Final Fantasy XII HMV launch News

PlayStation 2 News by Robert Purchese

13 February, 2007

London's Oxford Street HMV is hosting another game launch on 23rd February, and this time it's Final Fantasy XII, the next instalment in the immensely-popular JRPG series, which is being celebrated.

The event will run between 12pm and 2pm, and gift wristbands will be given out as early as 9am.

If you snag one of these bands and are one of the first 100 to purchase the game, you'll receive a Moogle soft toy and a CD of five tracks selected by composer Hitoshi Sakimoto.

If you're one of the next 200 people and have a wristband, then you'll also get the limited edition CD, specially put together for the launch event.

All attendees will also have a chance to win a trip to Japan, by entering a free competition.

But it wouldn't be a game launch without a fancy-dress competition, so Square Enix talent spotters will be dishing out freebies to those with the best outfit on the day. What will you dress up as, Eurogamer readers?

And what's more, are you excited about FFXII? We gave it the highest mark imaginable (yes, 28) and couldn't recommend it more, although this probably counts as doing that. You can find our review elsewhere on the site.

It's probably a mark of my addiction to this series that I sniggered at anyone who went to the Burning Crusade launch event, but were I in London on the FFXII release date, then I would BE THERE. FIRST.

Bugger.

HMV seems to have gotten a taste for launches like this. Don't think they realise how much of an exception WoW really is.

Heh. HMV Oxford Street is about 200s yard from where I work. I might pop in at lunchtime for a laugh.

Wait, you're rewarded an extra limited edition CD if you're not among the first 100? Something looks wrong here.

These events are no longer special, more run of the mill.

I dare someone to turn up and buy Halo instead.

Are YOU an angst-ridden teenage nipponophile with the poor fortune to appreciate hacknied cliché ridden storytelling? Are YOU willing to make an idiot of yourself by dressing up as a half-metre Taru or mincing lady-boy swordfighter? Then HMV's Final Fantasy Twelve launch party is for YOU!

I'm very interested in FFXII as it doesn't have the annoying random-battles-every-10-seconds of the old games. I loved the stories and characters of the old games but found the gameplay mechanics a bit clunky and dated so this new one sounds very promising and I'll certainly be picking it up when I buy my PS3 (I've no PS2 you see!).

It's been 5 years since the last proper FF being released in Europe, which is as long as between VII and X - worth a little pomp and circumstance.

You don't have to dress up to get a wristband, you just have to be in the first 300 people, as far as I can tell. I bet dressing-up will help though. Wait, I mean, you MUST dress up or you won't be able to buy the game.

The more outrageous the better, remember that!

Damn, I should've kept the wristband from the MGS: Snake Eater HMV launch. There go my extortionate ebay dreams...

Hold on.. is that the moogle being given away? Bleurg, ugly... not worth queuing up. Thought it was a white moogle of ye olde FF days. Back to work.

It's finally coming out! Hurrah! I have been waiting for ti game since I became an FF whore with FFX. I'm still holding out for a Special Edition, but knowning Square Enix they'll just let America have it 5months earler than us and with a better cover and with the choice of an awesome Special Edition with all kinds of goodies. I mean, what has Europe done to Square Enix? Final Fantasy ois arguably more popular here than in the US, right?
