Final Fantasy IX arrives on PSN Store

Plus: PixelJunk Shooter demo! And more!

Final Fantasy IX has been added to the European PlayStation Store and can be downloaded for £8. What's more, this archaic treasure can be played on both PS3 and PSP. The Euro PlayStation blog has pictures and a video.

This week's other PSN content includes shoot-'em-up Sφldner-X 2: Final Prototype and the next episode of the new Sam & Max series. There's a demo for the delicious PixelJunk Shooters up for grabs as well.

There are add-ons for Just Cause 2, Lost Planet 2 and Super Street Fighter IV, plus the controversial multiplayer "entitlement" for UFC Undisputed 2010. Without this you cannot play online; most second-hand copies won't contain the free code.

Two the new Minis - Robin Hood: The Return of Richard, Supermarket Mania - have been detailed on the European PlayStation blog.

Also detailed there are this week's additions to PlayStation Home and the PSP Digital Comics Store.

Yay, I always loved number 9 - just something about the atmosphere and the characters. Not many people hold it as one of their favourites, but it's certainly one of mine :-).

Bought FFIX straight away for my PSP. Easily my favourite final fantasy game of the PS1 era; doesn't take itself too seriously compared to the others.
  • chrisno21 #3 2 years ago

My favourite too, started it last night - wish we had the option for 60hz to remove the damn borders. Superb game.
  • M_of_the_sys #4 2 years ago

    @chrisno21

Can't you do the 'zoom' view in the settings like the other FF games?

Final Fantasy IX was the last FF that didn't take itself too seriously. The plots of subsequent FF games have been a bit pompous and cheesy since then. FFIX wasn't one of my favourites, bit I began to appreciate it more after the series started to decline at the turn of the centuary

You can but its still not as nice as having the proper NTSC picture, especially when the NTSC runs faster too. I'm going to have to hang on for the US release. I actually have the PSone discs for this if I got that desperate though!
  • BritishBlue1 #8 2 years ago

Ooooo, how hip and cool are yoooou? You said the F word!
  • Cadence #9 2 years ago

Hang on, if you play this on the PSP do you also get borders??
  • BritishBlue1 #10 2 years ago

    @Cadence

I bought final fantasy 7 and 8 and I was able to crop the image to fit my PSP; press the Select button when in-game then you can choose to manually fit the picture to the screen so there are no borders. Also I think the picture looks better on my PSP than my 32-inch LCD even though it's a tiny screen. PS1 classics appear to be released mostly in their original form and not remastered for HDTVs.

Yeah, they are effectively the original ISO running through an emulator.
  • andywilkie35 #12 2 years ago

WHAT. This has come from nowhere hasn't it?! I'm about 30 hours into FFVIII, but FFIX is my favourite of all of them :)

    Instadownload tonight

If i had a PSP id buy it. But then again i guess im a Sqenix fanboy. I have games that i havnt even played for more than an hour or 2 (such a Neir).

EDIT: @Andywilkie35 It was commented on about the release at the end of march, its been known for 2 months :)

I'll wait till a couple of reviews say it's awesome, but Soldner X2 looks totally freaking mental.
  • TruSmiles #15 2 years ago

I never played IX, so I'll be downloading it to try. I wish there were more PSOne games though. I heard that Grandia was due on its way sometime, but I already bought Grandia and Wild ARMs from the US Store as I was sick of waiting :/
  • GamesConnoisseur #16 2 years ago

There are some who thinks its better to go for NTSC FFIX over PAL FFIX, but if you are playing via PSP then PAL is best as the borders perfectly suits the widescreen and you can indeed fit it to the whole 16:9 screen.

Alternatively you can custom tinker how you prefers to view the game.

To refamilarise ourselves with Vivi and his tragic but engrossing side story is more than just worthwhile!
  • VicViper #17 2 years ago

    @MaZedong

while I love DJ Max as much as the next guy, imported fever about a year ago when it game out in the US, might be the wrong crowd for that statement.

Anyway my Soldner-X 2 download is hanging weirdly at 91% which is annoying and I'll probally grab FFIX for my PSP eventually.
  • butler` #18 2 years ago

Anyone know if you can transfer old FFIX saves to use?
  • Zoro #19 2 years ago

Ace! Definitely my favorite Final Fantasy. The series would really improve if Square canned that "every single character can learn every singlel ability" nonsense most of them have. Completely destroys the need to try out different characters and combinations.

Probably my 3rd favourite after 7 and 8 and i would download this if didnt already have it on PS1, at 8quid though you cant go wrong on any of the ps1 era FF games as they are just simply fantastic. 9 does have quite a bit more humour compared to the rest which i enjoyed.
  • ShadowMountain #21 2 years ago

This isn't the 60hz NTSC version? In this day and age we still get the 17.5% slower sloppy, boarded PAL version? NOT INTERESTED. Same goes to Nintendo with their mind boggling policy of still offering inferior versions of games.

I'll stick to my NTSC discs on my import ps2 and my NTSC Wii for Virtual console thanks.
  • geeza2020 #22 2 years ago

great news. IMO the third best FF game ever made, after seven and six. Why havent squenix realised that you need your characters to do more than just spout teen angst nonsense and look "moody" in order for the player to care about them?? FFIX had enough comedy and seriousness mixed in for the characters to be believable and likeable. SORT IT OUT!!
  • ZuluHero #23 2 years ago

How does FFIX hold up on our spangly 1080p HDTVs? Does it still look nice?

EDIT: Playing on the PS3 ofc :)

This was the one with Zidane the cat dood (I could look on Google, this is very true) yeah? It was a while ago since I played that last, enjoyed every minute of it. Wasn't it the one with a hidden boss that was just a great big ball? Ahh, happy days when FF games were fun.
  • Cataferal #25 2 years ago

It's a re-release of the PAL version with stuttering FMVs and borders.

    Don't encourage them.
  • dr_faulk #26 2 years ago

Uematsu said 9 was his favourite. I agree. Had a fun atmosphere about it.
  • FenderMaster #27 2 years ago

never played IX, but giving it some serious consideration. great that we get it before the U.S...

but wheres Grandia? I've been waiting for that one for too long...
  • Stomp224 #28 2 years ago

Can someone confirm the size of the FFIX download? I wanna know if I have to buy another mem. stick on the way home!
  • Slipstream #29 2 years ago

FFXI is great, definitely one of the more 'complete' games of the series.

Grandia!? Hell yes, I can't wait for that! They even got Wild ARMs in the US? That's another amazing game. xD Come on Sony!
  • FenderMaster #30 2 years ago

Apparantly FFIX is about 1.56 Gb, smaller than FFVIII
  • jdhaigh #31 2 years ago

    just waiting for FFX now....
  • Gaol #32 2 years ago

The advice on PAL versions fitting the PSP screen better is out of date; a firmware update a while back added custom zoom and stretch options that allow you to get the image the way you want it.
