First in-game MGS4 footage

On Eurogamer TV now.

The first in-game footage of Meta Gear Solid 4 PS3 is now showing on Eurogamer TV.

It gives us a glimpse of the ageing hero stealthily making his way around a Middle-Eastern province, using his new "sneaky suit" to blend into walls, disguise himself as a statue and scare the bejesus out of opposing soldiers.

Game creator Hideo Kojima demonstrated the game in front of a Tokyo audience during a celebration of Metal Gear's 20th anniversary, having promised to do so at E3 a couple of weeks ago.

He also unveiled Metal Gear Online, a multiplayer PS3 offering inspired by the success of MGS3: Subsistence on PS2. Up to 16 of you will be able to sneak around and jump out on each other, linking up with each other's futuristic nanomachines to build a digital picture of the battlefield and enemies within it.

A closed-beta of it is expected to begin on 20th August, where 3000 people will get good look at the action - although it isn't clear if this is for Japanese PS3 owners only.

Head over to our Metal Gear Online gallery for the first screenshots, and don't forget that MGS4 trailer on Eurogamer TV.

Alternatively head over to the Kojima Productions website for a look at some MGS4 in-game screenshots.

Let me be the first to say "meh".

It looks like a toned down FPS with a few gimmicks, and a disturbing amount of old man ass.
  • EmiliasHorse #2 5 years ago

Oh balls! I wanted to say Meh.
  • lennon #3 5 years ago

I usually only find the cut scenes dull but I have to say that presentation did nothing to get me remotely excited.
  • Steroyd #4 5 years ago

    YOU FREAKS OF NATURE!

Then again I like MGS, looks more improved over 3 than I thought it would be.
  • Santino #5 5 years ago

    i'll join the meh party
  • richardiox #6 5 years ago

It looks good but also less and less like the MGS I loved and more like Splinter Cell meets Ghost Recon. I think alot will depend on the variety of levels and if they are all set in such a heavily combat-orientated environment like the one Hideo showed on this demo.
  • Artemus #7 5 years ago

Are the Meh brigade 360 owners perchance?
  • LetsGo #8 5 years ago

    To be, thats a reason to pre-order a PS3.

    /me gets out credit card.
  • lennon #9 5 years ago

@Artemus - 360,PS3,Wii,PC,PSP owner here. I didnt really enjoy mgs3 all that much but I had high hopes that this one would get back on track. Some nice gimmicks such as hiding on the statue but it all looked a bit too fussy for me.
  • Negotiator #10 5 years ago

Looks crisp and clean and good animation, but apart from that it didn't look all that exciting. On a side note the AI seems very shit and not what I was expecting from the power of the cell, the oh so powerful cell.
  • Dr.Mott #11 5 years ago

Are you all crazy? That looked incredible, and I don't particularly like MGS.
  • Dizzy #12 5 years ago

As a demo of a game that cannot be done on any other hardware it failed.

As a demo of a fun game, I thought it did very well. Seemed like a lot of fun and that is what games are all about no? It actually had a nice sandbox feel to it.

PS3 fans shouldn't push this game as TEH R3AL NEXT GEN!!11 but as a good playing, slightly campy game IMHO. :)

Eh? If your talking about switching menus for camouflage like mgs3 the statue was a one off 99% percent of the time the octocam will auto switch for you.
  • Beano #14 5 years ago

"Are the Meh brigade 360 owners perchance? "

I have a sneaking (heh!) suspicion they are... MGS4 looks absolutely fantastic IMO :)

GameTrailers have a HD version of the video for people who have problems with EurogamerTV's tech :

I thought weapon switching looked a bit fiddly - nice to hear camo switch is semi-auto. Overall I liked it though. I also like the slightly comical feel the MGS series has. Doesn't take itself too seriously, remembers it is a game and benefits from it. I've gone from meh to looking forward to it now.

As for "Are the Meh brigade 360 owners perchance?" ... clicking on the names and recent forum activity is very telling.

I am a 360 owner and I stand by the Meh.
I will buy a PS3 when the time is right, I own a PS1/2 PSP and just bought the NW-A 806 MP3 so you cannot claim I am anti Sony.
  • EmiliasHorse #17 5 years ago

Looks 5 times better than GoW and the 360 version would look worse?!?

    Sod off
  • Dizzy #18 5 years ago

"I'm a 360 owner and I hope it does come to 360, looks 5 times better than gears of war and 10x more fun. "

    Classic comedy.
  • MasterGrief #19 5 years ago

No Dizzy classic comedy is the fact that GeoW is now coming to PC & MAC making the 360 essentially redundant :)
  • Steroyd #20 5 years ago

On a side note the AI seems very shit and not what I was expecting from the power of the cell, the oh so powerful cell.

