Fallout 3 add-ons bundled for retail News

PC Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

27 April, 2009

A source close to Bethesda has told Eurogamer that Fallout 3 add-ons Operation: Anchorage and The Pitt will be bundled together and sold at retail.

Our top secret source couldn't confirm a date or price for the PC and 360 packs, but Amazon reckons 29th May for GBP 14.99.

Operation: Anchorage and The Pitt are both already available to download for 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60) each, which makes the retail package a little pricier. But then there's packaging to think of, and the pretty picture on the front and what about the manual labour.

Operation: Anchorage takes players through a military simulation program that occurs before the nuclear apocalypse that dominates Fallout 3. A bit naff, thought we.

The Pitt, on the other hand, opens Pittsburgh for exploration and has players making tricky allegiance decisions as they choose who to fight for. This we liked.

Incidentally, our source didn't say whether Broken Steel - the third lump of DLC - would be offered at retail. We can't imagine it won't.

Excellent news. Hopefully the triple pack will be offered quite soon after Broken Steel is released. And for a fairly reasonable price. Can't not see play or amazon knocking a few pounds off the price anyway.

Odd choice of pricing, but otherwise OK I guess.

Back to the good old days of proper expansion packs, much better.

Surely Broken Steel will be included. I've avoided the DLC so far but will buy all 3 if it's around 15quid!

£15 for all 3? I wouldnt be surprised if they released Broken Steel on its own for £15.. its seems odd that they would leave it out of the bundle otherwise...

Would be nice if they released them for the PS3 like this. Should be ok as its not DLC just an expansion pack

Truly silly choice if there isn't the newest addon included...

I’m sure it’s just the "C" bit that is the important bit for exclusivity? The "DL" is just the delivery method? Otherwise that’s a pretty major loophole?

This is good news because although it may be more expensive at launch traditionally retail prices do things DLC prices don't, like vary and get tend to drop over time, plus I really just object to using microsofts funny money.

£15 quid doesn't suggest Broken Steel would be included, but then I'd prefer to buy Anchorage and The Pitt like this, then sell them once I'm done. Will be cheaper in the long run. That Broken Steel isn't standalone makes it more worth holding on to. Still, there should be a Fallout 3+ all three DLCs bundle. Maybe they're saving that for when there's even more DLC...

Might be worth waiting for a 'game of the year' edition which will have everything

@thesombrerokid - How will they get around it? They'll surely be on disc.

Am wondering about the phrasing of the DLC exclusivity contract... Technically, with a retail package it's not DLC anymore. But I'm pretty sure MS's lawyers were smart enough to rule out a PS3 retail scenario as well.

I'm waiting until all three (or more) come as a whole before taking the plunge.
Gives me a nice healthy gap for me to play other games in the meantime.

Good. I wish more publishers made DLC available in hard copy.

that kinda defeats the purpose of DLC though doesn't it? The whole point of digital distribution is to have less overheads and stuff...

Depends on how you look at it. Given the current buying tendencies of gamers, a mixed channel strategy apparently is beneficial. And if the DLC is developed already, additional cost for the retail version is basically the cost of the disc, case and manual. If they manage to sell it for more than that cost, they make additional profit.

@midnight_walker: Could be a code-in-a-box, like the points cards, or Amazon's recent XBLA thing.

Yes you can sell them. Or at least you could with Shivering Isles for Oblivion.

Buy, install, give to all your mates to repeat.

With the PC version of Fallout 3 didn't you have to tie the product key into a Live account? It's been a while since I've installed it so I don't fully remember.

Ever the optimist I hope someday these add-ons make their way to the Playstation 3. I keep telling myself to "man up" about it but sadly look on with envious eyes.

Akin to your Fallout 3 review, then?

Anyone who gets paid to review games and reckons Fallout 3 is 10/10 deserves an immediate anal rape from John Prescott.

Don't worry, Operation Wankorage is worth it for the gauss rifle alone. One shot, one old-skool sci fi kill.
