Final Fantasy XIII coming to 360

Will be out same time as PS3.

Final Fantasy XIII is coming to Xbox 360, Square-Enix has confirmed.

Speaking at Microsoft's E3 2008 press briefing, Square-Enix boss Yoichi Wada confirmed the stunning news, stating: "At long last, the day we've all been waiting for has arrived. It gives me great pleasure to unveil this to you today."

In no way understating the significance of the announcement, Microsoft's Don Mattrick said: "Final Fantasy XIII is an astonishing addition to our growing array of RPG titles.

"Final Fantasy joins a long list of former PlayStation franchises finding a new home on Xbox 360," he beamed. A lengthy trailer was shown, albeit mostly CG.

No release dates were mentioned, with the only information being that the 360 version would be available "at launch". Presumably later in 2009.

However, Square-Enix is currently holding a press conference at the LA Convention Center and the bit of Eurogamer not typing this is sitting in the front row feverishly taking notes, so expect some updates soon.

The news followed preview presentations of two of Square-Enix's other 360 RPGs, namely Star Ocean, due Spring 2009, and Infinite Undiscovery, out later this year. We're also told to look forward to Last Remnant. So do that.

Check back for all the Square-Enix trailers, including FFXIII, later today.

    Final fantasy coming to 360 is proof that both consoles are equal in power.

    It just means that Squenix have gotten the same performance from both machines, it doesn't mean either is being pushed to the limit.

    at least MGS4 is staying with Sony...for the time being...

    Sony's insistance on not paying for exclusives is crazy. FF XIII on 360 is a killer blow to them. God of War 3, LBP,Uncharted 2 and Resistance 2 have to be 8/10 titles at the very least.

    Mirror's Edge, Assassin's Creed 2, Unreal 4 (when it comes) and Burnout 6 would be great exclusives for the PS3, but sony doesn't want to pay for them.

    On a side note, How much is this costing MS? FF XII, Fallout 3 Content, GTA IV Content. Are they deliberately trying to bankruot themselves?

    No they won't. The Squeenix guy actually said they were porting it in order to sell more in the US and Europe. Xbox 360 is not really a going concern in Japan, the only reason they're persevering is so they can court the attentions of Japanese publishers, who are themselves looking to markets abroad.

    Microsoft need to hijack themselves some Japanese branding if they want their next console to succeed over there. I reckon they missed a trick not buying Sega before Sammy did.

    If marketed right, LittleBigPlanet could be a 5m+ seller, but i dont have much faith in sony's advertising.360 lacks something like LBP at the moment and Sony could easily use that to their advantage, but I doubt they will. Why LBP in a FF XIII therad? FF XIII will sell machines, and so could LBP.

    Japan is realizing that money is sweeter than loyalty - especially when said loyalty is not royally rewarded! I think Square was the last major hold-out for PS3 support, now that this kind of precedent has been set, how many developers will be stubborn like Kojima and remain exclusive?

    Very surprised by the announcement myself, and also very beneficial as I only have a 360 and FFXIII was one of my most anticipated for PS3. Good thing I don't have to shell out for another console to play it :)

    On the bigger picture though, it's really a win-win scenario for everyone (well maybe apart from Sony) but from from a consumer view, it means more people get a chance to play it, me for one.

    Naturally the fanboys won't see it that way. Unfortunately we'll hear about this now til the cows come home.

    i'll be getting the ps3 version. It will be on about 4 discs for the 360 plus the 360 is much noisier than the ps3.

    In order for sony to have a good E3,I'd reccommend the following:

    Solid Release dates for LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Motorstorm Pacific Rift and Home
    Full Video download store with all major hollywood studios supporting it.

    Dont care Ive got both consoles, but still I think ill get it for ps3, because that way I wont have the hassle of disc swapping. Also I dont want to run the risk of my 360 crapping out on me whilst playing it.

    But PLEASE!!!!!! dont make it into another FFXII, please!

    This really doesn't matter. FFXIII will be a major system seller in Japan and it's interesting that it wasn't mentioned that the 360 version would even be out at launch in Japan. Plus, we don't know if the 360 version will match the performance of the PS3 version.

    I didn't used to be but my Elite died last week so I'm now A FULL-ON PS3 fanboy! I'm not even going to bother getting it replaced this time. It's PS3 and Wii for me from now on.

