    Mmm... pretty. And Chocobos! :-D

Doesn't look that different to X though...
  • markypants #2 9 years ago

    Looks great.
Can't see a huge leap in technology from these screen grabs, but to be honest since FFVII it doesn't seem to matter how good the graphics are, the game hasn't IMHO been up to scratch story wise.

We will have to wait and see.

  • Blerk #3 9 years ago

FFIX was excellent on both story and game fronts, but was ignored by many because of the fantasy setting. X had an excellent story but lacked a little in the execution. I'm hoping that XII will mix the best of 7, 9 and 10. :-)
  • Nemesis #4 9 years ago

Nice. Can't wait to see the CG work on this one, always loved the Square stuff.

    How long we gotta wait?
  • Blerk #5 9 years ago

Round about.... forever? Near as dammit, anyway. Bet we don't see this one before 2005.
  • renzo #6 9 years ago

Bit silly making the male lead look so similar to Tidus. Hopefully it doesn't feel like FFX-3.

At least the female lead looks a lot sexier. Hopefully she's not a goody two-shoes! :-)
  • Psi #7 9 years ago

yeah how come we gotta wait so long after the bloody yanks!
  • Blerk #8 9 years ago

Putting on those huge borders takes a long time, y'know!
  • renzo #9 9 years ago

  • Zero Beat #11 9 years ago

Vaan looks like a cherub for crying out loud. See how goofy he looks close up.
  • Nikanoru #12 9 years ago

Is anybody else reminded of Star Wars episodes 1 and 2 when looking at the fourth screenshot and the last one?

Also, I was really hoping they would break the popstar pretty boy trend when I looked at that early advertisement....but....

Hell, why don't they just cut the bullshit and start making interactive hentai movies. You KNOW that's where they're headed.
  • valli #13 9 years ago

Vaan is even more feminine than Raiden! What's up with Japanese character designers these days? Also, these 2 leads got to be related (maybe that's old news).
  • Zero Beat #14 9 years ago

Incest. Now there's a plot direction for FFXII.
  • Scimarad #15 9 years ago

The rendered version of Vaan doesn't look half as bad the painted version - And yes they do look related, but maybe that's just the style of the artist.

    Ooooh, can't wait!

(by the way, all people who moan about Raiden in MGS II are OFFICIALLY dickheads and insecure in their sexuality - Okay maybe the last bit was stretching it...)
  • Kami #16 9 years ago

Hmm... a little androgeny with the characters... typical.

    Still looks good tho.
  • centralperkin #17 9 years ago

It doesn't come any better than the Final Fantasy Series, though it hasn't been the same since the day of VII and VIII. Though the graphics seen in X and XI online are obviously afar cry away from VII and VIII the narrative has done nothing but got worse! I don't know about other gamers, but isn't a game much better with a strong narative regardless of the graphics? Only time will tell whether XII will live up to the high standards laid before it.

You lot do realise that girly blokes (aka bishounen) are incredibly popular with young Japanese ladies? They're also becoming popular with the young lasses over in the West too, it seems.

Notice how it's only males who complain about male protagonists being "too feminine"?
  • Fizzy #19 9 years ago

This is what the world wouldve looked like in the year 2100 if the Nazi's had won. Seriously, why is everyone dressed like a cheap underage street crack ho?!?!?!

Still, hopefully the gameplay makes up for art, looks good though.
  • nasanu #20 9 years ago

If I did not know any better I'd swear that Square were American. What boring character designs...

Give me Cloud back. Sure he was blond haired blue eyed too, but he was super deformed and really f'd up. Vaan will have one weapon and one single line of speech:

    weapon: surfboard
    speech: california dude!

"NOTHING WILL EVER COME CLOSE TO Final Fantasy 7 (had to be said, didnt want to get your hopes up)"

    > I'm hoping that XII will mix the best of 7, 9 and 10. :-)

So we all agree that VIII was bobbins then?

Loved 7. LOVED IT. 9 was also very, very good. Never played 10 (still haven't got around to actually buying a PS2 ...
  • Genome #23 9 years ago

OK. It's another Final Fantasy fantasy rehash. I' guessing that the baddie nation (ie: the one you're not fighting for) will revive some sort of ancient evil that will prove to be the real enemy about mid-game?