This pisses me off especially the trollish kind.

Never take the AI on a public demonstration face value, NEVER the last thing the demonstrator would want is for a 15 minute demo to be stretched to an hour because he keeps getting pwned by the Ai it wouldn't make much of demonstration at all and would be very boring to watch because then the demonstrator would have to try and complete the level instead of showing all the features of the game.

People said the exact same damn thing with God of War II, Heavenly Sword and Killzone (off the top of my head), sometimes I just want to smash the internet with my bare hands.
  • Yaz #21 5 years ago

It looks good, very good in fact, just not mind blowing. It's definitely one for the MGS fans.

I'm sure if this wasn't MGS4 but a game from another dev inspired by MGS, few would be really excited by that gameplay footage. In otherwords, you wouldn't look at this gameplay footage and say "OMG, I can't wait to play this game", unless you're already a MGS fan.

And I'm still not sold on the whole camouflage idea..."Hey look at me...or not, I'm invisible, despite the fact that from where you're standing, my camouflage doesn't match the background, and there's a great big shadow underneath me".

    Yeah I know, it's only a game. :p

  • Negotiator #22 5 years ago

"Gow is crap, looks crap, plays crap".

Here come the PS3 morons, these are the people who still believe Sony's BS about the PS3's power, wake up people and open your eyes.
  • EmiliasHorse #23 5 years ago

    @Negotiator
Lavalant claims to own a 360.
  • Steroyd #24 5 years ago

And I'm still not sold on the whole camouflage idea..."Hey look at me...or not, I'm invisible, despite the fact that from where you're standing, my camouflage doesn't match the background, and there's a great big shadow underneath me".

    *ahem*
    To paraphrase someone from Neogaf.

Sam Fisher is stealthy with glow in the dark goggles. :o)
  • Nikanoru #25 5 years ago

I don't own a 360 - I'm one of the (few?) who do not own a new-gen console at all. There's still way too much good stuff on my trusty Cube and PS2 that I'm determined to play, but haven't had the chance to yet. Most of which looks significantly more exciting than MGS4.
  • Negotiator #26 5 years ago

Sam Fisher is stealthy with glow in the dark goggles.

FYI they are nightvision goggles which are used by the military so its appropriate to have it in the game. Active camo, not so much.
  • Dizzy #27 5 years ago

"No Dizzy classic comedy is the fact that GeoW is now coming to PC & MAC making the 360 essentially redundant :) "

Strange I seem to remember playing this game one year ago???

Maybe you should wait for a PS4 before buying any PS3 games.. you know you can get them cheap like that.

    >Lavalant claims to own a 360.

    Who? :)
    Edited by 1 at 25/07/07 @ 11:51
  • 01SniperWolf #28 5 years ago

Not impressesed by most of that, but I'm betting it's going to be a great game. If it's the best MGS ever I will get a PS3.
  • Yaz #29 5 years ago

"Sam Fisher is stealthy with glow in the dark goggles. :o)"

Except the real goggles don't glow in the dark like that, except perhaps to others using night vision goggles themselves. It's really just an aesthetic choice, probably there for Sam to stand out on screen even when in complete darkness, hence helping the player. Therefore I can forgive Splinter Cell on that point. :)

"As a demo of a game that cannot be done on any other hardware it failed...PS3 fans shouldn't push this game as TEH R3AL NEXT GEN!!11 but as a good playing, slightly campy game IMHO."

That could quite easily be put in a GoW thread and still be relevant, after changing PS3 to 360 of course. In fact, it could be placed in almost any so called next gen thread. In other words, it's a pointless, troll worthy comment.

A bit like this one really.

As for the game, I think it looks much improved over previous MGS titles. I got bored of them after 2, in fact during 2. Doesn't look as restricted in both environment or controls. AI looked a little too dumb/blind in places though, even for a public demo.
  • RexRunti #31 5 years ago

Actually does look quite good, and if I had a PS3/game comes to 360 (@lavalant Kojima-sama did say that there would be no problem running it on the 360) I'd get it.

That said it does look bloody gimicky: Piss about in the menu and put on a costume to make you look like a statue, then climb onto a ledge and pretend to be a statue -just crouch behind the wall ffs. Get in a barrell (after p-ing abot in the menu) and roll over some enemies - just shoot them after hiding behind the barrell that's already there. Send a stupid droid over to some enemies with there backs to you - again shoot them or you know sneak up behind them. Hit some one with an electric knife - just grab them. Look at some pretty tame but derogitary pictures - play the game.

