First Split/Second DLC detailed

"Hyper" cars add "instant advantage".

Update: Split/Second game director Nick Baynes has verified the DLC to Eurogamer and explained that the additional cars will offer no "unfair advantage".

UK retailer Play has revealed the contents of the first batch of Split/Second downloadable content.

It's supposedly called the Hyper Car Pack and contains three "super-high performance" motors. There are "among the most powerful" in the game and offer drivers an "instant advantage" when picked.

Play knows this because pre-ordering at the retailer is rewarded with a free code for the DLC.

We're waiting to hear back from Disney about whether the information is correct.

Split/Second: Velocity is due out on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on 21st May. Which version will be best? Check our Digital Foundry demo comparison article and video to find out.

Look out for our impressions of Split/Second multiplayer later this week.

It is a competition. And Digital Foundry is the judge.

"and offer drivers an "instant advantage""

I'm not sure that's going to go down well online with people who don't get the DLC, assuming it isn't free...

So either Play have got the wrong end of the stick or those willing to pay for DLC will be handed the competitive advantage in multiplayer and the rest are left with a unbalanced game.

Black Rock seem quite switched on so I'd be surprised if it was the latter and they were prepared top break their multiplayer for the sake of some DLC.

If its true I might be picking up Blur instead.

As someone who is looking forward to the game, I have to agree with Mark. If I am at a disadvantage for not pre ordering from a certain retailer, then that would really hinder my online enjoyment. That is of course, if it has a price point of anything more than 1p.

If the DLC gives you a unfair advantage whether you have to pay get it for free via Play, and the DLC cars are not kept for seperate races, Blackrock have unbelievably managed to break the online multiplayer before the game is even released.

Nice to start with a level playing field online... :o/

I hope that's not true, because I thought Black Rock weren't that dumb.

I wonder if it's like the "bonus" abilities for preorders of Bad Company 2, which just let you access a few of the perks without having to level up first. But buying your way to victory is a tragic indicator of the sorry state of the games industry.

But buying your way to victory is a tragic indicator of the sorry state of the games industry.

Actually it's an indicator of the healthy state of the games industry :p

    But it's bullshit, I agree.

    @ignatius: yeah, moral state ;)

EDIT: Someone obviously thinks it's not at all objectionable, and is downvoting everyone who does. For shame.

It sounds like these are no better than the cars you unlock at the end of the game, the DLC just lets you get them much sooner. Pretty scabby tactic but it doesn't sound game-wrecking depending on how the top cars are unlocked otherwise. In some ways it may be preferable without the DLC.

10six all over again. Congrats, Black Rock.

Play will obviously make them sound godly in order to increase their sales. I say wait for more infomation, I have a couple of interpretations from this.