    I kind of liked Final Fantasy 12.. for the first few hours. Then all my characters maxed out all their skills and became practically the same. That killed the fun completely.

    @monkie_king - You kidding? What kind of game is this again? And what are the sales like for those games on the 360? FF always moves a lot of units regardless, it makes far less sense to have IU be 360 exclusive then to bring FFXIII to the 360. It's all about demographics.

    The Final Fantasy series will never be the same without Sakaguchi Noboru Uematsu anyway. but still I cant wait!

    But to be honest one of my favourite things about the series is being able to talk about and criticise them with my mates, this way more people play it.

    If both versions are equal, I'll get the PS3 version as it should come on a single blu-ray. My nephew on the other hand is leaping for joy at the news. He can't afford a PS3 (he's a student) and was pretty unsure of how he was going to get to play this whenever it finally appeared. I got him a 360 for christmas (more precisely I gave him my old one and got a new hdmi one).

    definitely good news for consumers.

    If I had any interest in JRPGs I would say the same thing :).
    I remember another comments thread a while ago where someone favoring the 360, indirectly suggested that the noise argument was pulled out way too often, and questioned it's validity. But seriously, I consider it an extremely valid argument - it's by far the main reason why I'm loath to use my 360 these days (and haven't for a couple of months, though I'm about to try the Too Human demo tonight), while I often keep my PS3 turned on most of the day, using it on and off for gaming and as a wonderfully quiet media center, both for Blu-ray movies as well as video streamed from my PC or from a USB stick or external HDD.

    The noise difference alone is enough to have made me pick an inferior PS3 port of a couple of games - and aside from the huge difference in fan noise between the two consoles, the even more pronounced difference in drive noise is no doubt thanks to that Blu-ray drive so many people say they don't want or need. It may be a bit slower than a DVD drive, but at least it doesn't have to spin around at insane speeds, trying to emulate the sound levels of a small jet turbine.

    If Microsoft cuts around, oh let's say 80 dB off the overall noise levels of future XBox 360 revisions, I would happily buy one of those new models and start using it alongside my PS3 :).

    It was a dodgy at best press conference, the 360 dashboard is nearly perfect as it is, why mess around with it?. Damn you microsoft, you b*stards. Hopefully sonys will be better, but I doubt it. Unfortunately I fear the nintendo conference, a new metroid would be nice though. Please though let homeworld 3 be announced, I'd be in heaven if it was.

    I find that my PS3 starts out silent and then over time (depending on the game no doubt) the fans will occasionally ramp up to noticable levels before calming down again. When the fans do come on however (or speed up or whatever they are doing) the noise level is much the same as the 360. The difference (and it's a big one) is that the 360 noise is constant while the PS3 noise is occasional. I still haven't figured out why microsoft doesn't fix this. Silent fans have been about for ages now.

    @penhalion - By the time it's out (taking into consideration it now needs to be developed for two platforms), the PS3 should be cheap enough anyway. ;)

    It does kind of annoy me now, because it will no longer be as good as it could have been, and it will take even longer to develop.

    Im not trying to turn this into a competition mate, just stating a personal opinion on the direction Squenix took on Final Fantasy XII. Personally, I couldnt give a toss what platform they are on as long as the developer pulls through this time.

    I read on Gamespot that FFXIII Versus is remaining an exclusive to ps3 tho, anyone else heard that?

    Heh, me too. Some people don't give a shit about noise. Personally i do, which is why i take the time and effort to ensure that my gaming PC is silent, and given the choice between a game on two platforms - one of which is noisy (and prone to failure), the other quiet and reliable - it's hard to justify getting the 360 port unless it looks far, far better.

    But yeah, like i said, most people probably don't care.

    MS is not paying.... developers want to develop on 360. It is easy and brings in lots of money.

    On the MS payed for this debate. I can say with some knowledge that they will have paid for some of these things, like the rock band exclusivity. Equally they will not have paid for the Capcom or Square Enix games but, may have agreed to pay or part pay for much of the advertising and promotion in the USA and europe.

    Sorry to say as a gamer at this rate I am never going to buy a PS3, every time I come up with a reason to justify buying a PS3 to myself something like this happens and I don't need to bother again.

    As for this disc swapping thing, so what... If I can't be bothered to get up and change a disc after 10 hours+ of gaming then I ahve bigger problems.

