Final Fight, Magic Sword for PSN/XBLA News

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

26 November, 2009

Old beat-'em-ups Final Fight and Magic Sword are being repackaged for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

They'll boast upscaled HD and original graphics, plus drop-in online (and presumably local) co-op and the necessary swathe of Leaderboards.

Publisher Capcom told IGN that both games would be stuffed into one virtual box next year, although a price is still TBC.

Final Fight, released in 1989, appeared first. The idea was to guide muscle-men in tight trousers through Metro City in search of Mad Gear. And punch things.

Magic Sword, released a year later, swapped jeans for tights and guns for spells as The Brave One fought some bonkers elf or rat or something.

I had Final Fight on my Atari ST. The graphics could have used a bit of polish, the frame rate gave it the same feel as browsing the Village Peoples photo album.

At least the ST version had Guy, I believe the SNES version only had two playable characters.

Final Fight yay. Hope it's a good remake and not a lousy port.

I liked Magoic Sword back in teh day. But it has probably aged pretty badly now.

Imagine Boris taking to the mean streets to pile drive some oiks into the pavement. That's just crying out for a photoshop/flash animation, surely?

mode7, my brother and I had Final Fight on the Atari ST as well. Another thing you couldn't do on the Atari ST version was have the sound effects and music on at the same time.

Ha! Only yesterday I said how nice it would be to have Final Fight on XBLA/PSN. Used to love this game on the pier in Weston-super-Mare before they got rid of the old cheap arcade machines.

Did nobody else find that Final Fight got a tad repetitive (same bad guys, same moves) when played the whole way through? I'd really like a modern take on old-skool 2d beat-em-ups with a bit more depth - viewtiful joe style, but a little more 'haggar' would be ideal. Anyone got any suggestions?

(having said all that - online co-op may be enough to sway me to a purchase for this, probably for the 3rd time or so since it was originally released!)

This sounds cool although I think the long term replayability won't be as essential as Street Fighter Remix HD

Bit of a strange double-pack, they're nowt like each other. I'll be picking it up anyway, although I got Final Fighted out on the surprisingly good GBA version so I'm more interested in replaying Magic Sword now. Get me escape!

Final Fight is without a doubt the best side scrolling beat-em up I've ever played, and I've played my fair share of them, probably more than my fair share if I'm honest.

Really looking forward to this one, this and Alien Breed (when it comes out) will make a great day, reliving my years with the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga.

I knew it. I think I saw people was after this on Capcom Unity not long after the PSN release here of SF Turbo HD. I'm a bit of an old school side scroller at heart.

The ultimate and best final fight released was on the Sega CD, that was quality, loads of different modes and proper quality cd tunes too! Will the remake be as good apart from being HD?...
