First Halo Waypoint content discovered

Live 'destination' launches tomorrow.

Halo Waypoint arrives on Xbox Live tomorrow, and the first pieces of content have been revealed.

From launch you will be able to watch a Spotlight on Louis Wu, Halo in Five Minutes and a Welcome to Waypoint introduction. Louis Wu is the main protagonist in the Ringworld series of books, upon which the Halo series is loosely based.

There will also be community Halo 3: ODST Firefight screenshots to browse, reports Joystiq, plus some strategy tips from walkthrough guru Prima.

Then, on Saturday, fans will be treated to the first full episode of Halo Legends - the diverse anime series that picks apart the Master Chief licence from varying viewpoints.

Halo Waypoint is an Xbox Live channel or 'destination' that aggregates everything related to the IP. Content will be split into Intel and Career sections, with the first focusing on videos, fiction etc., while the latter tracks in-game stats and Achievements.

And there's some freebie stuff for your avatar.

So you can check your in game stats like on Bungie.net? If so then good move.

I might relive my childhood by waking up early on Saturday morning to watch the first Halo Legends episode.

  • metalangel #5 2 years ago

    Whoopee fucking do

You can't (in the beta preview) check stats in as much detail as Bungie.net, it's more like progress tracking.

"And there's some freebie stuff for your avatar."

Get ready for 50% of all avatars to be wearing Halo armour. I'm a massive hypocrite though seeing as my avatar will be covered in Left 4 Dead 2 stuff when it's available.

You get a Monitor (Guilty Spark) just for using the Waypoint, but the rest of the clothes have to be unlocked. I can't remember exactly what you need, but there's a hoodie you get for having one of the ODST achievements, the helmet for finishing the whole game, the ODST armour for getting the good samartain achievement and a Recon helmet for getting the Endure one.

I imagine a lot of people will be wearing the stuff soon, but at least it has to be unlocked.
And I hope they add some more to for the other games, as everything is just for ODST at the moment.

The achievement/award system is actually pretty cool, it's nice that it takes your progress for doing certain things through-out all the game and adds them together. But it does still seem pretty pointless, I don't really understand why it couldn't have just been incorporated into the Bungie site.

Sounds really good. Roll on Saturday! :D

For those of you who don't know him, Louis Wu runs halo.bungie.org, probably the biggest Halo fan site out there.
  • darleysam #12 2 years ago

Yeah, I think the Louis Wu in the feature is the guy who runs halo.bungie.org rather than Larry Niven's character. He also puts on an annual Halo party at his house which is pretty awesome.

Can't wait to grab my ODST suit as soon as it goes live.
  • MaxHughes #14 2 years ago

@ Sunyavadin, it looks really good. I'm glad they put the ODST suit as a reward because I was contemplating on getting the UNSC suit from the marketplace, but the ODST suit is 1000 times better :D

Yeah, it's like there's no logical reasoning behind the pricing or freeness of various avatar items...

And seriously, who wrote this article anyway? Louis Wu is one of the biggest names in Halo Fandom. Yes, he uses the name from Ringworld, but the concept of the books has almost nothing to do with the games at all, in fact the ringworld concept PREDATES the books. Mentioning who he actually *IS* might be a bit more useful info to people that who the person he named himself after was.

It is quite obvious that some elements of the Ringworld books are semi-used within the Halo Universe. And Sunyavadin, quite wrong. Larry Niven, author of the Ringworld, is the officially the first one to come up with the concept of a ring - but using Dyson's theories to create the concept - see here.
And there must be a reason why the main person of Halo fandom calls themselves Louis Wu, right? Coincidence? I think not.

I paid 400 points for the Marine armour. How stupid do I feel now? :(
  • Sunyavadin #18 2 years ago

A Niven Ring is FAR removed from something like the Halo rings, which are more of a Lagrange space station with an artificial ecosystem. A Niven Ring, like a Dyson Sphere, encloses a star, whereas the Halo rings are more similar to concepts for generational spacecraft or long term, but feasible to manufacture habitats such as a Culture Orbital. Whilst it is a no-brainer that the idea of it as a planetary environment being popularised is traceable back to Niven, smaller ring shaped habitats such as those utilised in the Halo games and Culture novels owe more in their design to a mix of older ideas and a simplified version of Niven's concept.

But as I said, this COMPLETELY ingores the fact that the article claims that "you will be able to watch a Spotlight on Louis Wu... Louis Wu is the main protagonist in the Ringworld series of books, upon which the Halo series is loosely based."
The spotlight has NOTHING to do with the Ringworld character besides the name. The article misleadingly implies that it is about him.

It'd be like interviewing "Thomas Jefferson", shopkeeper from Brooklyn, on effects of the recession - and then an article linking to the interview introducing him as "the third president of the United States, and author of the declaration of independence"
  • Spekingur #19 2 years ago

Unless they are saying that Halo is loosely based upon Louis Wu?
  • Sunyavadin #20 2 years ago

If so, I totally wish I was him.
