Far Cry 2 to get new Hardcore mode News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Ellie Gibson

9 February, 2009

Ubisoft is planning to introduce a new "hardcore mode" for Far Cry 2 following requests from fans.

Posting on the Ubi forums, community developer Atmon wrote, "A lot of questions have been raised on the forums about a hardcore mode feature. Today we are happy to confirm that you will be able to enjoy this new mode on all platforms with our next wave of patches.

"The hardcore mode has been designed as an answer to a community request," Atmon continued. "When designing the multiplayer game our team wanted to provide a balanced experience for most gamers. However some players were seeking and expecting a more realistic experience."

Hardcore mode will apply a new damage model, which means increased damage for all weapons. Enemy names will disappear after the spawning invincibility period ends, and a new option will let you tweak spawing time (though not rate). Plus, you'll be able to search for hardcore mode multiplayer matches.

"We hope that you will like the changes our team has implemented to let you enjoy the game, and play it the way you want," Atmon concluded.

Far Cry 2 is out now on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. If you've yet to give it a go, read our review for the full lowdown.

Have they addressed any of the issues that made the single player experience so dire? The constantly respawning enemies at checkpoints? The never-ending schlepping from one side of the map to the other?

FC2 was an almost great game rendered near unplayable by a few moronic design decisions - presumably intended to extend the length of the game and therefore add 'value'.

Not too keen on that advert slap bang under the article there.

I just bought FC2 on 360 recently, found it rather underwhelming to say the least.

Which one? The SF IV or the Nokia ad? (They're randomish you know).

I still have Far Cry 2 installed in the vague hope that they'll some day release a patch that lessens the enemy respawning in checkpoints and make civilians stop attacking you in their little yellow rust-buckets..

Far Cry 2 wiped all four of my saved games at 92% completion. Will they fix this in the patch? I think not. Fuck them.

I think that's more likely to come from mod-makers rather than official sources. But yes, I'm waiting for the same thing too.

I too left it installed in that same vague hope. We should start a club. ;)

They listen to the small number of players who want to make it more difficult and ignore the ground swell of opinion about the stupid check points respawning.

... or they dressed this up as a community update when in fact it isnt. Marketing suits alert!

Community request?

What, like removing the fucking checkpoints and the brain-numbingly dumb idea of having a gun jam during a gunfight, even when you've picked the gun off a man who'se been happily shooting the shit out of you for the past ten minutes and then *immediately bloody jams* when you use it.

But no, hardcore mode. That's what we all want. Of course.

I'm glad to see it wasn't just me then.

Actually, I already knew it wasn't just me, but it's always nice to see it reaffirmed once more. :)

Are any of the devs taking notice?

It was never very likely that they would release an update that made major changes to the core single player game, no matter how much of an out (far)cry there was about it.

The SFIV one. Not a massive problem, but it's another advert on a ad ridden page. The article is almost lost in the middle somewhere.

Just fix the sluggy and unresponsive controls on the console version so I might actually play this online.
I mean.. it has a killer level editor.. but the controls online.. are %$#@ ... like your arms are tied with rubber bands or something. Come on guys.. just look at other succesfull shooters .. then maybe a harcore mode is actually usefull.
