FIFA 09 scores chart top spot

Fastest seller in series. Top 40 inside.

FIFA 09 has scored a number one debut in the UK All-Formats chart this week, becoming the fastest selling instalment ever in the football series.

So popular was the sports game that only GTA IV and Halo 3 flew off shelves quicker on Xbox 360, and only GTA IV on PS3.

The success of FIFA 09, which is rather good actually, pushed Star Wars: The Force Unleashed down to two.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway increased pace to get to three, elbowing or perhaps bayoneting scrawny Wii Fit to four.

Mario Kart Wii raced around in a friendly manner at five - just ahead of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 at six, Wii Play at seven and Big Beach Sports at eight.

Pure, the lively off-road racer from Disney and Black Rock Studio, held in there at nine, and the chart was rounded off by Carnival: Funfair Games at 10.

There were no other new releases of note, although second week sales for Samba de Amigo and Sonic Chronicles got the games entries at 18 and 31, respectively. Super Mario Galaxy reappeared at 21, too, thanks to some retail promotions.

Warhammer Online tumbled down from 13 to 32 this week, which also waves goodbye to Too Human, Crysis Warhead, and both PES 2008 and FIFA 08.

Here's that top 40 in full:

Go FIFA. Thoroughly deserved. Second best game of the year after GTA IV, so nice to see sales reflecting quality.

    Yay for incremental releases....

Bought FIFA 08 & 09 and i must admit the upgrade is worth it, 09 is so much better than 08.

I read the sales split were 42% Xbox and 40% PS3...... useless fact of the day.

Spot on, smelly. What we really need is another ten Mario Party titles to really get the industry's juices flowing.

  • captainrentboy #9 3 years ago

Good to see Pure doing so well against the other huuge releases.
Really enjoying the game, especially online, although I'm kind of ashamed to admit I'm finding it pretty facking difficult to win every event from the sixth championship onwards:/

'so nice to see sales reflecting quality. '

even pap versions get the top spot, its just co-incidence the two happened together.

For once FIFA actually deserves it's success. How odd.
  • bivith #12 3 years ago

Can anyone explain why all the advertising I've seen for this game has only mentioned that it's out on PS2 and PS3 ( including this site, and the woolies advert I saw on TV)?
  • septimus #13 3 years ago

For once well deserved. Really enjoying FIFA for the first time since probably the MegaDrive.

Good to see actual games in the top ten, not crappy Wii mini-game waggleathons.

-Edit- as to advertising, nothing MS didn't do with GTA and nothing EA didn't do with Tiger Woods which was Wii specific 99% of the time on tv.

Probably a Sony supported promotion or something. Remember the GTA IV adverts, all of which were for the 360, same thing I guess.

Having rented Fifa 09 due to all the hype I must say I am thoroughly disappointed. It is in my humble opinion overrated. The game is undoubtedly the best Fifa I've played, but it's so repetitive - dribbling isnt fun and responsive like in PES, passing is just the same as every fifa, but improved slightly due to the thru ball etc.

I despise the power bar - when you're in a tight spot in the centre of midfield and you want to hit a long thru ball you have to wait for the bar to fill up, and you're inevitably tackled.

I think shouts for this being game of the year are quite absurd

I thought the ps3 demo was terrible but the pc demo was good. Controlling the players with the mouse was a bit dodgy though. I'm definitely buying the ps2 version, but its annoying the ps2 version has no online play.

    Rightly so, great game.

    GOTY will be VERY interesting.

@Smelly - Some people just don't get it, and you certainly don't. You obviously don't like football...or sports games judging by countless previous posts. And that's ok, I don't get RPGs...yet I don't go trashing them in every fricken related comments thread.

Anyways, definitely deserved, congrats EA nice to see a footy game EVOLVING ;)

Good on u all 360, ps3 & even ps2 fans. It's worth it. I advise us wii owners to stay clear from it & just stick with PES for now as the wii version is fantastic for the wii (well controls anyway)
