First LOTRO expansion announced News

MMO PC News by Oli Welsh

14 March, 2008

Lord of the Rings Online developer Turbine unveiled the second volume of the Tolkein-licensed massively multiplayer RPG at Connect 08 in Birmingham today.

Speaking at the Codemasters Online Gaming event, executive producer Jeffrey Steefel said it will be titled The Mines of Moria and is down for a release before the end of the year. It will be the first of a series of planned yearly updates to Lord of the Rings Online.

The Mines of Moria will take high-level players out of the kingdom of Eriador and into the goblin-infested underground world, formerly a dwarven kingdom, just after the Fellowship of the Ring has passed through it in the events of the books. The Mines will be a reproduced as a single, continuous space in the game.

Players will face off against bosses famous from Tolkien lore - The Balrog and The Watcher. Steefel promised fighting the former in particular would be an "unforgettable" experience, but he didn't explain how it would fit into the official Lord of the Rings continuity.

Ten new levels will be added to the game, raising the cap from 50 to 60. In addition there will be two new classes, the Warden and the Runekeeper. Steefel refused to elaborate on these, promising more information in the coming months. They sound like a tank and caster to us but that's just a guess.

A new Legendary items system will also be introduced. This will essentially allow certain equipment - armour, weapons and shields - to develop its own advancement path alongside the player character, gaining experience, deeds and legacies, and becoming an intrinsic part of high-level players' character builds.

Other features announced include a large number of instances for groups of 3, 5, 12 and 24 players, new monster player scenarios, a new system of leaderboards and achievement rankings, dynamic lighting effects, more environment-aware AI, and a chance to join the Fellowship in Lorien, tying players even more closely into the Lord of the Rings storyline.

To promote the new expansion, Turbine has just launched a website: unlocktheminesofmoria.com. You can register there now for a chance to play though a web adventure that will unlock in-game deeds and items for your LOTRO character, as well as previewing the events of the new volume. The first web minigame, King Under the Mountain, launches on the site on March 31st.

Steefel also mentioned that LOTRO would be launched in Russia, China and Korea this year, and provided some details of the next free updates to the game - Books 13 and 14. Book 13 will feature a new region, the introduction of a hobby system with fishing, and improvements to the game's 'looking for group' interface.

Look out for further updates from Connect 08 - including more on Lord of the Rings Online and NetDevil's space combat MMO Jumpgate Evolution - in the coming days.

Smashing news, was sure it would be based in Moria, raising the level cap and new classes among other additions is all good in my book. :)

I play it; great game imo.

Hope they do something to ensure the existing raids scale to the new level cap...

Did play it, also went back to WoW. I like it, but it doesn't differentiate itself enough from WoW, and it generally feels a bit emptier and a lot more soulless, with more wandering around mostly empty places between quests. The new 'weapons-growing with you' idea sounds neat and novel though. I may give the game another shot at some point, when I inevitably tire of WoW again.

That was what drew me to it, but like you I ended up playing wow again. The open spaces just made the world seem more vast and made me want to explore, whereas the wow universe just makes me want to get from a to b as soon as possible.I also loved the 'if you can see it, you can go there' attitude to world design, no sheer drop cliffs that you can't traverse here :) For me it just lost out in combat to wow, the boss encounters in wow are pretty awesome, I felt them lacking in LOTRO. Still, hope the expansion is good, I enjoyed my time in LOTRO, but found wow just pipped it.

I can see why WoW players dislike LOTRO, it's not as instapwn in your face action as it seems for the first 10 seconds of the game, but thats why i like it it's got way more thought in the combat instead of mindless button bashing.

interesting to see if they evolve monsterplay in the game with MoM, which is LOTRO's weakest point, they attempted to with session play, which worked, then tried with book 12 but that just added an item grind.

Overall LOTRO does offer the best PVE (next to DDO) endgame, it's far more in the requirement of actaly group play, then just the 'tank and spank' thought of others, although WoW it attemping to try somthing different with TBC it still is just that, MoM will exend that epic feeling even more.

Balrog may tempt me to see what LOTRO's like. WoW was too 1-dimensional and eve just too slow for me.

Damn. Just when I was beginning to think I might actually have time to hit an MMO level cap they announce another 10 - my champs at 30 and I won't be able to play much till summer. But the game is so damn good I'll just have to get the expansion. Ah well.

I just downloaded the trial again yesterday to give it another look...I tried it at launch and was unimpressed. Turbine has kept it it though, and to their credit, the game is much more polished now. With this announced expansion and continued support, looks like LOTRO will be my next mmorpg. After 2 years, WoW suddenly became akin to eating boiled turnips for me.

Just started playing this, currently at level 15 with my elf hunter (it may not be original, but I don't care about that, I just want to have fun, and hunter class sounded more to my liking). Personally, I'm just so fucking sick of WoW, and LOTRO has got me interested in an mmorpg again. So far, I find it actually better than WoW, and mainly because it takes good things from WoW and makes it better (imo).