    As for disc noise... yes the 360 does make more noise... but what volume do you people have you TV/Sound systems at? I can honestly say the noise of my 360 (or even noisier PC) have never bothered me, personal preference and all that.

    Words along the lines of straws and clutching comes to mind.

    i bought a ps3 just before MGS4 for 3 reasons.

    1)MGS4
    2) Star Ocean 4
    3) Final Fantasy XIII

    so now that Star Ocean 4 is a xbox360 exclusive, and I love my 360 and merely like my ps3, looks like that was almost a waste of money is MGS4 wasn't so good

    in terms of the disk swapping issue, i actually prefer swapping discs a la Final Fantasy 7 - 9 and Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. I feel like i'm progressing that way i suppose. guess its because FF7 was the first RPG i got into so for me its the norm

    This is something that could easily backfire on Microsoft. FF games are known for voluminous cutscenes which cannot possibly be squeezed onto a single DVD disk. Even if it were spread over several DVDs, the content might have to be compressed more than the PS3 counterpart, or be upscaled or suffer in other ways (e.g. audio quality) that simply don't affect the PS3 release. I know if I liked FF titles (and I don't really) I know which platform I would favour.

    Great news for MS.

    Consider this small clarification though: In Japan, FFXIII will *be* PS3 exclusive. In foreign (English) territories releases will be on PS3 and Xbox 360.

    I guess (answering my own question from earlier) that Final Fantasy Vs. XIII is still PS3 exclusive then. I can't think why MS wouldn't mention it if it wasn't.

    I'm presuming here, but the game doesn't appear to be for Japan, which doesn't do much for the system's prospects there. I suspect Sony may have had a hand in that decision which leds me to believe this may not have been as much of a surprise to them as it has been for the rest of the industry...

    From the trailer it seems to be that it's PS3 only (exclusive) in Japan, while it's multiplatoform in EU and US. But the way they wrote it was uninspired considering that it can be read PS3 only in Japan. Which again doesn't make much sense if you look at it carefully, but is enough to confuse the Americans.

    Probably my major reason for buying a PS3. Oh well, at least I still have blu-ray which I can take advantage of.
    But the point is, and I do own all three systems is that I bought them all to take advantage of exclusive games.
    PS3 for Final Fantasy and metal gear solid, 360 for bioshock(at the time), PGR4, halo 3, Mass Effect etc, Wii for Super mario galaxy, Zelda, Metroid and so on. Things like this make me wish I had saved my money. Like on the 360 HD-DVD drive.

    im still planning to buy a ps3 for final fantasy 13, im an xbox owner but playing Final Fantasy on a xbox doesnt really appeal to me not to mention the loud fan..., i be sticking final fatasy with the ps3 ^_^, for ppl who wont get a ps3 for this game.. ur lucky :p
    its kinda sad to see sony lose another game but to hell with that, now xbox owners get a taste of gaming glory :D

    but sure we have to wait for the final verdict of both games and decide :)

    Why are all these people saying the 360 is louder? It's only louder sometimes. Example - while my Elite makes a noise all the time when running a game, the PS3 often decides it needs to put the cooling fans on. They're loud enough at the higher speed to drown a 360 out... Been noticing it a lot on standard def DVDs and on some games (MGS4 for example). I'm guessing it's to do with the scaler.

    Like Ive said the past 2 years the only tittle i wish that would that would come out to play on my 360 was this and i admited it was the only exclusive i was jealous of the Sony's exclusives since I'm not willing to pay so much money for a console thats being promoted for its BluRay and when it comes to games its pure bullshit..

    I guess Xbox had in this Gen the best RPGs and will keep having the upper hand by far. Im just glad that i'll enjoy the new FF tittle. I dont give a shit about PS3s doom. I do care tho to see them fail to be smarter and better to the consumer ofc next time around if there will be any. Plus like ive said the fact that Enix kept coming up with promotions of their games for the 360 was clear proof that the next FF would come out on the 360 as well. Now it's revealed. It better be good oO

    Resident Evil was also released on the Saturn and Dreamcast.

    Micro$oft have copied everyone's ideas since Bill Gates ran it.

    I like eadh console to have its own exclusives, how can it when M$ steal them.