Aside from that it looks pretty fun, but we don't know how strong the AI is as the demo was obviously scripted, and I hope we won't have to have such an intermate knowledge of what's going to happen next as the player to enjoy it.
  • Steroyd #32 5 years ago

FYI they are nightvision goggles which are used by the military so its appropriate to have it in the game. Active camo, not so much.

MGS4 is based in the future Hideo can make hyper realistic weapons if he wants to, <a href=http://www.military.com/soldiertech/ 0,14632,Soldiertech_060518_camo,,00.html>and you never know man, you never know</a>

I don't know, being able to sneak right up in front of a soldier in Splinter Cell, without him noticing you, yet when you attack he suddenly notices the floating lights what's up with that?

This has been the stigma between MGS and SC, one goes for realism, the other... doesn't even try.
  • Artemus #33 5 years ago

    @Rex.

Those 'gimmicks' are exactly what I love about MGS.
  • Dizzy #34 5 years ago

"That could quite easily be put in a GoW thread and still be relevant, after changing PS3 to 360 of course."

Probably yes... I don't think anybody ever claimed that GoW would not be do able on other hardware and, at the time, it really upped the ante in graphical detail. A level that most games now seem to have reached.
  • Gene #35 5 years ago

wtf? old man looking through some porn mags to heal himself?
also the ai is dumb, not hearing a barrel rolling behind them?
  • RexRunti #36 5 years ago

    @Artemus

It's those things which annoy me about MGS, though at least you don't have to do them, or just do them occasionly for a laugh. Unlike the bloody look on the back of the CD and break the fourth wall shinanigans of MGS1.

Also has anyone else noticed that the game doesn't look as impresive in first person mode? I think the animations and details of Snake are what make this game stand out, which is a shame because staring at his wrincley arse makes me wish I was as blind as the PFC soldiers.
  • Vin #37 5 years ago

Noxious cutscenes, check. Masturbatory writing, check. FUCKING STEALTH, check. Tortured control schemes, and an almost arbitrary emphasis on realism at times, check.

Everything I despise in modern videogaming.
  • JediMasterMalik #38 5 years ago

    Looked fucking ace to me.
  • Overlush #39 5 years ago

THANK FUCK!! They got rid of the STUPID isometric camera!!

    Can't wait for this.
  • Overlush #40 5 years ago

Aww fucking sweet, you can use FPS controls too. I swear, anyone who takes issue with this is either plain fucking jealous or needs another hobby. Fact.
  • Steroyd #41 5 years ago

@Gene He's probably put the game on very easy, sounds like European Extreme difficulty is just for you.
  • Negotiator #42 5 years ago

While you PS3 drones are waiting for this pile of crud to arrive I'll be playing the greatest game ever made, HALO 3(so good it deserves caps letters). September 25 and 26 the world will stop, humans will unite in one big love ball to hail the return of the cheif and believe that god does exist.
  • Yaz #43 5 years ago

    @Negotiator

"I'll be playing the greatest game ever made, HALO 3"

I'm soooo happy for you, no really, I'm really so happy for you.

    Anyway, getting back to MGS4....
  • reddevil93 #44 5 years ago

im hoping none of the people criticising it because its gimicky are wii owners
  • Negotiator #45 5 years ago

    @Negotiator

"I'll be playing the greatest game ever made, HALO 3"

I'm soooo happy for you, no really, I'm really so happy for you.

Why thank you my friend, I'll make sure you get to see the men in the white coats because you clearly don't know when someone is joking.
  • Yaz #46 5 years ago

"Why thank you my friend, I'll make sure you get to see the men in the white coats because you clearly don't know when someone is joking."

And you clearly don't understand sarcasm when someone replies to your 'joke'.

So, once again, back to MGS4...
  • sn3jk #47 5 years ago

Meh x10. Statue p***s grabbing, asscrack-showing, magic weapons out of thin air, stupid AI (hey, this manshaped pice of floor cant be nothing of interest for me, a trained soldier).

I own a PS3 btw. And 360. and Wii. And high end PC.
  • Steroyd #48 5 years ago

To delve into this deeper MGS's AI has always been this dumb on easy on MGS 3 they're practically blind, on European Extreme you can't so much as sneeze without someone suspecting you.

You also can't mess around with the soldiers as Kojima did on the higher difficulties although would be interesting to see how the soldiers react when they're disarmed and you let them go.

Hope this has full body awareness that Killzone displayed.
  • lennon #49 5 years ago

@reddevil93 - I own a wii but thats the problem. The wii has improved my gimmick radar to a unprecedented level.
  • glaeken #50 5 years ago

It does look very like a Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon hybrid.