And I bet that the main character is a whiny bitch.
  • Zero Beat #24 9 years ago

I like the look of a few things on the battle information. HP seems to be capped at 9999 once again (woohoo!), 999 Max MP are back and it looks like there's three status slots, which makes keeping track of what's wrong with your character a lot easier if each is limited to three ailments and they're not flashing around above the characters head.

It'll be interesting to see how the game looks only using half as many polygons as FFX (Gamespot) looks like those spot shadows are back after the realtime ones in FFX-2. The shaky cam footage I've seen looks fantastic enough, especially the new magic eye candy.
  • Blerk #25 9 years ago

Try "you're fuckin' dreaming time" instead and you might be closer to the mark.
  • WoodenSpoon #26 9 years ago

    I liked 8 actually.
    What was wrong with it?

    (Apart from the World Map)
  • Daryoon #27 9 years ago

    I prefered 6, 8 and 9 to 7 :p
  • Daryoon #28 9 years ago

The cliche is that 7 is the most popular because, for a lot of people, it was their first Japanese RPG and so it came as a bit of a revelation to them. Before that, J-RPGs were rare in the West, the only ones ever being released in Europe being Secret of Mana, it's abysmal clone Secret of Evermore, and the Quintet trilogy (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Time and Terranigma). And they were all action RPGs too! FFVII may have been the first of its type in this country...?
And the US only had FFI, FFIV and FFVI - neither of which gathered much mainstream appeal. When FFVII came out, with it's flashy CGI, everyone took notice. And even though many of the characters were obvious stereotypes or cliches, no one noticed because this was their first experience of the genre.

And anyone who says VIII is the worst FF obviously hasn't played II...
  • Blerk #29 9 years ago

    My personal preference:
VII, IX, VI, X, IV, VIII, V

Not played I, II or III to any great length so I can't really comment on those. :-)
  • StixxUK #30 9 years ago

Wow. It IS possible to make chocobos look like cool monsters.

    Love FF, but haven't played any except 6, 7 & 8 because I don't have a PS2. Even 2nd hand they seem to be a rip off.
  • Scimarad #31 9 years ago

    Vexx, please just..die, or something...

As for the 8 debate, It's my favourite - dodgy romance or not...

    To PAiN3 & PaIn3,

The game you're describing is FFX-2. This thread is for FFXII.
  • renzo #43 9 years ago

I never expected a Final Fantasy thread to deteriorate into such a cesspool for tards. Very disturbing.
  • BartonFink #44 9 years ago

I thought it was a WWE thread for a minute.
  • Blerk #45 9 years ago

It never fails to amaze me that some of the people who come into Final Fantasy threads can actually play the games, given that you have to be able to read English and follow complex storylines. Maybe they just skip the dialogue?
  • renzo #46 9 years ago

This thread makes me feel dirty. I thought a reasonable amount of intelligence was required to play RPGs? Apparently not.

  • Caid #48 9 years ago

(In an attempt to bring more FFXII related discussion to this thread)

Havn't Squares lead character(s) always been kind of bland? To my eyes the extras have always been the colourful ones. I can understand such a choice since Squenix would want as many as possible to be able to identify with the leads. Personally, I don't mind. I've played all FFs since IV and liked them all (in various degrees of course).

The setup with the princess and the thief is surprisingly close to the FFIX plot background, but it could still turn out quite diffrently I suppose.

I know it's immensly unlikely but I'm hoping the multiplayer combat system from FF:CC would spread to more of their games. Co-op multiplayer is great and it would give me and my wife a way of playing the game together instead of fighting for control of the PS2 whenever they release a new RPG.

I'm hoping the multiplayer combat system from FF:CC would spread to more of their games

    Ugh! I'm hoping it doesn't!

I generally get to play multiplayer games about once a year, for about an hour. And then it's usually a FPS. Getting someone to sit with me and co-op play a Final Fantasy game for 60+ hours would be absolutely impossible!

What "Colex" story? Pleaz pleaz pleaz explain this "Colex" story to me.
  • Caid #52 9 years ago

Blerk: If you don't intend to use it, what would it matter if FF supported a co-op multiplayer mode? I wasn't saying they should remove the single player mode.

I think co-op is great and as it has started to catch on with the FPS genre, I'm hoping to see more of it in other. Metal Gear Solid (and II) would be an excellent co-op game, pretty much like Rainbow Six but more focused on stealth (a Death Match mode in Metal Gear would also be cool of course).

