Eye On '07: PlayStation 3
What you'll be wanting when (if?) it gets here.
Continuing our whirlwind tour of the gaming delights which are in store for us in 2007, our next stop is that most contentious of platforms - the PlayStation 3. While it'll only be in Europe for three quarters of the year at most, and it's largely accepted that the first year of any console's life is generally a somewhat sparse one on the software front, a quick scan of the release schedules shows that PS3 actually has some very interesting prospects ahead of it this year. It may not be able to match the full head of steam that the Xbox 360 has built up just yet, but if Sony can deliver some of the headline titles on this list on schedule, the PS3's hefty price tag might start looking a little more palatable.
Eurogamer's Top Picks
Assassin's Creed
- Developer: Ubisoft Montreal;
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- Also Available On: PC, X360
- Gamepage
The latest creation from the studio that reinvigorated Prince of Persia is one of the most hotly anticipated titles for the PS3, and for good reason. Early demonstrations have shown stunningly realistic combat and movement, adaptive AI which sees entire crowds reacting intelligently to your actions, and the kind of freedom of choice which gamers have dreamed about for years.

The premise of the game seemingly sees you carrying out a number of assassinations, keeping your wits about you as you take into account factors like the reaction of civilians which have never really had an effect on gameplay in the past - but the presence of a futuristic HUD at the end of an E3 video, and comments from one of the voice actresses involved with the game, suggest that there's more to the plot than meets the eye. Originally announced as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, the decision to make Assassin's Creed available on Xbox 360 and PC as well has been welcomed by gamers, even if it's unlikely to make for many happy faces at Sony.
Grand Theft Auto IV

- Developer: Rockstar North;
- Publisher: Rockstar Games
- Also Available On: X360
- Gamepage
Although it's the first Grand Theft Auto game since the series exploded into 3D with GTA3 not to launch exclusively on a Sony platform, there's still no overstating just how important Rockstar North's next effort is to the PlayStation 3. Microsoft's coup in getting a simultaneous launch on Xbox 360 is significant, of course, but to the mass market GTA is synonymous with PlayStation, and many will make their decision on whether to invest in the next-gen this year on just how much of a must-have GTAIV actually is. October will tell all; for now, we're utterly in the dark. Everyone knows how Grand Theft Auto plays, but pondering over what Rockstar North is going to do with the graphical and processing prowess of the next-gen consoles is nothing but pure speculation. The one thing we do know - if this strikes the same kind of chord that previous iterations of the series have, GTAIV could be the biggest game of the year.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

- Developer: Kojima Productions;
- Publisher: Konami
- PlayStation 3 Exclusive
- Gamepage
Five years have changed nothing; Hideo Kojima still has the power to wow us, and Metal Gear Solid still has the power to sell consoles. Just as the stunning trailers for Metal Gear Solid 2 made gamers' jaws drop and sold god knows how many PS2s before the (arguably lukewarm) game actually appeared, Metal Gear Solid 4 is already convincing plenty of people that they want a PS3. We're sure that Kojima's legendary affection for enormous cut-scenes, convoluted plots and unexpected philosophical dissertations hasn't diminished, but equally, early glimpses of how MGS4 plays show a promising evolution of MGS' enjoyable combination of action and stealth. Assuming it remains PS3 exclusive - and bear in mind that after a flirtation with the Xbox with MGS2: Substance, Kojima Productions chose to withdraw from Microsoft's platform when it released MGS3: Subsistence - and assuming that the team actually finish it in time for a 2007 release, this could be exactly the title that the PS3 needs to justify some of Sony's wilder next-gen claims.
Singstar

