I'm confused. I came in expecting Max payne 3 screenshots and all I got was a fat bloke running about in a rainforest!

I know it's early days but wow, what a dissapointment visually. Where the subways, and the snow, and the dark, dramatic fights through flats of new york? Boo. :(
  • OllyJ #2 3 years ago

I like it, looks diffeent. Hopefully it'll have the same fun Gameplay. Nothing quite like a slo mo sideways dive, lining that dot on the forehead and pulling the trigger. Sweet.
  • Bealsy #3 3 years ago

gotta love being a fat beardy guy with guns. Hows that for random screen shottage. WIN!

That doesn't look like uncharted at all... I MEAN MAX PAYNE... MAX PAYNE!!!!

Seriously though, it looks like it will retain the mechanics and little else from Max Payne (and 2). Which is a shame, cause I liked the story, atmosphere and setting of Max Payne, perhaps more so then the admittedly very good gameplay mechanics.

To be fair though Lukeh, it would have been a bit dull to drudge around the streets of NYC and the interior of warehouses or subways and so on again.

At least these will be warehouses in a tropical country, with palm trees and the like.
  • gaselite #7 3 years ago

I love Max Payne but I don't think I'm down with this new setting and interpretation of the character.

It also looks from the screenshots (admittedly limited grounds to suggest something like this) like it might take itself just a bit too seriously. I really hope that doesn't happen to this series, which was always pulpy and fun. Conversely though, I hope they don't try and be too overtly humourous with proceedings.

Interested to see where this will go but not as excited as I was after the announcement.

    RIP Max Payne 2001 - 2003
  • b00n #9 3 years ago

Screens look good enough, but why totally drop the unique setting and character of the games? That was what made the games stood out, next to the then-new bullet time. Really hope the atmosphere, story, voice-work, setting etc is more in line with the original game than the looks of the guy. And also hope the developers use their imagination to come up with a few original levels like the dream-sequences.
  • ChthonicEcho #10 3 years ago

When will this tropical trend come to an end?

Max Payne was always associated with neo noir. It was the heart of the franchise. Now we're in the brightly coloured Sao Paulo, a city that actually looks nothing like the fucking Cidade de Deus seen in these screenshots.

I'm sure it'll be a good game. It's Rockstar. But it's about as Max Payne as Far Cry 2 was Far Cry.

They're all CMYK images. Eurogamer, you need to convert them all to RGB as the internet doesn't use ink.

Simply put, in NYC there's just not enough lush foliage to show off their new lush foliage technology. ;)

I quite like the idea of a sun holiday with Max Payne, so long as I can still dive sideways and blow two sets of nuts off before sliding to a halt behind some (conveniently placed) boxes, barrels whatever I'll be happy. :)

Have to reinstall Max Payne tonight now.

Maybe that's a little harsh based on a couple of screenies, it'll hopefully have the same comic-book storytelling style as the first two.

    If it doesn't I'll cry.
  • dllord #17 3 years ago

Where have the pics gone you bunch of mullets?
  • photoboy #18 3 years ago

Tell you what Rockstar, put Max's hair back on top of his head where it belongs and re-hire James McCaffrey for the voice and I'll buy it. The pain killer addiction and beer gut can stay if you like.

I do actually get a bit of a Max Payne vibe from these screenshots, even though the environments are unfamiliar. If they can just make Max Payne look like Max Payne again I think they could be onto something... unless this is one of those games where the lead designer is so precious with his brainchild he won't consider changing anything despite it being a good idea.

This looks like a poor man's Uncharted 2 or Just Cause 2 minus most of the fun.
  • peak_performance #20 3 years ago

Can't imagine the Max Payne theme over those shots. And the graphics have taken a turn to the nextgen filters, there's so much post processing on these shots it's hard to see the texture quality. The first two games had very natural graphics...

They should not have named this Max Payne but something completely else. Then they wouldn't have to stand up to a highly regarded series name.
  • UncleLou #21 3 years ago

Far Cry 1+2, Crysis, Uncharted, Just Cause, Mercenaries, Boiling Point, Kane & Lynch, the upcoming Lost Planet 2 - it's getting a bit much with palm trees and bright sunlight lately. Wouldn't mind playing the odd game taking place in more Northern landscapes.
  • glaeken #22 3 years ago

Indeed I demand they bring back brown games. This sudden craze for the tropics is madness. Why the hell should I have to look at so many colours when brown has served me so well up until now.
  • Kyle #23 3 years ago

It looks nice and all, but one of the main points of Max Payne was that it was noir. NOIR, I say! They should have just made a new IP.
  • peak_performance #24 3 years ago

Eh, glaeken, this is just brown with brown colours. Good job at missing the point completely.
  • makeamazing #25 3 years ago

I have to admit I am not currently liking what they are doing to Max Payne... changing his look, voice, the settings... I mean if I want a game in a forest setting I could just play Farcry or Just Cause...

