FFIV for DS

SNES classic revamped.

Square Enix revealed at last weekend's 2007 party in Japan that it would be resurrecting Final Fantasy IV for DS.

It'll be handled by the same team that brought FFIII to life on the handheld, once again boasting fresh cut-scenes, better graphics and redesigned monsters. The characters will also get an overhaul, recreated as taller sprites allowing greater detail to be added.

Developer MATRIX is keen to expand and deepen the storyline, but also promises that it will keep the feel and authenticity of the 1991 original.

No date has been set for the game. But keep an eye on the Japanese website for any more shreds of information.

Final Fantasy III was released on DS at the beginning of the month to an average reception. It was probably the best looking game we've seen on the handheld to date, but underneath was gameplay from 16 years-ago that's since been vastly improved upon. Catch-22, you might say.

Square-Enix are the kings of remakes at the moment.

    Shocking!

    Never saw that coming... ;)

Square-Enix are the kings of turd polishing at the moment.

Actually that is unfair, I like a lot of their games but FFIII needed game mechanics updating as well as visuals.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but considering how much effort went into redoing the graphics on FFIII for the DS, wouldn't it have been almost as easy to make a completely new game?

Just remake VI again and get it over with. Yes, I know its available on the GBA (and therefore DS) but a full re-vamp of the graphics would push it into the realms of its immediate sucessor.

    The realm of monkey feces?

And people wonder why there aren't any FF games on VC, becuase you people keep buying them at full price!

Oh come on, there's only one Final Fantasy game people REALLY want a remake of and it's definitely NOT wanted on DS.

Jeez if you read the title for the first time fast enough I could have swore it said FFVI.

FFVI is the only one I have any interest in playing, mainly because I never wanted to (/didn't have enough money) to blow £60 on the USA import back in the day. With the honourable exception of the Megaman X games, I never seem to be able to work through games on emulators (not that I ever would, mind, what with it being high piracy and whatnot).

A remake of FFVII on the DS would awesome! Doubt its possible though with cartridge sizes...but we can dream...
  • jimmyjimbob #12 5 years ago

Cool, this was by far and away the best of the early FF games.

If they put a save feature in the fucking dungeons this time, I'm there.

Will someone hurry up and remake a decent RPG for DS already?
    Like Fallout, or Diablo.

I played a friends' GBA version of this for a couple of hours on a lost weekend. I remember enjoying it quite a bit, even though I was confused by the ATB system at first. It seemed out of place somehow. Never bought it for myself but I actually do fancy a DS remake with FFIII-style graphics.

Now, whether or not to buy FFV and VI on GBA, or wait until confirmation of the likely DS versions...

i would love to see 6 remade but it would probably take at least 4 more years to come out with the pace S-E works

it would, yes, but it wouldn't sell as much. unfortunate, but that's the way things are.

and i'm not a huge fan of these remakes in general, either. DS 3D looks like PS1 3D, and PS1 3D looks like arse. personally I would have preferred a 2D version of III with SNES-level graphics on the GBA.

    Pretty please?

Going off on a tangent here but, why is it that Nintendo didn't employ flash memory for their DS game cartridges? Was it still too expensive when the DS was being initially conceived? Too easily hackable and Nintendo prefers proprietary stuff? It can't be tech limitations in flash memory surely - you'd only be reading data from the flash memory which doesn't effect the limited write/rewrite cycles. Using flash memory would let 'em fit FFVII easily on the DS.

FFIII's remake graphical style so doesn't fit FFIV's story it's not even funny. They're making Cecil look 8 years old or something... awkward!

I'd love to see a brand new FF game appearing on the DS, and not just a spin-off; a proper SNES style RPG with new advancement and customisation systems.

Thankfully, FF4 is the only SNES one that I haven't really played, so this is something to look forward to.

Unbelievable! They announce this when I'm halfway through the GBA version!

    Don't tease me like that!

    *gurgle*

  • smelly #24 5 years ago

I never played ANY FF game before FF7.

So im all for the remakes.
  • dudefella #25 5 years ago

"Unbelievable! They announce this when I'm halfway through the GBA version!"

Hey man, at least you didn't BUY the game two days before this anouncement... yeah.
  • paul_haine #26 5 years ago

I tried FF4 on the GBA a while ago but couldn't get into it and kept getting fecked off by all the random battles. I did just buy FF5 and FF6 though...so now I'm wondering if I should play these or wait for a shinier DS version. Hmm.
  • thefilthandthefury #27 5 years ago

Can't wait for this. FF III is easily my favourite DS game (and one of my favourite games all-round) so I'm hoping for some similar treatment here.
  • HalfMillennium #28 5 years ago

Hmm...if it's a remake of the GBA version, it'll be a remake of what was already a remake. Look out Super Mario Advance, competition ahoy!
