FIFA Online open beta begins

Steer club and country to glory.

EA has announced the arrival of FIFA Online's open beta test.

You can register and download the game from the FIFA Online website now.

FIFA Online is part management simulation and part action game. You can buy and sell players and upgrade your team, and you'll earn experience to spend on things like shinpads to boost defense or whistles to boost attack power.

The game will eventually be powered by micro-transactions: elusive items that offer a leg-up in the game but cost real-world money.

FIFA Online can be played in single- and multiplayer, and progress will be charted to offer a comparison with friends.

For now, EA is banging the FIFA World Cup drum and challenging you to win the famous trophy with your country. Can you?

I was in closed beta, it was okay for a free game, using an old fifa engine. Difficult to get used to of course if spoilt with the 360 degree fifa10+ games.

It's fun. They get good points for having games like this and Tiger Woods Online.

In a competative game, player versus player game.

I know what I'll be playing, but I'm downloading it anyway, just to be sure that it's the same old s***.

still, maybe this time we can get the "next-gen" FIFA, after all, FIFA Online can be played by low end machines. I doubt that will happen though, it's too obvious.

So now there is this browser game are they gonna dump FIFA games for poor old PC like they sadly did with Tiger Woods? I Hope not, quite enjoyed FIFA 10 and was sad we didn't get the world cup game!

This is the way forward for pc gaming and it looks horrible!
Free to download and play but everything in the game costs money, this is the publishers trying to stamp out piracy.

I make one payment for a game. That's the price I pay for games and I will never pay more. I refuse to encourage paid-for DLC and micro-payments. Unfortunately too many gamers pander to the industry's greed, and it's making gaming more expensive. Congratulations to gamers who pay for DLC extras for encouraging the industry to act this way and for ultimately increasing the cost of gaming.

Much better than I was expecting. The point-and-click gameplay is actually pretty intuitive and plays quite well, although you don't feel quite as though you're as much the master of your own destiny as with the very hands-on controls of the 360.

Decent effort, and probably a fair bit of longievity too. 7/10

    @Jenson

I think it's a little ridiculous to make a blanket claim such as yours. Surely you can understand the merits of the GTAIV expansions, or Fallout 3's addon packs to name a few examples. They were mostly excellent and were unlikely to have been produced without the DLC mechanisms in place.

Surprisingly fun; shame about the microtransactions aspect in order to progress in online gameplay. I can't see much lasting appeal due to the simplicity of the controls though. It feels like FIFA on rails.

I'll be sticking to FIFA on the 360 and Footy Manager on the PC for now, but it'll be interesting to see what happens if devs can make money off this approach to PC gaming.