It seems at the moment all of the things that made MP great have been removed and its just a game called MP without the style/feel of it.. I hope I am wrong but we shall see.
  • Shrike #26 3 years ago

Wow. Way to take something with a (fairly) distinctive style and make it indistinguishable from half a dozen other games. I was worried that the new game would just be capitalising on the movie, but it doesn't even seem to belong to the same franchise.
  • ChthonicEcho #27 3 years ago

"This looks like a poor man's Uncharted 2 or Just Cause 2 minus most of the fun."

What an utterly moronic statement; how can you possibly say this from half a dozen screens and - if I'm not mistaken - no footage to go on yet.

I think everyone's overreacting a little. It's Rockstar after all - y'know; the most consistent developer/publisher in the business. I'll be very surprised if this game isn't very good, even if it deviates a little from the template of the previous games.
  • Harmonica #33 3 years ago

Found them on the Shack anyway. Looks like a fat Sam Fisher and completely par for the course this generation.

    Not impressed.

Alan Wake is the new Max Payne anyway..
  • Nithron #34 3 years ago

There's only so many settings, people, that eventually they will all be overused.

Jungles all look nearly the same, cities all look nearly the same, deserts look exactly the same. You could use Antarctica, but even that's been done a couple of times.
  • UncleLou #35 3 years ago

Indeed I demand they bring back brown games. This sudden craze for the tropics is madness. Why the hell should I have to look at so many colours when brown has served me so well up until now.

I don't think colours are an achievement per se. I am neither getting bored of black and white films, nor of Rembrandt paintings. I don't think Apocalypse Now or First Blood would be better films if they had more colours, nor is Warhol a better painter than Goya, just because he's more colourful. ;)
  • jaguarwong #36 3 years ago

Yeah I agree with so many above - I want exactly the same game I've played before.

Adding new ideas to a series is the worst thing a talented development team should do...

    ...oh wait.
  • UncleLou #37 3 years ago

No, but "new ideas" and replacing a pretty distinctive setting with the latest generic setting of choice isn't the same thing, is it.
  • FWB #38 3 years ago

Time has not been kind to Max. In fact I'd go as far to say that it's raped him... repeatedly.
  • [TR] #39 3 years ago

I bet they're just setting it up for Bruce Willis to play Max Payne in the next movie.

And these screenshots could be for any game other than Max Payne 3. It distinctly looks nothing like the other two games.

  • SEVQA #43 3 years ago

I think I can agree with what the majority are saying here! WHERE THE HELL IS MAX PAYNE!!! this looks nothing like what we have come to love and seems like a completely different game!
  • crabdamage #44 3 years ago

Ironically the movie was more faithful to the source material than this 'sequel' is looking.
  • Spekingur #45 3 years ago

Of course the setting is in the tropicals! Every employer in a developer team dreams of staying where there are palm trees, sunny, good drinks and pretty people.

This is supposed to be in Brazil, right? In some city. Possibly what is considered slums by other western nations. Apparently there's alot of those in Brazilian cities according to the same western nations. Which is a bit silly since, according to these nations, Africa is bad for your health and sending stuff to the upper atmosphere costs alot of money. Neither is true.
  • sneetch #46 3 years ago

    @UncleLou
No, but "new ideas" and replacing a pretty distinctive setting with the latest generic setting of choice isn't the same thing, is it.

Are there all that many games set in Sao Paulo? ;)

The game is still set in a city just not New York or some other, standard-issue US city, there may be palm trees in the background rather than just street lamps but you're not all that likely to be spending your time jungle fighting. I think people are reading far too much into the game and its perceived direction from just 6 screenies.

Max should have washed his vest and shaved though. He knew there'd be photos.
  • BadBoyBonner #47 3 years ago

    Triggerhappytel

Erm, you even copied my sentence - first 3 words give it away "This looks like" - how else are you meant to tell what something looks like other than by looking at it? The images display no USP for this game in a highly competitive genre.

It seems your comment is more akin to something so senseless as to be laughable - not mine.

It's a huge change in art direction (from previous games) that's moving in a direction that seems like it will be overloaded in Cuban-a-like's

Just Cause 2 and Uncharted 2 look like great fun - I have yet to see anything from this that looks anything other than generic.

Stills showing base jumping, parachuting, climbing and discovery, physics fun tethering etc. seem fun, these seem very me too.