    And what if it upsets you as a multi-platform game hater? ;) I bet FF XIII will now use UE3 and will look like shit and play like just a shiny HD upgrade. 360 and PS3 are very quick to turn the 'next gen' moniker into a joke.

    But like I said, SE doesn't have much of a choice. With 360 and PS3 combined selling less than SE would have anticipated at the start of the cycle for just the PS3 by now, it's the only way to make some money on the title. As for the console war, this will have no effect: Wii's momentum is not impacted. You'd think by now MS would realise where the real threat is coming from...

    FF13 is exclusive to PS3 in Japapn and given previous game your looking at around 9 months maximum of exclusivity for Sony.

    I think this all benefits everyone in the long run andwe will be lucky to see the game in Europe and US by next xmas.

    I dont understand how Sony are doomed and they have not had their conference yet?

    Other than FF i though MS conference was poor. Still no clue as to what games are coming out 1st quater next year.

    We may even see God Of War 3 before FF13 lol

    Its funny, if the ps3 gets an exclusive game (MGS 4), 360 fanboy's start crying, even though the 360's got twice as many exclusives.

    When the ps3 loses an exclusive they're happy and start saying things like "im glad so & so is coming to the 360," "PS3 will die now," "PS3 suck's."

    Well I hope it loses GEOW and Halo, then let's see how you feel.

    360 fanboy's are one sided, just cos you can't afford a pacific (sp) console doesn't mean it shouldn't have exclusive games.

    Actually, meh, the more chance for less 3rd party exclusives the better. Means i can curb my spending a little. 3 consoles, 3 sets of exclusives = craazy.

    I'd love to have MGS on the 360, its a good game, why shouldnt more ppl play it? IF i ever made a game that took 3 years of my life i'd want to gvie everyone the oppurtunity to play it.

I dont think a term has been used as much as "fanboy" is since wayne's worlds "not". Bit pathetic. Everyone a fucking fanboy - why else would you spend £3-400 on something you dont love? How short sighted are you all?

    Just buy what you buy - I have all 5 major consoles including the 2 portables - each have their own benfits. If I have no one else around in the house so I can crank up my 5.1 surround sound up to defening level to block out the crap and awful 360 turbine engine noise then I use that, if I feel like having my bluetooth connection dropped mid game between machine and pad I use my PS3, if I just wanna look like a prick then I use my wii. So they all have their downfalls sure - BUT they all have their plus sides too. Stop slaggin each other off about machines and talk about the games - it gets boring you know! Every title post on here results in console wars instead of about the game. Get over yourselves and enjoy the things machines are made for!

    You do know Bungie is no longer a MS exclusive developer, neither is Bioware, or Bizare Creations for that matter.

    What about all the 360 exclusives? They have way more than the ps3, so for that reason, no they shouldn't get MGS 4.


    Im talking about the games, without them the console would suck, its just the 360 seems to be getting them all (nothing is said then), its just when the ps3 got MGS 4, 360 fanboys kicked off.

    The 360 gets Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean 4 exclusively.

    The ps3 had FFXIII exclusively, now SE have decided to play unfair by releasing it on the 360 aswell.

    As you can see, the only fanboy here is SE.

    jeez, this thread has really brought out the unpleasant ppl! eurogamer need to implement some kind of fanboy indicator system. i don't like ignoring people cos i like to laugh at a good fanboy rant, but it would be nice to be able to record who is a fanboy of what. so i could see a post by jspoole or davisorle and just click the 'xbox fanboy' button, so all their future posts would be highlighted in a shade of green. likewise wingzerosys, banfoi, swam etc could all have their posts highlighted in blue to indicate ps3 fanboy (nintendo fanboys in red too, if we have any around here). that way i can still read the posts, but know not to take them too seriously... how bout it EG?

    FF13 was the last thing that was going to save my P$3 from collecting dust as an expensive DVD player. I cannot tell you how good it is to know that I won't have to sit there for hours waiting for downloads and updates....

    I bet that the Sq Enix make the game on the 360 and then port it over the P$3!!

    No exclusive on FF13 and 360 having exclusive on GTA4 downloadable content... What are $ony going to do now...

    This has gotten me thinking abou the PS3's general lack of RPG's - even after being out a couple years.
    The 360 has a decent sprinkling of them, though most I think we can agree were at least partly funded by MS to gain a foothold in Japan, whereas the PS3 has hardly any.
    I do wonder though, if this is less to do with developers willingness to work with the PS3, and more to do with the fact that the 'Next gen' (bit late to be using that term I suppose) machines simply have not taken off in Japan - either of them!

