Wii Vitality Sensor games for E3 2010

Fils-Aime pumped about showing more.

An update on the Wii Vitality Sensor and a first look at its software applications are already part of Nintendo's plans for E3 2010, according to a new interview with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.

Although he offered no more details about the Vitality Sensor, which reads biometric data from a person's finger, the relatively frank interview on Kotaku did offer some insight into Nintendo's other future plans.

Fils-Aime admitted that the company's policy of only starting heavy marketing on new games a few weeks prior to their release has not proven as successful for less mainstream titles.

"I'm not satisfied with the volumes that we do on a Fire Emblem, for example, or a Battalion Wars," Fils-Aime admitted. "These are high-quality games that I have challenged the team to think about: How do we up our marketing on these types of titles to do a more effective job?"

"And I think you are going to see that more with a title like Sin & Punishment 2, where it is much more targeted to the active gamer," he promised. "It is a title that I believe we need to do a better job getting out in front of."

Fils-Aime was also questioned on why Nintendo itself has not announced more support for the Wii MotionPlus peripheral. He confirmed that Nintendo has more compatible games planned, but that the company was also banking on Ubisoft title Red Steel 2 (now delayed until 2010) as being a key release for the add-on.

"That's a title that we had always looked at to be a key part of the strategy to drive the installed base of Wii MotionPlus," said Fils-Aime. "Having said that, even without the benefit of that launch, we've sold over four million at this point in time. That's a very strong start."

E3 2010? Way to late to announce further details...this won't be released til end of 2010 then?

I know we have Mario Galaxy 2...but what else have we got to look forward too before May 2010 then? Kinda need more idea on when games are going to be released Nintendo, otherwise we all think we're going to go through months without a big hitter!

'I love the Fire Emblem series and would love the Wii game, but nowhere sells it less than £30.'

Thats what I was gonna say... but then I checked idealo.co.uk for the cheapest price and found it on Amazon for under £15.

    Yippee.

I'm guessing most people on here won't be buying the Vitality sensor, seeing as most gamers have a resting heart rate of about 300BPM...

How about, you know, actually marketing them?

Why weren't there any announced along with the sensor in first place? Oh, wait, not made yet? well, maybe you should've waited with the sensor unveiling then! You guys said yourself that Nintendo doesn't announce hardware without software so what were you trying to do there?

And I'd rather have them bring over Zangeki no Reginleiv instead of sitting back and hoping that Ubisoft will keep the Motion Plus afloat alone.

They are actually going ahead and releasing this?
I honestly thought this was just a bit of a laugh they were having at E3 last year

Well we'll certainly see lie detectors, brainwave games, atmospheric survival horrors and fitness apps with this. It was announced way too early though.

its only a matter of time before Sony and Microsoft try to copy this...

"Why weren't there any announced along with the sensor in first place? "

I guess it was because of the Wand and Natal, they were scared that they don't even have any new hardware to announce.

A heart rate monitor? Will hardcore gamers complain that they never die?

    >.but what else have we got to look forward too before May 2010 then

    1. all the games that have been released already up to christmas.
    2. Nintendo wont announce games for release next year before xmas.. that'd be stupid wouldnt it? Getting people hyped up about the NEXT lot of games rather than focusing on what's CURRENTLY out there?
    3. Nintendo do actually release more games each year than msoft and sony put together..

Perhaps I'm some kind of stone cold psychopath, but when I'm playing games I don't think my pulse rate changes that much. I'm having fun but it's more cerebral than in the body I reckon. Except maybe Project Zero or Silent Hill... /shudders

Wow - even Easter Island Reggie thinks that the Wii deserves some more 'active gamer' games. And I think he means "less casual gamer", rather than active as in "Let's measure your heart-rate, little man!". This is clearly a step towards the redemption of Nintendo in the eyes of people who think a console is made by constant games releases.

There is even a potential (if small) application for a heart-rate monitor in terms of biofeedback... just imagine if you are playing multiplayer FPS and you can hear the heartbeat of your real-life foe. "Getting scared, are you?" you chuckle as you line up for the headshot. And when they suddenly spasm into a cardiac arrest after losing 50 times in a row, all the while being riled up by slack-jawed American children who know more swear words than tree names, you can actually see this and notify the paramedics.
Also, as you play survival horror, the game can ask you "Why aren't you scared?" and, if you answer that you simply are not shocked at all by the gameplay, the game can put your mother's face on a clown and have her eat babies.

I expect that no more than half of 'people' will do this...!