Graphically its quite nice but fairly standard for this type of game these days so I am not sure where people are getting the amazing graphics comments from.

I thought the graphics looked better when it switched to FPS due to that blur effect.

The evironments looked quite open which could make things interesting.
  • matharding #51 5 years ago

I was really expecting something special with this, but the animation is pretty funny - all I want to say is....'Do a barrel roll!'.........
  • Emth #52 5 years ago

    To those critising the 'gimmicks'

Of course he could have have just shot everyone, or hid behind barrels in the demonstration, but clearly the point was to show different options (I prefer this word over gimmick) available to the player.

I like having a lot of choice, you may aswell say why not just have a silenced assault rifle with a scope as the only choice in x FPS game? You don't really need pistols, or light SMGs or etc... It's all about playstyles.

Just because he may not have used all the techniques shown in optimal situations, does not mean that those situations will not exist in the full game.
  • QotSAfan #53 5 years ago

"I own a PS3 btw. And 360. and Wii. And high end PC."

Still doesn't stop you from talking like a idiot :D

Game looks great. What impressed me the most was the open endness of the environments. Also the amount of options available to the player and how they approach the game looks to be quite deep. Overall, a major improvement yet it still retains that MGS style imo.

To anybody complaining about the AI, go play MGS2 on european extreme. Its like judging the whole of Killzone 2 on that picture we got.
  • LFMartins #54 5 years ago

Seriously,i didn´t expect to see this much hate for the game.
I was amazed by how much things changed, there´s so much more freedom and the animations are mind blowing.
I´d like someone to show me some gameplay footage of a game as good as this because until yesterday i was completely turned off by this "new-generation".
  • Nikanoru #55 5 years ago

I am not sure where people are getting the amazing graphics comments from.

    Desperate PS3 fans.
  • The-Bodybuilder #56 5 years ago

Loved the first, hated the second, and never played the third.

However I'm getting a dreamcast deja vu here.
With all my great DC games, I could only look on in envy at the ps2's MGS2 demo.

Unlike most "meh" bumfluffs here, I found the demo making me want a ps3.
  • The-Bodybuilder #57 5 years ago

A strong mix of action and stealth in a warzone.

I now hope that konami bring this to the 360, because I don't wanna buy a console just for one game.
  • The-Bodybuilder #58 5 years ago

After reading some more posts, I'm quite shocked at how hated this game is.

There are now 3 games that evoke unnecessary "I'm cool at meh'ing on eg" reactions:

    1. Halo

    2. GeOW

    and now...

    3. MGS 4.

Suprise suprise, all top sellers too ( you can even put GTA4 in that list too).

So basically, any popular game here recieves hate. But if some obscure japanesse title came out, EG would give it 10/10 and everyone would bow to it.
  • JediMasterMalik #59 5 years ago

A lot of people criticising this at like they've never played an MGS before, I mean seriously. Complaining about gimmicks and the game being silly, is as utterly pointles as complaining about bouncy breasts in an itagaki game.
  • glaeken #60 5 years ago

@LFMartins have you played any games in the last few years? How on earth are the animations mind blowing?

It's a good looking game and the animations are certainly Ok but nothing out of the ordinary for 3rd person games for maybe the last couple of years.

I actually I am begining to wonder if anyone is real on EG comments or its 100% troll/fan boy action.
  • Artemus #61 5 years ago

You can guarantee half these comments would change if this was on 360 as well.
  • JYM60 #62 5 years ago

Looked incredible. Anyone who thinks it looks shit just doesn't like 'proper' games!
  • penhalion #63 5 years ago

Yep it is dull dull dull. The strange thing is that it looks gorgeous but, once it started moving as in-game. It looked like metal gear 2 with great graphics. Everything that Kojima did seemed to take you out of the emersion like pulling an rpg from nowhere, then pulling out a robot from thin air, then the AI that didn't fight back etc. etc. And don't get me started on all that Grey!
  • Razz #64 5 years ago

It doesn't look that special to me. Definitely a fan service. I hope you lot enjoy it. :)
  • Draqule #65 5 years ago

Shut up.....you shut up!.....no you shut up!!.....will everyone just shut up.................what was that? The wind!
  • Vin #66 5 years ago

"You can guarantee half these comments would change if this was on 360 as well."

    You're fucking nuts.
  • The-Bodybuilder #67 5 years ago

    >"It looked like metal gear 2 with great graphics"

    SHOCK HORROR.
    O'RLY?