Getting back to FFXII, I think the game as good potential. I've never played an Enix game before and hope to experience a bit of that company's influence in this game. Graphics seem good as usual (although top notch graphics is not particularly important in my book) and I have great expectations on the music (which is more important to me).

The one thing I do worry about is the female lead. Square has often supplied good female extras (including Beatrix, Lulu and Yuffie) while the leads (with the possible exception of Tifa) have been weak and demure. I must admit I would feel kind of funny playing a girl, but since I gather girls would feel the same about playing a guy I guess it's not more than fair that the female lead should be heroic too.

Blerk: If you don't intend to use it, what would it matter if FF supported a co-op multiplayer mode? I wasn't saying they should remove the single player mode.

As long as it was an optional thingy then I would have no complaints whatsoever. The trouble is, the way they've done it in FF:CC has somewhat diluted the single-player game to the point that it doesn't look as though it'll be half as fun playing on your own. Which is a shame, 'cos I was really looking forward to it.
  • renzo #54 9 years ago

"I've never played an Enix game before and hope to experience a bit of that company's influence in this game."

I don't think Enix will have any influence on this game. Only Square staff will be working on it.

"I don't think Enix will have any influence on this game. Only Square staff will be working on it. "

    One could always hope :)

Still, there seems to be a lot of new talent on the team so the game might be a bit diffrent after all.
  • renzo #56 9 years ago

I think a lot of the staff that worked on FF:Tactics Advance will be working on this. Some of them also worked on Vagrant Story (apparently), so we should see something a bit different from other FFs (hopefully).

I'm not usually an adept of tarding, but I just can't help it this time. It's fucking porn! Did you look at that girl's clothing (if it can be called that)? Come on! And then, honestly, how many of you have had girlfriends prettier than the game's male lead?
  • otto #69 8 years ago

You've got a point. I've seen more masculine ladyboys.
  • valli #70 8 years ago

  • OnlyMe #71 8 years ago

I think it's pathetic how many thinks the new characters are so "gaaay" and so forth. Go to bed, you're all just a bunch of teenagers with an identitycrisis. So insecure of yourself.

I think FFXII looks ace. Vaan looks okay. I loved FFVI-IX, didn't think X was as good, but not because of the characters, but because of the boring story and no world-map. And wasn't Tifa's boobs overly large? Nobody complained about that. I would rather have a girl with little clothing, than a girl with huge boobs in a Final Fantasy game. Huge boobs in a game characters really makes the girl look like a whore. Or a porn star or whatever. None of the new characters even look close to the sluttyness of Tifa.
  • Dizzy #72 8 years ago

    Hooray for cross dressers!
  • marilena #73 8 years ago

Sorry to ruin your argument, but I'm 24 and feel completely secure about my sexuality. That doesn't mean I have to like boys that look like girls. Mind you, it doesn't mean you should dislike them, either. It's a fact of life: some people like certain things, others don't. There is no right and wrong here, it's a matter of taste and I, as a person that doesn't like boy-dolls have the right to express my opinion.

It is worth mentioning that I never liked japanese RPG's, wich puts me outside of the game's target (that and the fact that I'm not a Japanese teenager; the "japanese school-girls love it" argument that comes up from time to time pisses me of. So what? Are young japanese girls the ultimate judges of taste?).

Oh, and I definitly think this looks like porn. The girl might not have big breasts, but her skirt isn't exactly huge either.

Yah, I understand people have different tastes. But I'm just tired of all the "OMG, Vaan lookz like a girl, zo gay! He sucks, because I'm so 1337!" shit. And a lot of that stuff comes from teenagers who's afraid that so wants to be a real MAN. In other words, laughable. Teenagers can't be men, no matter what. And in my opinion, Vaan looks just like any other 17 year old I've seen. It's the clothing that's different, if he had different clothes, people wouldn't have complained. But clothing has always been strange in Final Fantasy. I didn't exactly find Squalls clothes very masculine either.

And the teenagers today dress like idiots anyway, so why should Final Fantasy be any different?
  • marilena #76 8 years ago

    Where do you come from?

And yes, I know they're not having sex in the pictures, but they do look like they're going to have a go at it pretty soon.