- Developer: SCEE Team Soho;
- Publisher: SCEE
- PlayStation 3 Exclusive
- Gamepage
... And with that, half a million hardcore gamer eyebrows made a leap for the ceiling. We're not kidding, though - ever since it was first demoed at GDC last February, Singstar has been very near the top of our most-wanted list for the PlayStation 3. The more we hear about it, the more it sounds like a killer app; selling it as a service (you pay for each karaoke video you download, and you can just watch them as music videos if you like, too) means you can build your own preferred compilation of tracks with no dross you don't want, and opens the possibility of countless tracks that would never have been popular enough to make it onto a Singstar disc compilation becoming available at last. The possibilities opened up by being able to share videos of your performances over the Internet intrigue us, as you'd expect from the YouTube Generation - and it's just down-the-pub speculation as yet, but if Sony does fancy using Bluetooth wireless microphones this time, count us in. After all, the most popular console in many households will always be the one that goes best with a bottle of vodka or a six-pack.
White Knight Story

- Developer: Level 5;
- Publisher: SCEI
- PlayStation 3 Exclusive
- Gamepage
Whatever other problems Sony may have had in 2006 - and by god, there were plenty of them - the PS3's showing at the Tokyo Games Show was nonetheless a high point. However, the games which impressed us were games which would be expected to do so - MGS, Final Fantasy, Ridge Racer, Devil May Cry, all big Sony-centric franchises which are meant to be the bread and butter of PlayStation. The one game which genuinely came out of left field and caught our imagination was White Knight Story - a previously unknown title from acclaimed RPG developer Level 5. Astonishing graphics and superb artwork are to be expected from any next-gen title that fancies its chances at being triple-A; what really stood out about White Knight Story's trailer was an extraordinary battle system which rewards proper use of offensive and defensive sword fighting strategy. The ability to summon a fearsome mech and pilot it in battle doesn't hurt, either. Many will dismiss White Knight Story as being just another JRPG, which is fair enough - but for plenty of gamers, a truly top notch JRPG is a compelling reason to buy into a console platform.
Honourable Mentions
Here's a quick look at everything else that's on the way...
Alone in the Dark
- Developer: Eden Games;
- Publisher: Atari
- Also Available On: PC, Xbox 360
- Gamepage
The venerable franchise that launched the survival horror genre returns on next-generation consoles - and while the likes of Resident Evil and Silent Hill have overshadowed Alone in the Dark in recent years, early looks at this update to the series suggest that its fantastic atmosphere and focus on short, tightly plotted episodes may well propel it back to the cutting edge of videogame horror.
Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway

- Developer: Gearbox;
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- Also Available On: PC, Xbox 360
- Gamepage
In the crowded World War II shooter market, Brothers In Arms stands out not just for its tactical nature - where commanding your squad is as important as shooting straight - but also because it's one of the few WWII games which focuses heavily on characters and relationships rather than on guns and explosions. Hell's Highway continues the story through Operation Market Garden, and promises to be the thinking man's WWII game - with civilians to consider, clever AI to outsmart, and missions that require careful thought rather than just rushing towards an objective marker on the map.
Burnout 5

- Developer: Criterion;
- Publisher: EA Games
- Also Available On: Xbox 360
- Gamepage
Arguably the first really "next-gen" showing for the high octane, crash-tacular arcade racer. While I do have sympathy with those who argue that Burnout 2 was the pinnacle of the series (it was 3 for me, personally), this latest update is still promising enough to get us excited all over again. Smashing our way through free-roaming city environments? Yes, please.
Devil May Cry 4

- Developer: Capcom;
- Publisher: Capcom
- PlayStation 3 Exclusive
- Gamepage
One of the most polished games we saw at TGS last September, DMC4 looks like being a worthy addition to Capcom's exceptionally slick and stylish action franchise. The graphics are nice, the premise (which chucks you into the shoes of new boy Nero, fighting against former protagonist Dante) is enough to hook in fans of the series, and the promise of a game which has more content than the previous three games combined is certainly interesting. First looks suggest that the gameplay hasn't changed enormously - but DMC wasn't broken, so we're happy enough to see little fixing in this case.
Final Fantasy XIII / Versus XIII