Whatever next? SMG will look like SM64, but with great graphics?
  • Luvbeers #68 5 years ago

  • DjFlex52 #69 5 years ago

Alot of PS3 gamers are depending on this game to sway critics....oh well
I, for one, was more impressed by Killzone 2 and Drake. The only thing next gen about this demo demonstration was the graphics. And I hope there are more colors and better art direction used in other levels. I thought GeOW had too-muted colors but this was all mud looking.
Also, the animations and AI appeared last gen, IMO, and there's too much menu hopping....where's the next gen innovation I've heard so much about?
  • Razz #70 5 years ago

    +1

That's a nice bit of commonsense right there.
  • JediMasterMalik #71 5 years ago

Would people stop banging on about the AI? It's quite clear it was massively turned down for a smoother presentation.
  • The-Bodybuilder #72 5 years ago

    >"where's the next gen innovation I've heard so much about? "

Where did you hear about this "next gen innovation"?

In fact, what the heck is next gen anyways?
  • penhalion #73 5 years ago

    @jedimastermalik

WTF are you on about? The AI was not turned down. Kojima stated this was proper in game footage. What you saw is what you will be getting. Can't you see that this is why no-one is impressed. It's as if the graphics have moved on but, Kojima is standing still with both his AI Soldiers and gameplay!
  • Razz #74 5 years ago

Would people stop banging on about the AI? It's quite clear it was massively turned down for a smoother presentation.

    PMSL! XD
  • JediMasterMalik #75 5 years ago

I've heard them do that for a lot of other game presentations, I don't see why they wouldn't here. The AI has never been quite as stupid as was shown in that demonstration in any pevious MGS game. They certainly wouldn't be that bad in the actual game. Use some common sense.
  • Razz #76 5 years ago

I thought you were being funny mate.

As in "Tehy turned down teh grafix coz itz a presentation initlol."
  • JediMasterMalik #77 5 years ago

Wasn't talking about graphics though, if the AI was too tough, that 15 minute presentation could have gone on for a lot longer. The graphics also looked very good to me.
  • Razz #78 5 years ago

That, my friend, is what we like to call an example.
  • glaeken #79 5 years ago

So anyway I thought the AI looked a bit poor.
  • JediMasterMalik #80 5 years ago

err... ok... but tuning down AI and difficulty makes sense, graphics doesn't. I'll give you that it was a bad example. ;)
  • ronuds #81 5 years ago

Gotta join the "meh" folks on this one. I know... cliche. Probably not fair coming from someone who doesn't like stealth games anyhow.

I also thought the animations needed a lot of work, so I'd have to disagree with some there.

No doubt this will sell a bunch and make its owners very happy, though.
  • zuljin #82 5 years ago

    @penhalion
"WTF are you on about? The AI was not turned down. Kojima stated this was proper in game footage. What you saw is what you will be getting."

Eh, no. Yes in game, no not what you will be getting, 2 reasons:
    1. It ain't finished. Isn't the release date end of 2008 or something?

    2. Never ever do a full presentation of everything. Think about it. If everything was as you are going to see it when it comes out, why not release it now? Demos are hacked, played with god mode on, faked etc. In fact, all a game is at the end of the day, is smoke and mirrors.

Demos? Much more smoke, many more mirrors.

I was upset at the horrendous animations however. It really did make him seem geriatric.
  • Kenshin001 #83 5 years ago

Game looks barmy, lots of fun. Haven't played much MGS but will definitely be picking this up. Lots of stuff you don't see in generic shooters, the camo suit, squeezing the guys nuts, judo moves, girlie mags, rolling in drums and throwing up lol, the remote control robot and that was just in a couple of minutes gameplay.

Can't see what people are bitching about to be honest. Lighten up folks.
  • JYM60 #84 5 years ago

    @ Penhalion

You must be a fucking idiot. The AI might be like that on VEasy mode but who plays on this mode. Thats what JMM meant by 'toned down'.
Have you ever play MGS or are you just being inetionally morronic?
  • DjFlex52 #85 5 years ago

"Can't see what people are bitching about to be honest. Lighten up folks."

You can't see??...then you're blind....and so are the soldiers in that demo
This game is supposed to make people want and buy a PS3 so expectations are higher than for Mercenaries and Assassin's Creed.
MGS4 and FFXIII are supposed to be system sellers for Sony and justify the high price tag. There's no excuse for very poor AI, even in a demonstration, in a next gen game unless it's on purpose like in EDF.

