FFVII for PS3 is "rumour and speculation"

RPG could be revamped, says report.

Square Enix has refused to comment on "rumour and speculation" that Final Fantasy VII is heading to PS3 in a revised format.

Website PlayStation Lifestyle claims that the widely-adored RPG is being refitted exclusively for the Sony console, citing inside information, but can't say whether it will be on Blu-ray or PSN.

The site also says to expect a separate port of the original FFVII to appear on PSN in 2008, which echoes other unsubstantiated claims from earlier in the year.

We may learn more from the Square Enix Party in Tokyo, which takes place on 2nd and 3rd August.

    FF7-remake rumour number 724.
  • Aretak #2 4 years ago

There've been way more than 724.
  • JediMasterMalik #3 4 years ago

Ok, now I'm excited, wouldn't they normally have outright denied it, I'm sure that's what they did before, so not responding means it's probably coming!

    /premature excitement

Meh.....FFVII was never that good anyway...

Even if this is only a rumour, its only a matter of time before they actually remake it.

Which I hope is soon. I fucking LOVE ffVII.
  • johnnybrn #8 4 years ago

FFVII is best enjoyed with rose tinted glasses much like Tomb Raider and Wipeout. All had their day but dated in todays gaming market.
  • Darknight #9 4 years ago

I'm refusing to hold my breath on this one... These rumors have been going 'round for far too long for me to have any faith in them.
  • Tweakmonkey #10 4 years ago

Is it cool to slag of FFVII now? At the time it was a mega hit and I would welcome a re-release.
  • Darknight #11 4 years ago

    @johnnybrn

Agreed, but if they remake it properly (see TR:A) then it could be brilliant.

    /still not holding breath
  • Turambar #12 4 years ago

Every few months some douchebag posts this rumour to his douchey blog with the sole purpose of generating page hits.
  • koji_m #13 4 years ago

well if there's a time for FFVII HD remake rumors exclusive to the PS3....

    that time is NOW :D
  • Aretak #14 4 years ago

"Is it cool to slag of FFVII now?"

It's been that way for a good few years now. Didn't you get the memo?
  • Killerbee #15 4 years ago

To be fair FFVII is pretty much the only game I'd actually consider buying again for a next-gen remake. It'd be awesome if Square Enix did do it (and I'm sure it'd make them a lot of money too), but I'm not holding my breath.
  • Steroyd #16 4 years ago

I will be surprised if SE DON'T re-make FFVII - IX to some degree (wether it's a DS-esque PSN type re-make or a full blown retail re-make) at this point.

Especially with the likes of FFIII and FFIV DS coming out of the pipeline... >_>
  • Widge #17 4 years ago

Surely it'd be a license for Square to print money... you'd think they'd jump right on it.
  • DFawkes #18 4 years ago

I don't care if it's rumour, time to make it fact. They know it'll sell by the bucketload, even with minimal effort. I don't see why a games company wouldn't produce a dead cert like this.

I still love FFVII. Every few years, I wonder if it's really as good as I remember and buy it again, and it seems to get better every time! I know some think it's rose-tinded specs, since it was among the first really popular JRPGs, but I still enjoy it. The excellent music (which I could understand others hating, but I love it), the ATB and Mataria systems, the Characters, the whole world map, the story... I love it all.
  • Schiraman #19 4 years ago

Hmm. I have mixed feelings about the whole idea of a FF7 remake.

On the one hand, it was a great game in its day - but on the other hand it's now very dated.

So I think the question is, how do you update it without losing the things that fans love and remember? Even if SE do decide to produce a remake, it's very much a two-edged sword for them - they're bound to suffer a lot of backlash no matter how they handle it. My guess is that this is exactly why we've seen them constantly skirting around the edges of the franchise - producing spin-off games rather than ever touching a direct re-make.
  • vapour #20 4 years ago

A remake is inevitable, but i don't think they will announce it just yet. If they really wanted to do it, it would have made sense to do it with Adevnt Children, Dirge and Crisis Core - but those were quite spread out, so maybe they don't have any sense!
  • PinkSpider #21 4 years ago

Argh, crap. With XIII on the 360 I thought I could ignore the PS3 until it was a bargain :/
  • monkie_king #22 4 years ago

Why is it that this would supposedly be a big hit?
  • Asundai #23 4 years ago

There will be a remake yeah, it's just a matter of time. They've already remade a bunch of the FF's no one cares about so i can't see them ignoring the potential profit they'd get from remaking their most popular title.
  • JonFE #24 4 years ago

I can't wait to see the long faces when a FF7 remake IS officially announced...

