EVE Tyrannis, EVE Gate released
Planetary and community interaction.
CCP has released the Tyrannis expansion for space MMO EVE Online and moved the web-based social portal EVE Gate into open beta.
Tyrannis opens the surfaces of 65,000 planets to scanning, development and, ultimately, harvest. You won't be able to actually build on planets until 8th June; only scans can be carried out and skills trained in preparation for now.
EVE Gate allows the community to contribute to the game-world through any web browser. To begin with, this will be limited to sending messages to other players and using a calendar.
Developer CCP has also created more options for accessing the game's API, added lots more in-game landmarks and brought back live events.
More information can be found on the EVE Online website.

Yeah I hate it when a company doesn't charge for expansions and then tier those expansions so they don't impact on the current database / lag issues they're still trying to figure out and fix. Absolutely shocking.

I appreciate their expansions are free, and the fact they've been excellent in the past makes it even worse when they release something half-baked like Tyrannis seems to be.

For someone who supposedly knows the game quite well that's a surprisingly idiotic statement.
Time to set up POS and install sov equipment is virtually 0, time to train for capitals to take out that infrastructure > 1 year. That year would not be much fun.
Hidden in the depths is the fact that you can manufacture the necessary equipment for taking sov using the planets, kind of a big deal as whereas before you had to run a freighter to wherever you wanted an upgraded sov system now potentially you can ninja into deep null and manufacture everything you need there.