At one point, a soldier was face to face with Snake w/o camo and didn't see him....thats unacceptable even on easy mode.
  • TriggerHippie #86 5 years ago

Pretend to be a statue? At his age?? There should be a 50% chance he accidently lets one go, or goes into a convulsive coughing fit.
  • Kenshin001 #87 5 years ago

    @DJFlex52

No offence, but all your Most Wanted are 360 games so your opinion is kind of moot. Since it won't ever be coming out on 360 you have nothing to worry about. I'm not worried about the AI because it was set low so they could demonstrate the features. You can adjust the level. This is a common feature in video games in case you didn't know.
  • Benno #88 5 years ago

Snake uses a PS3 controller to operate the little metal gear!

You have heard it here first people! MGS4 will officially NEVER come to the Xbox! ZOMG
  • Benno #89 5 years ago

with the statue penis grabbing and the male floor humping coupled with the women in the porn mags i really do wonder if its gays or straights mr kojima is trying to attract to this game.
  • JediMasterMalik #90 5 years ago

It wasn't humping, it was a judo like move to incapacitate your enemy.

    pervert ;p
  • captainrentboy #91 5 years ago

Well that did nothing to change my mind about MGS, I managed about 5 minutes of that video before getting bored rigid, whether it goes on the 360 in the near future or not, I certainly wont be getting it.
And why was it all so gay, floor humping, man humping, ass thrusting, why?
And yeah, the a.i was comical, hopefully for you MGS fans it was really just like that for demo purposes.

    >I'm not worried about the AI because it was set low so they could demonstrate the features

Wouldn't it be much cooler to give a live demo of some incredible AI?
  • DjFlex52 #93 5 years ago

    @DJFlex52

    @Kenshin001

No offence taken, and though, my most wanted are all 360 games it's because that's what I presently own. And when there are great games to play and a cheaper price I will own a PS3....so my opinion is not...moot. When I own a PS3 there will be some most wanted games on my list otherwise why list them? My opinion has nothing to do with my most wanted list, fanboy....i'm a gamer, first and foremost.

Your sarcasm has no backbone, Kenshin001. So are you saying if the AI was higher they could NOT demonstrate the features? That sucks bigtime then...in case you didnt know.

Talk about being unable to accept the truth. So let me get this straight you are calling Kojima himself a lair are you? Apparently this in-game footage isn't representative of the final game and he's lying when he says that is's an actual exerpt from a finished level.

You guys amaze me really. Just because the gameplay didn't have the desired effect of having everyone swoon over it you suddenly say it must have been toned down or something. Er hello! *knock* *knock* Kojima is an expert player! He knows the game inside and out so why the frak would he need to turn anything down!

If you love metal gear games then good luck to you. I'm sure you will enjoy this. For the rest of us it was uninspiring and dull so live with it.
  • JediMasterMalik #95 5 years ago

@Penhalion - I don't think I've eveer seen you post anything positive about Sony or the games on Sony's system, your opinions on MGS4 are completely biased against it, no matter how unbiased you madly think you are.

Not that I'm doubting anyone or anything, but is there like a link to anywhere (official) that states the A.I was knocked down a peg or two for the demo?
Like someone else said, surely these guys are pretty bloody good at their own game, so wouldn't there have been a more positive reaction had the A.I been amazing?
  • Negotiator #99 5 years ago

No game yet for the next gen has shown AI of a higher quality than was seen on Xbox PS2 and GameCube, which is a worry. All this raw processing power seems to be being used for fancy graphics and MGS4 is no different.

I doubt that they would admit it to it. Just look at the reaction Silicon Knights got at what they previewed of Too Human. People see a game running, and they think its the final product. They slate it (as so nicely demonstrated on this comments thread) based on 5 minutes of video.
  • JYM60 #102 5 years ago

My god, did you even read what I wrote, VERY EASY MODE. That any clearer.

Yes it is part of the game but you would never play it on this as it's too easy. It would however be useful for somthing like say a presentation. Would it have been better if Snake kept dying during Kojima's presentation?

    Idiot.

I'll also say, I really don't give a fuck whether you or others care about MGS. I'm pointing out the fact you are talking shit, I'm not crying over the fact that everyone doesn't get hard over MGS.

Can't be bothered reading the comments but this game looks pants. MGS's have increasingly boring me, although Splinter Cell does too to be honest, far too fiddly with awfully clunky and slow controls..... but yeah, this game looks VERY underwhelming. He still can magic an oil drum out of nowhere to hide in, wtf. Grr
  • smoothn00dle #113 5 years ago

Nasty here.. Criticize this level of graphic and gameplay to nothingless, sounds bias. Look at Halo3 or Splinter Cell, where is the gameplay demo? Show it, I want to see it.

