with it :)

Nothing about what a pain it is to load on to the PS3 though? ie downloading onto a pc - put on memory stick - put stick into ps3 - upload to ps3 - then play

Any comments from the guys that bought it on the game itself, positive or negative?

I put more into feedback from users than mag reviews so it would help influence my decision to get this or not.

Cheers

Nice.

Will they be issuing a fix for the bots that run on the spot, the textures that draw themselves in after the map has loaded and the slowdown issues anytime soon as well? And to think of all those glowing previews I read that said it ran as smooth as...

Grrr.

@Zomoniac - Halo 3 has tons of user generated content, so Forza isn't the only one at all.

MS need to get this sorted though because it's a superb feature - although you usually have to wade through tons of crap to find the good ones.

Its a good game; suffers a bit from odd bugs and texture issues but still fun. Can't see me playing it as much as I used to play UT/UT2003/2004 though as it feels like it is missing something. Hope that Epic can get some patches out soon to fix that though. Really put out over the custom maps though; thought they would be a little easier to get

What pain?... to copy a file to a memory stick and import it into the game?

Can't really see it's a problem... at all.

Yeah a USB key works fine. The problem is more the effort involved as the PS3 has a browser in it and can download other files fine so why not UT3 mods. And it is a problem for people without a pc as why should you need anything other than the PS3 itself to play a PS3 game? Its like saying you can have mods on a pc game but you need a PS3 controller to play them

You don't ... you only need a PC or Mac to download and play free/unofficial mods/maps.

The upside is that Epic or Sony does not have any control of the mods and maps = more freedom for the modders ;)

I'll bet that the official maps will be downloadable directly from the game or the PS Store in the future.

"The upside is that Epic or Sony does not have any control of the mods and maps = more freedom for the modders ;) " This isn't true; the maps have to be certified by Sony/Epic before they are changed into the format the PS3 version can use. Although the map isn't changed the file is different. The certification process is to stop risque maps/mods making it onto the PS3.

True.. right now.

But if you read what Epic are saying about this, you'll see that's only for now... they are working on opening this up so modders can "sign" their own maps without Sony and Epic.

Exactly, this could also result in some interesting stuff that was simply not possible on (non-modded) consoles up until now. Star Wars and Alien mods/maps/skins anyone?

I don't really care for UT or for Epic or for Mark Rein or for PS3 or really for Sony, but I can't deny this feature sounds really great. It's a shame you have to transfer the content via USB, but that's just a minor irritation. Kudos to all involved.

IE was based on Mosaic, so just another rebranded product.

This content editing is great news for the PS3 owners - if people start demanding
all games to support this, developers will, and it can only be good for the platform.
Maybe I'll even buy a PS3 within the next two years if some exclusive games do this :)

No actually, there were a few anti-MS/360 comments that preceded Verwandlung's statement which were rather 'negative' in nature. Oh but wait, you're a blinkered fanboy so of course you wouldn't have noticed...Silly me..

That was an extremely mature response but I'm afraid I have no time to suck cock at the moment as I've just dug up your dead grandmother and I'm going to skull fuck the rancid slut until her putrid eyeballs pop right out of her head, then I'm going to stick em up her maggot infested anus so she can see where the sun don't shine.
