FF Tactics date solidified

Start of October.

Square Enix has roared that Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions will be in Euro shops on 5th October.

It's the PSP update of the turn-based game originally made famous on the PSone, with spruced up graphics and audio, as well as some other new bits and pieces.

You'll be able to play co-operatively with a friend, for example, or battle against them if you don't actually like them but can't say it in real life. There's a new character to recruit, too - old girly features Balthier from FFXII.

We had a chance to play it at the Square Enix party in Japan earlier this year, where we were suitably impressed. Tactics was one of our favourite games, you see, and we liked the way it has been faithfully recreated for the PSP.

Pop over to our first impressions of Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions to find out more.

Umm, wasn't Cloud in the original?

Oh yes, so he was. Am sorry will lash self.

I didn't really get on with FFT:Advance on the GBA - is this significantly different?
  • Venkman90 #5 4 years ago

    DS version news please :o
  • 5lectro #6 4 years ago

I loved the original, but the GBA one is the worst chore I've ever forced myself through.
  • Flabio #7 4 years ago

It's a much harder game than the GBA one is. Although they have fixed some of the more painful difficulty spikes in this version apparently.
  • Steroyd #8 4 years ago

awe shoot, I have absolutely no money that month, it's all dedicated to a certain Pro Evo game.

Hopefully this ends up like other PSP games and goes cheap fast.

Finally! A good reason to buy a PSP.

    Indeed. About time, you'd say...

    £17.99 not good enough? :p
  • viper_h #12 4 years ago

another re-release? is that all SquEnix can do now?

If you're going to resurrect old stuff, bring back FF7!
  • vapour #13 4 years ago

Not a remake as this never got a Euro release in the PS1 days. We're getting it a week before the US too!

    Awsome!

My PSP might ACTUALLY get some use!!!
  • Waffleaber #18 4 years ago

I actually really liked the GBA tactics, although the "send the characters off on their own" missions were pointless.

Be good to play the original to see if the GBA version is worthy of the bile spewn at it by the hardcore PSOne tactics fans.
  • smurphs #19 4 years ago

    @Killerbee

FF Tactics is totally different from the GBA version. It has a 'proper' dramatic storyline, although you have to pay attention if you want to keep up. The action is much harder than Tactics Advanced, and the emphasis is on learning new skills/spells, which becomes very compelling as you unlock new classes at the same time.

The battles are not as tactical as you might think, winning is mostly about picking the right class for the job and making sure you have the right spells & skills at your disposal (I thought the tactics in Battle Ogre on GBA were better).

All in all an awesome game, though once you've unlocked the best skills it can get a touch repetitive, but the story keeps you going.

    Hope this helps :)

Have they fixed the laughable translation found in the PS1 original ?
  • JediMasterMalik #22 4 years ago

It's meant to be getting as proper translation, yeah.
  • Murbal #23 4 years ago

Argh! I preordered and didn't think it was that soon! I'll get back from hols and then it'll be around the corner! Oh well, can't afford 2 games next month so no SEGA rally for me :-(
  • Murbal #24 4 years ago

Plus if I had a pound for the amount of times I've heard 'finally a reason to buy/get out the PSP' I'd be a rich man.

The console has an awesome line-up.
  • Waffleaber #25 4 years ago

"The console has an awesome line-up"

It has, and if it wasn't also available on the PS2 (bar Locoroco) the quality would be more noticable.
  • dirigiblebill #26 4 years ago

Jesus, let's just get through one comments thread without the usual (highly unjustified) PSP hate, eh?

I've just got Jeanne D'Arc, so I'm on a bit of a roll with the old SRPGs at the moment. Seem to be plenty on the way for both handhelds. Good times.
  • Les #27 4 years ago

"It has, and if it wasn't also available on the PS2 (bar Locoroco) the quality would be more noticable."

Exactly. Unlike the DS, the PSP is a home console in portable form. Too few short, quirky games. Coupled with short battery life it's been a clear "no buy" for me. However, with the improved battery life and PS3 remote play, it’s becoming a more attractive option to me.

But if you don’t have a PS2 it’s a good alternative (as long as you don’t expect to play if on the road too much).
  • dirigiblebill #28 4 years ago

So if you want to play shorter, quirkier games on the go, the DS is your man. If you want a more intensive, fully-fledged experience, go with the PSP. Everybody happy now? Bar the ignorant bloke who thinks it only plays PS2 ports, I mean.

I've heard FFT has a pretty convoluted storyline. Is this true?
  • Cheapshot #29 4 years ago

Poor PSP, great games left, right and centre and still all the moaning.

The fact that it will allows me to play Vagrant Story and stuff like Brave Story on the train to work everyday makes it the best handheld console in the world in my book. I'd rather play proper, fully fledged games on the move anyday... the consoles' sleep mode makes any game no matter how big fine for portabilty. :-)
  • Waffleaber #30 4 years ago

"Bar the ignorant bloke who thinks it only plays PS2 ports, I mean"

That aimed at me? It wasn't a swipe at the PSP just the fact that the best games are available elsewhere (WipEout, Tekken, Ridge Racer, GTA, Pro Evo, Virtua Tennis)

I own both a PSP and a PS2 and when I have a choice between versions i'll pick the dual analogue, full screen, multiplayer version everytime thank you. Except for the Mega Drive collection, that's pure on-the-go goodness.

Anyway back to the original post this game sounds good so i'll probably pick it up.

Perhaps you should have stuck with the likes of Lumines, Brave Story, Crush, Mercury, Killzone Liberation, Portable Ops and Exit, then? All excellent, all exclusive.

EDIT- except Mercury, in recent times. Dang. Try Dead Head Fred, then, or Daxter.

Sorry to be catty, it just puts my back up the way people whinge about the system whenever a PSP game comments thread appears.

  • HiddenAway #32 4 years ago

Exit is also not exclusive. Got announced for the DS a few weeks ago and I think it's been announced for the XBLA too.

I hope they fixed the slowdown issues (maybe the Slim & Lite's expanded memory will help?). However, I've been looking forward to this so much (had a chance to play the original back in the day and it's just so damn awesome) that I'll get it regardless =).
  • Number1Laing #35 4 years ago

Gah, for once I am jealous of you guys in England. I am taking a coast-to-coast vacation from 10/04-10/08, and was dismayed to find out I couldn't pick up FFT for the plane rides.
  • manic_mouse #36 4 years ago

    "Too few short, quirky games."

Which is exactly why I have a PSP and not a DS.