    ...for the x360 :-)

I'd love it if they re-did FFVII for PSP using the resources from Crisis Core. They've already got Midgar and Nibelheim and a good collection of outdoorsy places, I'm sure it wouldn't be that difficult. The characters are mostly all there too.

As with CC, a lot of the pre-rendered cutscenes could be done with the game engine so it could fit on one UMD.

For anyone thinking that replaying FFVII is a bad idea, I agree. Imagine what a remake would be like though... In fact you don't even need to imagine it, just look at Tomb Raider Anniversary.
  • Doctor_What #26 4 years ago

Who cares? I want a Soul Reaver remake! :D
  • johnnybrn #27 4 years ago

    evilfoxhound,

'Oh, and as for the rose-tinted shades comments. I still play FFVII to this day and it's still better then 90% of modern games on the market.'

Like you said to me yesterday, that because you're a fanboy
  • PinkSpider #28 4 years ago

    +1

I've replayed it on average once every two years and the graphics are adequate, the art style however is pretty darn good and I just love it.

(Not my first jrpg ever, FF8 was which I dont like as much).

+1 to Doctor What, I'm still stunned the PSone did real-time morphing between realms in Soul Reaver. I'd even go as far to say I'd rather have that than a FFVII remake. Yeah, I said it.
  • steoc4 #31 4 years ago

I've replayed it quite a few times, most recently about a year ago, and it still holds up very well, something that can be said of very very few other games from its era.

Square would be crazy not to bring out a remake, but I'm not going to hold my breath either. They only have so many resources and they have a lot of other projects on the go at the moment. It seems more likely to me that this is something they'd work on after FFXIII is released.
  • Stuz359 #32 4 years ago

I only played it through fully a couple of months ago and it is one of the best RPG's of all time. I would love to see a remake, but the resources to do it would be almost as much as a brand new FF game. They would make their money back and a shitlod more though
  • Widge #33 4 years ago

Oh god, I loved Soul Reaver... they should mash the trilogy into one massive installment of the game. People think MGS4 is quite talky, I think there is a good 30 mins of dialogue at the start of Soul Reaver 2 before you get to really do anything. I loved it all though!

I'd like FFVII to be updated, mainly because the only way I get to play it is using CFW at the moment on the PSP... I don't have TV Out leads either so no big screen action.
  • septimus #34 4 years ago

Please be true. Definitely in my top 10 and I would love to play it again with a graphical update (and re-sampled audio to please, the soundtrack was excellent0.
  • Darren #35 4 years ago

FFVII was a great game back in "its day" but things have moved on and unless this game is revamped and remade properly to current day standards for the PS3 I have no interest in playing through the dated original again, thank you.
  • DFawkes #36 4 years ago

It hasn't really dateeed relatively speaking, since most JRPGs have stuck ridgidly with the same formula, like Elemental Arms or Blue Dragon. Although I think this is more to do with JRPGs being generally behind the times than FFVII being timeless. As long as there's plenty of choice for fans of JRPGS or action RPGs, it can only be a good thing.

I would be interested in having the game world padded out a bit, and perhaps some additional side quest-y things for later in the game. Because the aquisition of your team happens so gradually over the lengthy first disc, you barely get any time once you've finally got them all together before going on your assault on the Northern Crater. As a result, you end up spending hours running in a figure of 8 in the underwater plane levelling up things like 4xCUT with its shocking amount of AP.

So yes, perhaps some additional taskage in the 2nd half of the game.

So many areas could be expanded on so well in the game, think about all the arcade sections in the Gold Saucer, revamped bike chase, snowboarding, "Speed" rollercoaster etc. in fact, imagine if they dumped a bit of online into that world. Submarine game could be a jape with a bunch of people sailing around torp-ing each other, multiplayer snowboarding.