    Persona 4 being a PS2 game seems like a massive vote of no-confidence in the PS3 and 360, and what RPG has recently taken Japan by storm? Why Monster Hunter Portable 2 of course, for the PSP! Then you have Sega porting Phantasy Star to it, Falcom bringing a lot of their PC RPG's to it, and the DS getting a steady flow with almost too many RPG's to list.
    All of which makes me wonder, if it were not for MS and their fundign/co-funding of these games, would we actually be seeing many JRPG's on Next-Gen home consoles at all??

    Ehh, sorry, I guess I'm rather off-topic. This news did come as something of a shock, but I havent been able to get back into FF games since playing FF7, and the franchise has never been loyal to any one console, and neither am I, so its hard for me to get into the fanboy war.
    It sucks for Sony, but I think they are on the right track with their internal studios and 2nd party developer relationships.

    \Goes back to playing Etrian Odyssey 2.

    wingzerosys it's no one else fault other than your own for buying a PS3. If your happy with then fine but don't cry about it losing exclusives. Maybe you should have waited to see objectively which would do well rather than buying into brand loyalty simply because you had success with other Sony consoles.

    I also like how there appears to be all these accusations of Xbox fanboyism going around. I bet most 360 owners owned a bloody PS2 last time around! I know I did.

    In my own terms a fanboy is someone who buys a machine because it's simply made by their preferred company. Surely, by their own arguments, the original Xbox sold bad enough to not have such a huge number of Xbox fanboys.

    Are you sure it's just that people got a bit sick of Sony's lies, their arrogance as market leader, their insistence on pushing blu-ray over games and most importantly some (not all) fucking owners that seem to want to defend it no matter what it does!!?

    For all JSPOOLES ramblings, clear away the shit and he makes some sensible points. Poor JSPOOLE isn't a fanboy of Xbox; he's a product of Sony and some of its fans behaviour over the last ten years.

    I think my point was made perfectly when the petition to keep DMC4 exclusive appeared. WHAT THE FUCK.

    Not being a fan of RPG's I couldn't really give a fuck about the news but at least owners of the 360 will get to play it if they so wish.

    My main concern is reading all the drivel from cock waving 360 owners who proclaim that the PS3 is dead, doomed, etc - how the fuck you would want Microsoft to rule all is beyond me. No way should MS run away and take over anything.

    Be glad of a bit of competition because there will only be one winner - us! As each company tries to improve all sorts of things on their own system.

    On the up-side the 360 has FF coming to its system - the major downside - those avatar things. I would be worried about where the 360 is heading with that shit.

    Some 360 fanboys actually think themselves to be superior to PS3 fanboys, I'm sure it's the other way around too, but I've never seen such a pack mentality like this from another group, it's ridiculous, school ground thinking, that really needs to stop. Perhaps it's because the 360 is so much more successful then the PS3 that it garners more of these kinds of people, but it doesn't change the fact that it's unnecessary and ridiculous.

    I think, in general, games cease to be system sellers when they become multi-platform. What they do is give people one less reason to buy the 'other' system.

    Team Ico and FF were the only things I wanted on PS3 so they've lost a sale (unless something else comes along). Although they would have had to wait a while admittedly. ;)

    I'm also not sure what your point was regarding GTA4.

    Come to think of it, I don't ever remember a game being termed a system seller unless it was an exclusive at the time. GTA4 strangely, had some articles mentioning it as such, but I'm sure that's because it was a major franchise for just one system the generation before.

    I think there maybe a few people like me now which could mean the sum,

    1 FFXIII sold on 360 = 1 less PS3 console sold.

    I know its not an exact science but really how many people will buy a PS3 to play a game they can play on a console they already own?

    ill happily complete my console collection as soon as i can afford to. but pS3 is too much right now.
    last console i payed over £300 for was a Dreamcast... and we all know how that turned out.
    not interested in blue ray.
    my 360, wii and new PC will do the job for now.

    Everyone's making a big deal outta this but back when FF games moved from Nintendo consoles to Playstation consoles, if you had an N64, it was no FF, simple as that. Now its going to the 360 but if you have a PS3, at least you CAN still play the damn game.