- Developer: Square Enix;
- Publisher: Square Enix
- PlayStation 3 Exclusives
- Gamepage
They may be two of the most important titles on the PS3 release schedule, but we don't exactly rate the chances of seeing them in Europe in 2007 - even if they appear in Japan this year, the notoriously slow conversion and translation process at Square Enix could take months. It's a shame, because not one but two enormous, interconnected and visually stunning FF titles would be a real triumph in the PS3's first year on the shelves - and the decision to hand production of one of them over to the creative team behind Kingdom Hearts II makes us very, very interested indeed.
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2

- Developer: Ubisoft;
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- Also Available On: PC, Xbox 360
- Gamepage
The first GRAW was a stand-out hit for the Xbox 360, and we know plenty of people who are still playing it months later - so the team knew that for the second game (or the fifth in the Ghost Recon series, but who's keeping count?), they couldn't afford to rest on their laurels. GRAW2 is promising dramatic real-time weather effects, even more stunning lighting, realistic smoke and gas effects and a host of other visual changes - but more importantly, it's also going to beef up the tactical side of the game, especially in terms of how you select your squad and the impact that has on the success of your mission.
Haze

- Developer: Free Radical Design;
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- Also Available On: PC, Xbox 360
- Gamepage
Most famous for being "the guys who did Goldeneye" when they were at Rare, Free Radical have proved their worth with the comical but beautifully balanced TimeSplitters games, and the more recent departure into seriousness, Second Sight. Haze is another "serious" first person shooter; set in the near future in South America, it sees you fighting as part of a band of mercenaries against an insane rebel leader who wears the skins of his captives as clothing. Nice. The graphically stunning Haze remains largely under wraps for now - but great things are expected.
Heavenly Sword

- Developer: Ninja Theory;
- Publisher: SCEE
- PlayStation 3 Exclusive
- Gamepage
The hack and slash genre is one the PS3 won't be short of a few games to fill, from decidedly mediocre launch title Genji through to the eagerly awaited Devil May Cry 4 - but Heavenly Sword looks like it will stand out from the crowd thanks to superb combat mechanics, lots of things to destroy and interact with in the environment, a feisty heroine and great presentation (including a contribution of vocal and motion capture talent from Andy "Gollum" Serkis). Plus, the team behind it made Kung Fu Chaos, arguably one of the most underrated Xbox games ever.
Lair

- Developer: Factor 5;
- Publisher: SCEA
- PlayStation 3 Exclusive
- Gamepage
Still very much in the realms of "could be amazing, could be awful," Factor 5's aerial combat dragon-'em-up is an intriguing prospect. The demo we've played was graphically stunning and had plenty of fantastic moments, with cinematic dragon combat and majestic swooping and strafing over an epic, Lord of the Rings style battle - but the game will need a lot more variety and a consistent level of visual quality if it's to win a place in our hearts on release. Stroking our chins in a manner we hope makes us look intelligent, we tag this one as "hmm, we shall see."
Medal of Honor Airborne

- Developer: EA Los Angeles;
- Publisher: EA Games
- Also Available On: Xbox 360, PC, Wii, PS2
- Gamepage
The next version of EA's massive Medal of Honor franchise, as the name suggests, focuses on the airborne units - placing you in the boots of a paratrooper who is dropped into various war zones across the European theatre of World War II. Updated graphics are a given; the chief innovation that's been revealed so far is that you can control your descent in the parachute, and where you eventually land will affect how your mission plays out significantly.
MotorStorm

- Developer: Evolution Studios;
- Publisher: SCEE
- PlayStation 3 Exclusive
- Gamepage
Released shortly after launch in Japan, and due in the US and Europe this year with added online modes, Evolution Studio's muddy, violent racer faces the difficult task of living up to hugely optimistic target render footage from E3 two years ago. However, it meets this trial in style; it may not look the same, but it certainly looks excellent, and plenty of painful looking crashes and impressively dynamic physics for the churned up tracks make this into arguably the most promising launch title. Tom's playing through the Japanese version at the moment, and has had some nice things to say - look out for an import review soon.
Resident Evil 5