Then there was the RTS condor defence section, elaborate that into something a bit more dramatic and in depth (I managed to win each round using the same technique really... one of each type of troop at 3 choke points, all standing on the same point = win).

I'd demand they leave the line "This guy are sick" in there though.
  • JediMasterMalik #39 4 years ago

@chris_ace - You may argue that it's an inferior game, but to say it hasn't moved on is incredibly short sighted considering how different FFXII was to it's predecessors.
  • FladgeMangle #40 4 years ago

Who said Soul Reaver? SSSSSSSOUL RRRRRREAVER!!!

More freedom to do what you wanted, FF7 literally was the straight line from beginning to end with no deviation (not that I'm complaining), FF12 felt like that the game had gone from looking 3D in FFX, into being a proper 3D world.
  • JediMasterMalik #43 4 years ago

Yes, that's one of the sstems that has changed, as to whether it's better, that's completely subjective. I think it could have been better if it was some what more evolved.
  • Widge #44 4 years ago

It could have been better if when you decided to get back onto the storyline, it was more involving and exciting. As I've also mentioned before, I didn't like its move back to not having job classes for different characters.

Freedom worked well though, I had to go from the forest place to the mountain place and somehow, rather than take the direct route, I'd managed to take a winding route that took me through some foggy place where just about every creature inside was thoroughly WHOMPING my team and I scrapped away for my life. I liked that. Whereas the FF7 first disc was literally like a straight line tour of the world. Midgar -> Kalm -> Junon -> Gold Saucer -> Gongaga -> Nibelheim -> Rocket Town.... and then you finally get a bit of choice about destination when the Tiny Bronco is in your possession.

Yeah, more sidetracking in FF7 would be nice, there were literally no rewards for hunting around in towns or on the map, although I'd want to see this tempered against the way that SE have been putting ESP treasures in their games.... where you have to actually have a mental link with the devs to know that they're there and exist, like the FFX2 ultimate costumes and FFXII's "do not open certain chests" things.
  • adman123 #45 4 years ago

    please...this would be magnificant
  • FenderMaster #46 4 years ago

i liked FFVII, but i dont know if i'd be bothered buying the remake
  • VMerken #47 4 years ago

How about remaking Vagrant Story and giving us the full story, the way it was supposed to be?

Now that'd be nice. Mind you, remaking FFVII is nice too, but then it'd really need to contain new elements, kind of
like the Resident Evil remake on Gamecube. Don't copy the game system please, because we've all seen and broken
it for over ten years now.

Well, at least put in a skip button for the Summons, you know what I'm talking about, Squaresoft *wink*

"Is it cool to slag of FFVII now? At the time it was a mega hit and I would welcome a re-release. "

Probably just an increase in people who don't know what they are talking about but feel urged to talk anyway. I would love to have an exclusive remake of FF7 for PS3.
  • Arwin #49 4 years ago

My prediction (ok, 1up's): Advent Children BluRay comes with FFVII remake. Or something.
  • Nikanoru #50 4 years ago

    Fuck please no.

Am I the only one who wants a sequel -game- to FF7? Surely I can't be the only one.

And what do I fucking get? Ten different spinoffs, one lame ass FMV that's supposed to be a sequel, and now possibly a fucking remake? WHY do they use all that manpower for exactly everything that I DON'T want?
  • Lymmusic #51 4 years ago

check out the square enix site...in the final fantasy section there's no listing for ff7...... why would that be missing?
  • Rek #52 4 years ago

Would prefer a VI remake (3-D, remastered soundtrack, the works, etc..) for the next-gen consoles. Would be awesome.

Altho its probably coming to the DS ala IV-DS.
  • timberwolf #53 4 years ago

cool. if we are talking ffx, i literally just finished it again today. (i'm working through the series from 7 - 12 on ps3 emulator. i found 9 the most fun too, really struggled with ffx again... i hated it when it came out for lots of reasons (sphere grid, blitz ball, weapon and armour without stats and the weird 3 tiered unlock with the celestial mirror and sigils and crests is a pain.) ffx really gets great when you get into hour 100 though, and i found myself enjoying it. *shock* No other final fantasy gives you the same feeling when you customize 7 pieces of ribbon armour. fun in a very very sadistic kinda way.
