EverQuest film takes shape News

PC PlayStation 2 PSP PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

9 October, 2007

Sony has signed two top Hollywood names to help bring about its long-standing dreams of an EverQuest film.

The first is the writer of gory old action film 300, Michael Gordon. Former Marvel Studios bigwig Avi Avrad will be producing the project for Columbia Pictures.

That's all according to IGN, which heard from a reliable source that the film should see the light of day in late 2009 or early 2010.

Plot details are scarce, although apparently it will be based around an original story containing familiar faces from the EverQuest world.

EverQuest first appeared in 1999 and was considered to be the first 3D massively-multiplayer online role-playing game around.

Action takes place in the mythical world of Norrath, a realm inhabited by fantasy beasties like ogres, elves, humans and various hybrids.

It was followed in 2004 by sequel EverQuest II, which featured voice overs from famous people like Christopher Lee and Heather Graham.

If the everquest 2 launch is anything to go by they will probably release it head to head with the Warcraft movie and it will go largely unnoticed

Something like this could be SO good if they could do it right. The writer from 300 is definitely a good start.

I'm suspicious about just how many films are being announced as based upon games. In almost every case after a few months the project gets "put on hold" before quietly vanishing.

It's either extra marketing for the game or a way for writers and directors to get paid inbetween real projects - look how many times a film is announced as being in the works with director X or writer Y on board, only for them to drop out once something more substantial comes along.

I used to play Everquest a few years back - played for a couple of years actually - but I'm hard pressed to remember anything significant story-wise about it. Its going to have to stand on its own two feet, that's for sure, because nobody in the mainstream is going to have a single reason to watch it.

This is the worst idea for a movie ever.

Basically they'll make a generic fantasy movie and tack on the Everquest name in an attempt to lure in fans.

I say give it to Uwe Boll...it couldn't possibly get any worse!

So, will the Wizard kick all kinds of arse for about a minute, then spend the rest of the film sitting on a horse playing /gems?

"writer of gory old action film 300"

Frank Miller?

Seriously that film had, what, three lines of original dialogue? Still there's enough talk in everquest to fill a dozen blockbusters so he can rip that off.

I've never played Everquest II, but just how much dialogue did Christopher Lee record for it? I remember watching a pre-rendered video with him shouting a few things, but was there much else?