- Developer: Capcom;
- Publisher: Capcom
- Also Available On: Xbox 360
- Gamepage
It's all gone quiet in the Resi 5 camp in recent months, leading to widespread speculation that either Sony or Microsoft has constructed a money hat sufficiently impressive for Capcom to commit to an exclusive release - either way, we wish they'd just hurry up and finish the game, whichever platform it's destined for. The follow-up to the genre-busting Resident Evil 4 has massive expectations to meet, both in terms of visuals and gameplay - but if the team manages to keep the quality level up, watching them cut loose on next-gen hardware should be a fantastic ride.
Resistance: Fall of Man

- Developer: Insomniac Games;
- Publisher: SCEA
- PlayStation 3 Exclusive
- Gamepage
Insomniac, the chaps behind Ratchet and Clank, don't make bad games - and Resistance is unquestionably a good game, and uncommonly well polished for a console launch title. However, the company seems a little out of their depth with a hardcore FPS title, and early promise of really innovative weapons and scenarios doesn't quite deliver - but really good online play does, which means that this is a good investment for new PS3 owners who fancy a bit of online action.
The Darkness

- Developer: Starbreeze Studios;
- Publisher: 2k Games
- Also Available On: Xbox 360
- Gamepage
The last game from Starbreeze, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, was one of our top games of all time on the Xbox - so it's no surprise that we're watching their next-gen debut, The Darkness, like a hawk. Based on a comic series of the same name and featuring a young man with frightening demonic powers, The Darkness looks like being another massive success for the talented Swedes - and ever since he saw it earlier this year, Kristan hasn't stopped banging on about how great it looks.
Unreal Tournament 2007

- Developer: Epic Games;
- Publisher: Midway
- Also Available On: PC
- Gamepage
Epic's latest instalment in the Unreal Tournament series will be a showcase for the Unreal technology on PS3 - and given the new benchmark which the Unreal-powered Gears of War set for the Xbox 360, it's likely that console war followers will be keeping a close eye on how UT2007 turns out. As, of course, will fans of the most extensive and finely tuned series of multiplayer FPS games ever - if UT2007 continues the progress the series made with UT2004, this should be a really exciting game for the online multiplayer fraternity.
Virtua Fighter 5

- Developer: Sega;
- Publisher; Sega
- Also Available On: Xbox 360
- Gamepage
It may not have the accessibility of something like Soul Calibur or Dead Or Alive, but the Virtua Fighter series is arguably the beat-'em-up of choice of hardcore fighting game fans. Stunningly well-balanced and intricate control mechanics make it into a game which is perfectly suited for tournaments and grudge matches, and VF5's superb graphics also make it into a showcase for Sony's hardware which is likely to find a devoted following among fans of pretty people hitting each other in the face in lush environments.

I still think Sony can recover from their first tragic steps on the next gen battlefield, and their marketing machine can't be undervalued (same can be said about the power of their brand) but the more I see of the PS3 the more it seems that they will have a bad 2K7... expecially in Europe.

I can't believe i've forgotten about half those titles... AND SINGSTAR.

I expect a wii & pc (5 pages for that one at least) blow out as well.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
I will probably get Singstar aswell, simply cause I can make my own tracklist, I think it'll sell a truckload for that reason alone.
Exclusives for me: MGS4, Singstar, WKS, DMC4, FFXIII, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Motorstorm, and Resistance.
/checks bank balance
PS. FF agito XIII is the mobile game, FFXIII is the PS3 main one.

That's better.

Still, it's good to see a PlayStation console in rude health. It can only spur Microsoft on, not hinder them. Comptition is a good thing. Would Xbox 360 have had the likes of Dead Rising, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey without it?

...but if it is a killer app, it's one that makes no use whatsoever of the PS3's blu-ray or cell hardware, and emphasises just how crazy Sony is for making a console that costs twice as much as its rivals.
It's like Lumines on the PSP: its very success proves how unnecessarily expensive the hardware itself is.

Still, Singstar could easily sell this package for me alone. I now officially own ALL the so far released Singstar's on the Playstation 2 (I caved in and bought Anthems this Christmas, after getting Legends as a present)! Every time I'm invited to a party, I am basically ordered to bring the games along with me. They're just so much fun together with beer and girls!

