The last entry in the series was in fact Makaimura for the Wonderswan, released in 1999.

Didn't like the original that much, to be honest. And this is fundamentally a remake. I think I'll pass on the modern one too.

2D 3D is the way to go

I disagree. While some games do look pretty whizzy using this technique, most look truly godawful. You need only look at Capcom's own PSP Mega Man remakes for proof of this.

Anyway, really looking forward to this - looks like the summer games drought is over before it's even begun!

Are you implying Maverick Hunter X looks ugly? Well, I'm implying you're blind because honestly, it looks fantastic. Very crisp and colourful.

Talking 2d - 3d, anyone remember Pandemonium? Not the second, but the first. I think it was awesome, and it's one of the very, very few platformers I played straight to the end. They very effectively used changing camera positions. That game deserves some serious kudos.
