Evolution wants MotorStorm to dominate News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

18 February, 2008

MotorStorm developer Evolution Studios has said that it wants to "dominate reaction racing for a long time".

Asked about the future of MotorStorm as part of a feature exploring the game's first year of downloadable add-ons, gameplay producer Jed Ashworth said the question "goes way beyond downloadable content".

"We have the aim of turning our launch-window title into a sustained, massive brand," he said. "We plan to dominate reaction racing for a long time. We'd never aim any lower."

Ashworth declined to comment on plans for MotorStorm 2, but confirmed that the first game's considerable support since launch wasn't getting in the way of development.

"The picture some people have of us all working on [MotorStorm DLC] is somewhat off the mark," he said. "We're a multiple-project developer now."

MotorStorm launched alongside the PlayStation 3 in Europe, and has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide, making it one of the Sony platform's most successful games.

Looking forward to a Motorstorm 2. They need to iron out some of the collision bugs though. It get's frustrating to be winning a race and then see your car explode after bouncing off a small rock.

I do dislike the notion that Evolution should be congratulated on continuing support of MotorStorm when the game was rather light on content to start with. Some of the add-ons have been quite poor value with little impact on the game itself. The first two track packs were fine in isolation but really should have been part of the game to start with. Only having eight tracks to start with is not really enough and any sequel must contain a more substantial amount to make any future DLC seem like an expansion rather than removed content that should be in the boxed retail game.

I completely agree with Windowlicker as MotorStorm is a good game but it was released as a barebones package compared with other racing games. I mean Evolution had to patch the game to include a Time Trial mode which really should have been included wth the boxed game. It's a game that was clearly rushed out to pad out the PS3's anaemic post-launch games lineup. That Japanese PS3 owners didn't even get an online mode until it was patched just shows how messy and rushed the game was really.

"Reaction racing"? It's a bit slow and plodding for that to apply. Burnout and Ridge Racer might qualify for that genre though, even ExciteTruck.

Step one. Invent new name for genre.
Step two. Claim you are on top.
Step three. Profit?

Motorstorm does play differently to other arcade racing games in the way that you never can fully predict how the vehicle will behave on the surface. So reaction racing might be a good name for it as you are constantly dealing with the car reactions against the surface.

If you don't think so I don't know if you've played the game.

still a ps3 high lights for me, seeing the carnage unfold in front of you is a real next gen buzz, though some may consider this rushed due to lack of features the main game and graphics certainly show little sign of that, other developers shold take note imo.
@ disc. snow would be great, i'd though of that myself, maybe motorstorm world tour taking in different terains, also like to see proper in car veiws like the original pre rendered footage shows, with wipers etc, and split screen racing.

If that is the case.. Sega Rally easily wins in that departement.

Dizzy: Now you are just being ridiculous. While it is true that the new Sega Rally is an evolution from the earlier arcade games the game is not as random as Motorstorm, it is still a slicks n slides experience that they've focused on. Speed is most important. Motorstorm is about finding the best paths around a complex race track.

It's not just about finding the best line in a straight curve. It's about avoiding that little rock there, that little bump there, that edge there.

Motorstorm deserves a lot of credit. It's just a shame it is somehow pissed upon.