Oh well, I won't get one at launch anyway.

I agree with Disc about singstar being great for casual gamers but how many casual gamers will pay over £400 to sample it? Thats not a dig, I think the PS3 actually offers good value for money for what you get.

The 360 has much to look forward to in 2k7 and probably the Wii also but I just can't see ANY reason to buy a PS3.

They're saying most are multiplatform when clearly they are not (10/20). The 360 list was mostly multiplatform (9/22).

No you are correct. There has also been similar rumors about DMC 4 and FF XIII.
Wether there is any truth whatsoever in those rumors is a different thing altogether though.

That's what worries me though. The PS2 costs about £100 now and has cost about £200 for many years. The PS3 will cost something like £430 when it launches... how many people will be willing to pay that much just for singstar, especially as singstar won't be that different on the PS3 except for the online bits?
Comment below viewing threshold Show
@ThinkTank - I doubt any of those will go multiplatform, MGS4 may, but it won;t for a while, and since nothig is annoucned, and has in fact, been denied, it's exclusive. The "it won't stay exclusive argument" is useless until they aren't exclusive.

If MGS4 goes to 360 as well then 360 wins hands down for me...
But I don't get some of the flaming sometimes, take the AVP movie tagline:

But now:
Microsoft Vs Sony: "Whoever wins, the gamer wins"....surely?

It's pretty obvious there wasn't going to be much to get excited about on the PS3, given it's troubled birth, so even if a short(ish) list like this turns out quality, it will be a good show.

Comment below viewing threshold Show
How many of those people know it will cost £430 though?
I doubt the original singstar would have done as well if it had been launched on such an expensive console, because it was by definition not a hardcore game, but a mass market one. That works fine if the console is at a mass market price of £100 to £200, but does it work when the console costs two to four times as much as they paid for the PS2?

Kato, I wasn't defending Sony for no reason, there are more exclusives I this list, when people say there are not. If you can't defend that, or see why anyone would, you're an idiot. Not counting the PC as a gaming platform is very shortsighted aswell.
If people had just said the list doesn't interest them, then fine, I take no objection to that. But they didn't, they made comepletely false statements to support their opinions.

I first came to this site on a bit of a lark, way back when the Xbox came out, but before I think it was in Europe. Is that right? Maybe it launched there the same time - I don't remember.
Anyway, there was more anti Xbox rhetoric going on here then most of you would believe. Everything was bad. Even Live was reviled for demanding broadband. I'm serious, if you can go back and look. So, I mostly wanted to defend the Xbox a little because I liked it and I thought it was maybe just anti-MS/American sentiments driving most of it.
So, here it is, a few years later, and now Sony is the one being beat up on. I can't believe I did it - I changed all your minds in only a few years. I can rest now

MGS4 will not come to 360 and neither will Final Fantasy XIII - Sony won't let that happen. But also, last time Kojima ported his MGS franchise to an Xbox console, the sales were dismal and Kojima-san has said that he prefers the PlayStation 3 on numourous occasions. Add to this the fact that if anyone will use the SIXAXIS the best way posible it will be Kojima and 360 doesn't have motion control. Also, Final Fantasy's fanbase is firmly on the PlayStation - Square Enix don't want to spend millions of dollars on a 360 conversion only to barely break even.
And whats with the dancing 'Waltz for the Moon' scence from Final Fantasy VIII?