What you are implying? That Remedy thought they would purposefully release the worst generic shot's possible of their new game ensuring it is derided by core gamers?

Show me something great and I will say it looks great, show me something that looks generic and I will say it looks generic - this is looking generic judging from the released material - which one would assume are some of the best shots currently available rather than purposefully trying to look generic..
  • Artemus #48 3 years ago

    ^ Remedy aren't making this.
  • Triggerhappytel #49 3 years ago

    @BadBoyBonner

And yet, how can tell this looks like less fun than any other TPS when you haven't seen any footage or played it?! A few still images is no place to ploclaim that this is seemingly better or worse than any other example in the genre.

"Just Cause 2 and Uncharted 2 look like great fun - I have yet to see anything from this that looks anything other than generic."

But-there's-only-six-fucking-screenshots! Maybe part of the game will be set in Sao Paulo, maybe it will have interesting ideas to stand out from the rest of the market, maybe it will be a good, solid TPS but nothing amazingly original. How can you possibly make judgments on how entertaining the game is, knowing so little about it...?!

I'm all for change (I'm apparently one of the few that liked the splinter cell change before they wussed out and what back to the drawing board), but they've clearly lost the NOIR in this. You really can't have that neo-noir setting with colours and sunshine and samba music in the background.
The game could've still been set in new york (or any other city, chicago perhaps?) but, like this version, could've gone for a open-world setting.

  • curtlikesmeat #56 3 years ago

    Well....

Maybe towards the end of the game he'll discover the conspiracy leads back to NY, he'll put on a leather jacket and go back to the NY winter. You never know
  • BabyJesus #57 3 years ago

Great another game that seems to be set in Africa. Seems like Africa is the new New York when it comes to games these days..
  • Harmonica #58 3 years ago

'You can't have noir with neo-noir technicolour' isn't entirely true, though. It's not about whether it's drawn in black and white and grey, it's about the murkiness of the subject matter.

But having said that it would take one hell of a developer to manage to pull of a bright and breezy colour palette and draw a contrast with the dark manoeuvrings of the plot. Think of Blade Runner, essentially.
  • Spekingur #59 3 years ago

@BabyJesus: Since when did South America become the new Africa?
  • smelly #60 3 years ago

  • YourMessageHere #62 3 years ago

Can't say I understand why the ambient attitude is so conservative about this. Generally speaking, change is GOOD, on top of it being inevitable and necessary. What matters is gameplay. It's not as if it's actually ugly, and I'm all for more credible protagonists.

what made max payne 1 and 2 so greate was just as much the setting and atmosphere as it was the gameplay. the allways dark snowy new york, dark and gritty, film noir. This is just some jungle shotter with the name max payne tagged on it. the game might be good but imo judging from these screens it doesnt desverve the name Max payne.
  • Shrike #64 3 years ago

I think it's misleading to say that people are being 'conservative' about this. I'm all for change and development. But look at it this way: what were the two stand out things about Max Payne? The storytelling and art style (the comic book panels, the lovably overwritten narration, the music and atmosphere) and bullet time. Every game has bullet time now, so they should (I would think) really have to push what made the originals a success in terms of aesthetic. I'm not saying they can't tell a good noir story in Brazil, but it's a visual U-turn for the series which makes me question why they wouldn't just make a new franchise.

It'd be a bit like if the developers of Bioshock felt like having slottable 'magic' powers was the USP of Bioshock and made a sequel set in modern-day NYC without the art-deco aesthetic or water.
  • HarryPalmer #65 3 years ago

I Liked the seedy, nasty, foreboding New York setting tbh. And the jacket. It doesn't look like Max Payne.
  • sneetch #66 3 years ago

As you apparently have not realised that the screenshots are actually of a city and not of the jungle I don't think you should be judging anything from these screens.

Looking beyond the fact that there are more than 5 different colours shown IMO declaring that it's not Max Payne because they've changed the setting is ridiculous, what made Max Payne for me was the narrative and the "comic strip" over-the-top storytelling more than anything else. They were great games but New York was just a backdrop if the second game was set elsewhere it'd be as good.

Just to recap: having a palm tree does not make it a jungle (if it did then my office is a jungle) and you can tell a dark story in a dark fashion in a sunny place: in the Maltese Falcon Humphrey Bogart goes to Istanbul (and if sunshine is good enough for Humphrey it's good enough for you :P) also the entirety of LA Confidential is set in, well, LA not exactly renowned for its snow.

Have some faith. The first two were great, so long as they keep the same general story style I'll be delighted. (Also, that last screenshot in the warehouse is textbook "noir".)