    Do you live in Androgynville?
  • otto #79 8 years ago

I personally like Jap RPGs, but to say that their graphical style is a breath of fresh air compared to the huge-breasted scantily-clad barbarian pr0n fighter chick of western fantasy games is kind of missing the point. The Japanese style is at least as stereotypical and hackneyed as the western style, if you ask me. All characters look the same, the girls are ever so girly, the lead male is androgynous with stupid hair, and he'll have a tough sidekick and a cute animal sidekick. Don't get me wrong, I love that shit, but it's just as hackneyed.
  • marilena #80 8 years ago

I don't know. You should ask one.
  • Daryoon #81 8 years ago

Am I alone in being the only person who didn't think Vaan was a girl at first? Then again, I didn't think Kuja was a woman either, but these guys are nothing compared to some of the character designs in some anime/manga. Compared to them, Vaan looks like Mr T!

    *lol* good point WS!

I actually liked the trailer for FFXII and consider buying it when it comes out. The characters in (J)RPGs play quite a major role in these games so I suppose that's where the bitching comes from.

The "twist" they took with Yuna in FFX-2 is unforgettable too: "gee, let's rip most of her clothes off and stick two big automatics in her hands". Tomb Raider No. Whatever must've been released in Japan the week the character designers had their brainstorming sessions.

I mostly play JRPGs for the battle systems so I'll shut up about the characters now.
  • aabyssx #89 8 years ago

  • penhalion #90 8 years ago

    Oh gosh.....yawn......

Played all the other FF games but, none come close to good old Cloud and Sephiroth. Even the final blow where you waited sweating for your overdrive guage to fill up as seth just stood there looking like he could kill you with one blow.

That was inspired. No girl to rescue (she was long dead by this point) no romance to get in the way, just two bitter rivals and one final battle...glory or death were the only choices either of them had at that stage in the game.

sigh.....FFXII just looks like another romance quest.

  • Daryoon #94 8 years ago

who the hell was ultimecia anyway (introducing the main badguy/woman at the end spoiled it) and the ending FMV was just confusing telling you next to nothing about what happens

Uh, Ultimecia was there manipulating events from the beginning, and was first mentioned directly at the end of the second disc. And the ending was confusing?

Oh well, if you think Ultimecia popped up out of nowhere, it's no surprise you had trouble understanding things. Why am I even wasting time with this thread anyway?
  • Tweakmonkey #95 8 years ago

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is my favourite. Multiplayer is so much fun, and the olde world setting is excellent.

  • WulfBane #98 7 years ago

Well Stormcrowfleet, your wish may come true in the form of a new game titled "CIRIS CORE":FFVII. Square is working on this game. It's not a remake but it's during FFVII.

Here is an extract from IGN website:Described as an action RPG, this game becomes the fourth entry in the "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII" project which includes Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII for mobile, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children for DVD and Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus for PS2. Production is being overseen by Yoshinori Kitase, the director of the original Final Fantasy VII, with Hajime Tahata serving as director. Tahata and Kitase served similar roles on the development of Before Crisis. Character designs for the game are being handled by Square Enix superstar Tetsuya Nomura. (It's for the PSP and not PS2)

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII seems to be Zack, Cloud's buddy from his days with SOLDIER. In fact, the story seems to take place during that particular time period, pitting both Cloud and Zack against fledgling evil maniac Sephiroth. Tons of sword fighting ensues of course, with Cloud getting smacked around a bit by his old superior. But Zack is no slouch, and he takes on hordes of baddies despite overwhelming odds.

As for FFXII, looks like this game will be released sometime in Q2, as far as the info I read from IGN. Square had spent a lot of time in developing this game and some of the in game architectures are from Europe or based on European designs of old. So you guys should be very flattered that you'll be getting to see some buildings resembling the ones next door.

The game graphics are really good and you won't be seeing anymore random battles, only real time. Some of the ingame graphics do resemble some things from FFXI, we'll just have to wait and see.

FFXII, is scheduled to be released in March 2006 in Japan. I hope they do a parrell import of the English version during the same time, in the US and Asia. Europe and UK always seems to get their games at some later dates after the dust as settled in the states and Asia.

    UPDATE:JAN 30 2006
I got to play the demo, which comes bundled with DQVIII. The demo plays well and the battle system is a far cry from yesteryears. Game graphics - excellent. Can wait for the game to be released.