Many (not all) of us are finding that the games we want to play, along with the controller (apart from in first person shooters), and the online service are all intact and at a reasonable price on the X360
We don't love the brand - you could put a poll right here to see how loyal we are to M$.
The issue is, that Sony has pissed most of us off. I've stubbornly kept my 2001 PS2, and spent a few hours taking it apart to clean and align the laser - NOT FOR SONY, but to play God Of War, Res Evil 4 and Outrun2006.
I refused to pay Sony £50 for a repair, when I already paid them something like £200 for the console in 2001 - and that was for GTA 3, not for Sony. Why am I going to plan to pay over £400 when I've not seen a release date for anything I'd want to buy for PS3?
I waited for the PS2 online play, as it was beyond 2001 at the time and I'd been playing online on the PC with multiplayer Doom, Quake, GTA, Halflife and Unreal Tourney - where was the online play...? er... well... I spent ridiculous hours just getting my PS2 to go online 2 years ago to play Burnout 3. That was in 2004. Sony haven't done anything since that makes me believe I shouldn't go with Xbox live on 360. PSP online... *tumbleweed*
No chance I'm being burned again. All of these brand new Blu-Ray drives - lovely 54Gb storage or whatever, but that's a smokescreen - what's the data transfer rate? How much RAM does the system have?
Will the drive last more than 3 years? My PS2 started to die in late 2004. My brother has been more willing to spend on games over the last few years - he's in his early 20s. When I was younger, I'd probably do the same, but his disposable income bought him 4 PS2s.
There's no chance you'd get me doing that garbage. I reckon Sony only really sold 50million consoles to individuals, as the rest are replacements for failures or chipped secondaries.
I'll get a PS3 in 2008-9, thanks, unless the GAMES change the situation. Also, I wait until enough decent games are released and available before putting down the cash. That's why I don't have a Wii - yet...

Not much has grabbed me on the ps3's list, resistance looks superb, and from what I saw of motorstorm at the games museum in London it looks amazing too. Apart from that all the other decent games seem to be mulitplatform.
To all you Japanophiles out there it must look an amazing list though.

And also a lot of other exclusives and promising titles are missing from the list like other's pointed out.
It'll be a grand year for gamers...all gamers! I dont think there is a real platform which sucks...
Which kinda was the case with GameCube and the orginal XBOX back then, with all respect...
PS: with the EyeToy HD, SingStar stuff and Guitar Hero III and alike stuff, I can't actually see PS3 loose this 'war', especially when Sony can afford to drop the price also by that time
The only danger I see from Xbox is ironically their expanding Japanese games...
PS2: excuse my non-native English
PS3: I can't wait...

Ahhh... it will be difficult not to treat myself to a PS3 with God Of War 3 (providing there is online play with chat or some other way of expressing your personality)... if it appears any time this decade.
2009 or sooner, with a bit of luck! 360 wih a side order of Wii will see me through till then. If I get bored (not possible, really) then there's still the PS2, PSP, Dreamcast, Saturn, SNES and Megadrive games to provide entertainment.
It's funny how only the PS2 hardware is failing. I have a PC DVD drive that I bought in 2000 that still works just fine - loads CDs and DVDs without any issues.
Win me over, Sony. Your move...

More like "Microsoft vs Sony: Whoever wins, PC games lose" more like.

List not complete. But great for console that just launched.

Or so they keep telling me for the past 20 years.
The PS3 will grow and grow and grow in Japan, Japanese developers know and count on this.
Problem is, Japan is not the biggest market that the ps1/2 sold in and the only way that those dev's are going to have any big budget projects is when they go global on as many systems as possible.
I don't know why people think that Japan is the most important market, even Asia as a whole comes last iirc.

I think Sony did that all by themselves, perhaps with the assistance of some crabs.
If Sony had just been boring and predictable and brought out a PS3 with no exotic technology that was pretty much the same as the 360, they would be now coasting into first place. Unfortunately they decided to do something different...

IF the PS3 had launched when it was supposed to,and had not suffered delay after delay,it's launch line up would have been absolutely fooking awful,it only now has a potentially good looking line up as various developers have had months of luxury time to get to grips with it and get the titles looking sweet,it also looks to benefit from a lot of ported over 360 multi format titles to bulk up that launch line up.
At the end of the day when the PS3 finally hits our shores (I'm still going for Sept) it'll be almost two years late to the next gen party,and being that late it really needs to bring some quality titles with it,moreso than what the 360 did waay back in Dec 05.

