Square Enix certainly considering it.

Classic PSone title Final Fantasy IX could be getting a re-release as a downloadable game.

That's according to the Square Enix Members Twitter page, as translated by Andriasang. Producer Shinji Hashimoto has recently been asking fans for their feedback, and it turns out there's big demand for the return of the game.

"Thanks to everyone for your opinions on FFIX," Hashimoto wrote. "Regarding an FFIX download release, everyone is so passionate about it that I'll be proposing it at the next board meeting. Look forward to next week!"

Final Fantasy VII and VIII are already available via PlayStation Network, so it makes sense that FFIX should follow. Here's hoping for confirmation soon.

(lol mistake on my part! I mis-read it as FFXIV somehow. It's fine It's fine, I'll take the shame!)

Would also like to add that an FFIX release is actually fantastic news and was probably inevitable.

Good stuff, getting impatient with FFVIII already, damn draw system!

FFIX is up there with the greatest games of all time, Nobuo Uematsu's score is mind blowing (and his fave of the series).

i bought this when it first came out, i remember get so angry becuase i couldn't save the game for the first hour.

I hope they bring out FFX/X-2, i replayed them last summer and they're still amazing games.

yeah id say the only 'draw back' with VIII is its draw system and the fact that all magic and GF's become pointless as normal attacks are much more powerful.

I really liked FF IX at the time, mainly because it had this magical 'wizards and broomsticks' kind of atmosphere. As much as I have enjoyed most Final Fantasy games since (well, save 12), in time I've come to realise that I love FF IX even more as it was the last game in the main series to really scratch that itch for me.

What I'd really like to see on PSN is Xenogears. Twas the best Square RPG ever imo. Only RPG to surpass it for me is Suikoden 2.

Um, what do you think it is that is making your normal attacks so powerful? FF VIII's mechanics had a different emphasis, that's all.

Drawing doesn't have to be boring you should be so powerful as to be able to stick the tv on and hold x even in boss battles for a good way into disk 2.

I'm not going to go evangelical on the story =) As far as the mechanics go though, I agree: its a radically different implementation even considering the systems used in the other games, but the whole thing just clicked with me and made perfect sense.

exept the ps1 version of 6 was rubbish, somehow they managed to make the music sound like it was being played through a nes or something, wheras the snes version has probably the best ff music ever. and there was loads of slowdown in the fights, your better off getting an emulated version.

PSOne/PSN releases are the only thing that keeps me from chucking my PSP2000 in the bin. At the time of release, my angsty teenage self preferred VII and VIII (although neither were a patch on Panzer Dragoon Saga, if only sega could get that fecker out on PSN...), but i find more character and charm on offer from IX these days and look forward to the inevitable release.