    Console fanboys.

    lol
  • v3rtigo #115 5 years ago

Christ, what's all the fuss about.
I've seen some impressive stuff for the PS3 but this is extremely underwhelming. The graphics look average at best and the gameplay looks as crippled and arthritic as the animations.
I am so very puzzled about the MGS hype, if this is all they can come up with.
Heavenly Sword better be a cracker.
  • Machiavellian #116 5 years ago

    First the Good
The graphics were very crisp. The textures looked very nice and Snake is about as detailed as they come. Animations were not that bad, explosions looked decent and rag doll physics looked spot on. Snake abilities have expanded (ala Splinter Cell) There seems to be a ton of Options at Snake exposable which is very good.

    The Bad
The Animation only looked slightly better than MGS2 (credit to the game).
Fire effects looked very out of place but there is enough time to fix those (probably place holder anyway)
Seeing Snake butt really is not what I want to see in the game!!!
Instant Weapon switching, Barrels and Menu pauses really take you out of the game I feel.
Though the graphics are very clean, to me they are just on par for what you expect to see from the PS3 or the 360. The graphics looked slightly better than Gears and Assassin Creed but not better than COD4.

MGS4 looks very solid and definitely a very Nice addition to the PS3 library but if I did not already have a PS3, It alone would not be enough for me to purchase one after watching he demo.
  • zozart #117 5 years ago

I love my 360 but MGS4 (especially after this awesome trailer), GoW3, FF13 and, maybe, Heavenly Sword are going to convert me very quickly.

Hopefully there'll be a PS3 price cut too before any of the aforementioned games come out. :D

I spot a weakness in 360 hardware graphic. by compare MassEffect gameplay video with MGS4 gameplay video. Masseffect background look plain in comparison. The amount of thing happening at the background in MGS4 like

    1 smoke from the building
2 the flying paper in the air around snake
3 The car shaked when big explosion hit
4 the number of AI enemies(20) occur in the same time.

I think 360 can only handle a limited amount of those tasks that explain the emptinesses in MF. Next I got to try out GOW.. to see what is like.

    @v3rtigo
Can u explain to us in detail what do u mean by:
"The graphics look average at best"
"gameplay looks as crippled and arthritic as the animations"
  • Vandrius #122 5 years ago

See, that was about the best gameplay preview I've ever seen, hands down.

The graphics were amazing, the gameplay looks extremely dynamic and the context-sensitive bits seemed to be very intuitive. Not to mention the bullet physics - sprays of dust and pockmarks for chrissake.

To be honest, I'm going to generically paint anyone who says "meh" to this as a 360 fanboy hiding under their gears of war kiddy blanket. I apologise for the one or two people who honestly thought "meh" that I painted with this.

Sour grapes much? Get over it.
  • spongebob #123 5 years ago

penhalion is just pissed because he was transferred back to developing yearly sports games.
  • Machiavellian #124 5 years ago

I can see why you have a few people that say Meh. The reason why is the campy gameplay mechanics that some love and some hate.

The weapon switching just feel very Old school especially will newer games coming out with realtime weapon switching. The barrel poping up out of nowhere, the camoflage where snake is on the ground and then the enemy is right next to him and cannot see him. The fire effects that looked so out of place with all of the nice crisp textures and detail. The menu system where you have to just to change camo and weapons etc. There is a lot to nick pick if you want when you watch the gameplay trailer. All Nickpicking aside the total concept looks great and the game does look like fun.

smoothn00dle, the only thing I will say to your assement is COD4. There is nothing that I have seen in MGS4 that cannot be replicated on the 360 at the same fidelity as the PS3. Hell you only have to go as far as Gears of War
  • numptyboymatt #125 5 years ago

I actually think that this looks pretty good - better than I was expecting - am very tempted to get this, but might hold out incase they announce a 360 game. The multi-format games, I tend to get on the 360 as I find the buddy list easier to use and the achievements are also a draw (at least until Home gets launched)
  • SwedBear #126 5 years ago

Vandirus. Or they just don't think it is more than Meh. Stop being so fucking insecure about your choice of console. I felt it was a bit meh myself but that's mainly because I also am not so fond of the whole MSG game mechanics so it kind of makes my opinion unimportant. Probably won't be getting this for my PS3.

Overlush: I'm glad I still haven't put you on ignore :). You keep brightening my day with all your fanboy crap you sprout in every possible thread :).

Penhalion: Think about it. If you are going to show off something in front of journalists and have a limited time - why wouldn't you turn down the difficulty level to the easiest just to make sure you don't die all the time? I've been on many presentations where they do this. It's still in-game fottage but just made a bit easier. Same thing with lots of demos. I think you should give them the benefit of the doubt in that regards and wait for the final version. They still have plenty of time to dial up the AI and difficulty level before shipping the game.