If fact I think we will won’t see it from these two again.
But for its 1st year Sony line-up is good and a lot of people will buy into it.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
A) Why not? It's out now. Compare it to what's out now. B) Even so, a lot of ps3 games of the first year are just incarnations of the same title that you could play over a year ago. C) I would say that the 360 would hold it's own with last years lineup against next year's lineup.
Japanese developers are better at making games that japanese gamebuyers want. American and European developers are more likely to make games that americans and europeans enjoy.
Having a game that is equally enjoyed over all regions is worth a lot, it's an extremely hard nut to crack.
So, how does this make Japan the most important developing nation? If I was a dev, I would much rather have a game that went down rather well with in the EU or US market than the Japanese. Let's be fair, most of those Japanese games never make it out of Japan.

Yeah, but when they do they cause a stir. Including ones for your favorite console.

I also wouldn't be surprised if FFXIII Versus ends up a multi-platform title too, though I very much doubt that the 'core' FFXIII will go the same way. After FFXII I don't think I care any more, though, as it pretty much finished what X-2 started and killed my interest in the franchise.
I'm interested to see how some of these games turn out. It'll take a fair few exclusives that I really want to convince me to pick up a PS3 (I work off a metric where I divide the retail price of the console by the retail price of the games, rounding down to the nearest integer, and wait until there's that many exclusives that I want to own before I pick up the console) but some of them certainly seem good. The interesting thing at this point is that aside from WKS and the FFXIII games, there seems to be pretty much nothing in the way of JRPGs. Have they all gone to DS or something?
Also, anyone know whether the PS3 allows for custom soundtracks the way the 360 does? Lair practically screams 'metal soundtrack' to me, but it doesn't have one...

There's supposed to be a big firmwire update in March and one of the features is multi-tasking so watch this space.

Why are they including Resistance???? Why not include Gears of War, Viva Pinata, Dead Rising, Saints Row etc, etc,
Microsoft rolls into 2007 with a 180 to 20 lead in titles. Now in 2007 it looks like they are still pulling away... Also, the 12 to 10 lead may quickly become 14 to 8 when MGS4 and DMC follow Tekken, Virtual Fighter 5, Assassin's Creed and others as formerly exclusive titles for the PS3 moving to the 360.
Add in Gears of War to counter Resistance on the list and it's 15 to 8... Yikes.

360: £260 / £40 = 6 games (4 released that I want)
Wii: £180 / £35 = 5 games (2 released that I want)
PS3: £425 / £40 = 10 games (1 released that I want)
I always end up waiting for price drops anyway though so I'm sure it usually works out that way!

I'm more than happy with my 360. I always end up arriving at the party late anyway so I think it will be 2008/9 until I purchase a PS3. Always better to wait, in the hope more good games to turn up. I always though ps2 peaked 3-4 years into life span GOW,MGS 3 ect, same with xbox. I only bought my 360 last week, so happy Thief 3, (brilliant, brilliant game) and Kotor 2 are backwards so to speak!. I have to get Ass' Creed,Alan Wake,Alone in the dark,Resi 5 ect, all on a machine I already own.
Still think the ps3 date will slip, and slip again

Can't wait for that!Must buy along with Singstar!
/pre orders PS3

Also this list seems virtually identical to the 360 one...

I'd say next gen console sales in general weren't that great over the festive season (for PS3 and Wii of course partly because of very limited availability). I guess the majority of the gaming public couldn't care less about next gen gaming. Except for the Wii, the new consoles target the same demographic without offering anything really new, besides high res graphics. Console gaming will evolve itself to death, with pushing technology rather than offering something people actually want.

So true! Same old games wrapped up with shinier graphics. How long can the industry last?

Now that MS have reached their target of an installed base of 10M units it is all adding up to a rather excellent 2007 for the 360, especially in Europe where we are all STILL waiting for Sony to get their arses into gear...

The GTA sales will be most interesting indeed, will it's sales growth be stunted because people will have to choose which console to get the game or will it still be a Iconic figure to one console even though it's multi-platform ala Tomb Raider.
In terms of exclusives there's plenty of Playstation ones i'll be keeping an eye out for this year that aren't mentioned on this list.