FWIW - one reason you still see lots of 360 owners taking a piss at PS3 owners is that for a long time we've been told how inferior the 360 is, how much better everything will look on the PS3 because of "Teh Cell", how the 360 cannot handle a game like MSG4 and so on and so on. You reap what you sow. I think it's quite unnesserary to keep doing it as it just pisses people off. It's two great consoles and it should be quite obvious by now that they both are capable of great looking games. But I guess people need to argue :).

You forget the character factor. This is Solid Snake we're talking about, not some unknown soldier. I don't play FPS games, but I would play this.
  • Nikanoru #128 5 years ago

Not to mention the bullet physics - sprays of dust and pockmarks for chrissake.

See, and that's where PS3 proponents lose their credibility. I mean, what you mention has been done in every FPS since Goldeneye on the N64! And don't go and tell me it looked like crap then. Every impact in Goldeneye caused highly detailed bullet holes with little shadows and everything, sparks, little bits of debris flying from it and smoke coming from it afterwards. Not to mention what this looks like in recent games. No, bullet impacts are a silly thing to praise this trailer for indeed.

You know what? I've been watching some RE4 videos, and apparently I'd forgotten how good that game looks (it's been a long time), because the lighting, environment detail and art direction left me more impressed than this.

I know, I know - MGS4 will look better in HD (even though the HD Gametrailers video didn't leave me any more impressed, but I'll take your word for it). But still, that's not very good for a game that's been hyped as the killer app for a console that's been hyped as the second effing coming of Christ in the graphics department, don't you think?
  • zuljin #129 5 years ago

I did notice the bulletsprays, and to me they impressed me differently. It was done very nicely, and as you say has been done before, but what I thought was a nice touch was that it was very "Holywood".

Usually enemies shoot with a very random factor - hot or miss, but the bullet trails did show a specific line an enemy was firing in. I just thought that was a nice touch, since I've not really seen that before (excluding scripted sequences).
  • The_Inquisitor #130 5 years ago

The main problems with MGS up to the third game was not so much the camera but the movement. If you were on your belly when attacked, it took ages to get up before you could do anything. Now at least you have more options and it looks a lot less erratic with the introduction of the lock-on.

I'm guessing that this is just the first level and a lot has yet to be revealed, though so far, the engine though familiar looks solid.

"Actually the MGS4 Demo could have shown way better AI by just putting Snake in GOD mode."

True. But if the AI was killer and he was playing in god mode, the AI would still avoid his stealth attacks.

Besides, I'm sure he was playing in god mode anyway. On slight tangent, heard a rumour KZ2 was played in god mode...
  • ParanoidZombie #135 5 years ago

Lots of cool features indeed... Problem is, MGS 1 2 and 3 had tons of cool features as well, but in the end they were pretty useless...
Reminds me of the hypracool MGS2 trailer in 2001, which was staging Snake in the tanker, gunfighting against the mercs, doing a lot of stuff I never did in the game because I didn't get spotted. CQC, stamina bar, emergency health kit, camo system in MGS3 were uninteresting features as well (I beat the game twice) but they looked impressive enough to build some solid hype.
That new snake suit will turn out useless, it's like the MGS3 system without the menus, the urban warfare context is not looking as good as Splinter Cell's double agent's Kinshasa mission so far... And when I see Snake using a rocket launcher, I see something I'll never use because it's a stealth game, and when I see the judo thing I only think that CQC was so unreliable in MGS 3 that I ended up using only the tranquilizer.

Don't get me wrong, I would have been impressed by this footage... If only I hadn't played MGS1 2 and 3... And I didn't mention the inevitable CODEC moment and the 15 minutes cutscenes that probably sandwich this gameplay sequence.
  • Steroyd #136 5 years ago

It's a stealth game (well Stealth action), there were parts that normally you would have been sussed out easily, being in God mode and just shooting all the soldiers like it was a FPS wouldn't have done the presentation any good overall.

    About MGS4 now..

The demo looked "nice". I expected maybe way much more of it and it might be the case since this game should be the PS3's big move in sales. But yet I liked a lot the smooth graphics on some parts even though some details werent as good.. I got really mixxed feelings about the game. The bots looked too easy to manipulate ( like smelly and some other dudes ) and I would like on a game like that to see some skill to be needed. I think that it needed a demo played by somone skilled showing how cool you can feel for playing such a game. So the demo was just not enough. He kept the stealth element too much just proving how easy the game can be with your option.. Anyways. I havent been expecting much since i forced myself to finish the second MGS game witch wasnt even close to what I wanted ( MGS3 was way worse so didnt even bother ).
